Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singles out one Man Utd player for praise after Reading win
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singles out one Man Utd player for praise after Reading win

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reserved special praise for Matteo Darmian following Manchester United's win over Reading.  The post-Jose Mourinho era continued with a fifth successive win on Saturday afternoon, when Juan Mata's spot-kick was followed by a composed Romelu Lukaku finish in the first half of their FA Cup third-round tie.  Solskjaer made nine changes to his side, with Darmian used as a makeshift centre-back against the Championship Royals.  However, United's interim boss was full of praise for the Italian.  "He is the biggest plus today," Solskjaer told MUTV. "Matteo looked like he had played there before. I don’t think he put a foot wrong."  The decision to ring the changes saw the home side toil against the well-drilled Royals and the Norwegian held his hands up afterwards.  "It was always going be difficult with my team selection," Solskjaer added.  "I made it hard for the players to be fair on them because it's a team that's never played together.  "Some players like Matteo played out of position but I thought he was excellent. Reading made it really difficult for us.  "We never had a kick the first five minutes, they just kept possession and we weren't cohesive enough in the pressing.  "That happens when you don't have a team that doesn't plays together as much. We didn't have too much time to work.  "The pleasing thing is we're through and it's another clean sheet. 2-0 flatters us because I think they played some great stuff, then again we could have had three or four towards the end.  "The second goal was excellent with Alexis (Sanchez) getting Romelu in. Individual quality managed to get us through."

Silva is a workhorse, Utd have No 9 headache and more from PL
Silva is a workhorse, Utd have No 9 headache and more from PL

The festive football period is now over and the dust is just about settling in the Premier League.Manchester City overcame Liverpool in a crunch title clash, while Manchester United won a fourth game in a row at Newcastle. Chelsea were held to a draw by Southampton at Stamford Bridge. Here, AMITAI WINEHOUSE assesses 10 things we learned from this batch of fixtures...    1. The focus will be on Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero after Manchester City’s win against Liverpool, but there was a subtle star.Bernardo Silva was integral in midfield for City. He completed 83.3 per cent of his passes and – more importantly – made 10 recoveries of the ball, playing an integral defensive role. He also completed two-thirds of his tackles. Going forward, he provided the assist for Aguero too.And he covered 13.7 kilometres during the game. He was City's workhorse. He has developed every part of his game at City. It was David Silva who came off for Ilkay Gundogan. At just 24-years-old, we could be looking at the Spaniard’s successor.  2. Manchester United now have a genuine battle on their hands when it comes to the No 9 slot. Both Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku have staked their claims, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a selection headache.Rashford has now provided five assists and scored five goals in his last nine matches after his strike against Newcastle on Wednesday evening. Lukaku, meanwhile, scored after just 38 seconds on the pitch and with his first touch.Solskjaer will not worry about this particular problem — it harks back to his own days in a United shirt, when options up front were plentiful.  3. If Chelsea’s good start to the season suggested they had quickly adapted to the demands of Sarri-ball, this recent run shows the Italian manager still has work to do.They have now failed to score in three of their last five Premier League games at Stamford Bridge after struggling to break down Southampton. That figure last took Chelsea 22 games to hit.Given attacking verve is Maurizio Sarri’s big selling point, it must be assumed he’s got the capacity to achieve more from a coaching perspective. That short pre-season is now having its impact.  4. There’s no team that can escape Harry Kane’s lethal ability in front of goal. Ahead of Tuesday, he had one mark against his Premier League record. That came in the form of Cardiff, who were the only team of 28 he’d faced in the top flight that he had not scored against. In this, his fourth match against them, he finally struck. If there are any doubts that this is an elite striker, this statistic shows otherwise. Given the churn of teams in the league since he made his debut for Spurs, it shows Kane is more than able.  5. Unai Emery’s job this season is to navigate the problems in the Arsenal squad left to him while proving there’s a future of value with him at the helm. One way to do that is to show his ability to change a game, which proves he can read a match situation and has tactical awareness. And he’s definitely got

Man Utd news: Solskjaer makes Paul Pogba admission before revealing good news for two aces

United welcome the Championship outfit to Old Trafford tomorrow afternoon in the third round of the FA Cup. The Red Devils go into the match on the back of four consecutive wins in the league, their best run of the season so far. Pogba has been instrumental in the team’s renaissance but may be missing from the starting XI for tomorrow’s cup clash. “[Marcos] Rojo, [Chris] Smalling - they're out," Solskjaer said during his pre-match press conference when asked to provide an update on his squad. **PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE**  "I'm not sure if Paul's going to be ready; he got a knock against Newcastle. “Hopefully, [Marouane] Fellaini will get through the training session today and we'll be more or less a full squad.” Solskjaer will ring in the changes for the match with The Royals and plans on handing starts to Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, who came off the bench on Wednesday to help United register a 2-0 win over Newcastle. "There'll be a few changes and they get a chance,” the Norwegian said. “Some of them are itching to play. [We will] get Lukaku a start, get Sanchez a start. “That's important for them because they need more game time." United are expected to see off the Championship strugglers with ease given their poor run of form. And Solskjaer admits the minimum requirement for his side is to reach the final of the tournament. "Whatever competition you're in, you want to win when you're at a club like this," he said. "I'm not sure if you expect to win it but it's more or less what you do expect from a club like this and the players we've got."

Solskjaer confirms two Manchester United starters vs Reading

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez will start for Manchester United against Reading in the FA Cup.  Lukaku missed Solskjaer's first two games in charge against Cardiff and Huddersfield on compassionate grounds but emerged off the bench to score in the wins over Bournemouth and Newcastle.  Sanchez, who suffered a hamstring injury in November, returned for his first appearance in over a month at Newcastle on Wednesday night and assisted Marcus Rashford's clincher at St James's Park.  Solskjaer has only made two changes to United's front three in his four matches so far but is expected to rotate heavily for the visit of Reading, who are second from bottom in the Championship.  "Definitely, there'll be a few changes and they'll get a chance," Solskjaer added. "Some of them are itching now to play of course, get Lukaku a start, get Sanchez a start, that's important for them because they need more game time." However, Solskjaer's last career game was in the 2007 final defeat to Chelsea at the new Wembley.  The two-time FA Cup winner used to watch finals on television in Norway and Solskjaer intends to try to equal Arsenal's 13 FA Cups.  "We're about wining trophies and the FA Cup final is such a fantastic one to play in," Solskjaer added. "I played in the 1999 one at Wembley and after having watched so many FA Cup finals as a kid, to be able to walk from the dressing room and up to the pitch was fantastic. I've seen so many times in Norway.  "And that's what we hope for, get to the final. Ander Herrera reveals secret to Paul Pogba's surge in form for Man Utd
Ander Herrera reveals secret to Paul Pogba's surge in form for Man Utd

Paul Pogba has been set "free" by Manchester United and is conjuring "magic" performances - according to team-mate Ander Herrera.  The French midfielder has scored four goals in three games since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge, and orchestrated a hard-fought win over Newcastle on Wednesday night.  Pogba is driving United ever closer to the top four, after Champions' League qualification seemed impossible after poor results under axed Jose Mourinho.  Herrera says Pogba, linked with a transfer to Juventus after disagreements with Mourinho, is key to United's revival.  Team mates have pledged to graft to ensure Pogba can express himself and open up teams with his skill and running power.  The World Cup winner limped out of St James' Park with scuff mark high on his thigh from a terrible challenge from Jonjo Shelvey, but was in good spirits posing for photographs.  Herrera said: "I think Nemanja Matic and me, and the other players, we have to help him to make him feel free and that's what we're doing.  "When he is in the opponent's half he has that magic to change the game, so we are really happy for him.  "He is very important for the club - on the pitch and off the pitch as well.  "He's playing really, really well. Not only with the ball. I think as soon as we lose the ball he is ready to defend, ready to help the team.  "He is playing very simple and effective in our half."  Herrera says United can't get bogged down fretting about catching the top four, with Chelsea six points clear at the moment.  He said: "When I saw we were maybe 12 points behind, I decided to not think about it, go game-by-game and that's what we did.  "That's what I did at least and things are going well, so I don't want to change. I am not going to think about that.  "If we continue this run, we will be closer to the top four but it's not something that kills my mind right now.  "I respect a lot what the last manager did for us.  "The only thing I can say, or the only thing I can talk about, is our form right now.  "It's very good, we are happy, we are playing good and I hope we can continue."  Big tests lie ahead for Solskjaer's side, greater than Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Newcastle.  After facing Reading in the FA Cup United jet to Dubai for a sunshine break, before tackling Spurs.  Herrera added: ""The next Premier League game is Tottenham and is going to be even tougher.  "Yeah, I hope we can win against Reading and we go (to Dubai) even more happy."

Solskjaer admits he doesn't want to leave Man United next summer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that he does not want to leave Manchester United next summer.Victory at Newcastle United meant Solskjaer continued his 100 per cent start as interim manager and he challenged his players to continue that form with tougher tests ahead. He also became the first United manager to win opening four games since Sir Matt Busby 73 years ago. Tottenham await after the FA Cup clash against Reading, with United now just six points adrift of the Champions League places.'I don't want to (leave) - of course I won't,' Solskjaer said. 'It's such a great bunch of players, fantastic atmosphere, but it's the next game, it's the next game.'I'm doing my job as long as I'm here. If you win four you can win another four with this club.'That's the challenge, that's the standard we know. That used to be the challenge from the gaffer (Sir Alex Ferguson).' Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring seconds after coming off the bench and revealed Solskjaer is already rubbing off on United's attackers during training at Carrington. SOLSKJAER'S FIRST FOUR GAMES Cardiff 1-5 Manchester United Manchester United 3-1 HuddersfieldManchester United 4-1 BournemouthNewcastle 0-2 Manchester United   Total points: 12Goals Scored: 14Goals Conceded: 3  Marcus Rashford - whose free-kick made Lukaku's goal - is a chief beneficiary, scoring the second, and Solskjaer heaped praise on the 21 year-old.'He was calm, composed and just passed it past the goalkeeper,' he added. 'But his free-kicks, that the first one against Cardiff, and then he does it again, he's got a great hit. He must have been watching Cristiano Ronaldo when he was practising.'That was a tough test today, he gets kicked, and he gets tackled, he goes for headers, he wins, he challenges, he runs.'Marcus is going to be a top, top number nine, definitely but then we've got Rom, so sometimes he'll play on the right, sometimes on the left, sometimes through the middle, he'll get enough games.' Rafa Benitez bemoaned Newcastle's luck and would not discuss Jonjo Shelvey's horror tackle on Paul Pogba. The Frenchman left St James' Park limping.'We were not lucky with many decisions,' Benitez said. 'I think we did enough to deserve more. It's the final decision, that's the key if we want to score more goals.'It's a pity that after the big effort you concede a goal like that and lose the game.'
