Burnley stunned Old Trafford and ended Ole Gunnar Solkjaer's 100 per cent winning run as they held out for a dramatic draw. Manchester United were aiming to make it a seventh heaven under Solskjaer after six straight Premier League wins since the Norwegian caretaker boss took charge in December. But Sean Dyche's lowly stars rocked United and dented their Champions League hopes with second half goals from strikers Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood to take a 2-0 lead. But United roared back in the closing stages with Paul Pogba scoring a late penalty after Jesse Lingard was fouled in the box to make it 2-1. Then as the game ticked into five minutes of injury time Swedish defender Victor Lindelof denied brave Burnley a famous victory with a close range 92nd equaliser. Here are five talking points... 1. Dyche turns it around Sean Dyche must have wondered whether he'd overstayed his welcome at Burnley after a shocking first half to the season after finishing seventh last time. But the Turf Moor boss has turned results around since the New Year and his stars silenced Old Trafford with a shock draw. And what better way to bounce back from a 5-0 hammering in the FA Cup at Manchester City than to end Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's run of eight straight wins. 2. Heaton continues revival Tom Heaton was once a kid at Manchester United but his colours were firmly nailed to Burnley's mast with a stunning display. The 32-year-old star has had to contend with injury and the arrival of former England goalkeeper Joe Hart – and he's beaten them both. Heaton has been restored as Burnley's number one and he showed why at Old Trafford with a string of fine saves - particularly from Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku - to frustrate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's stars. 3. Lindelof is Mr. Reliable Victor Lindelof has fought hard to establish himself at Manchester United after a tough first season following his £30 million move from Benfica. More than a few doubted whether the Swedish World Cup defender would cut the mustard at Old Trafford. But the 24-year -old centre back has become United's most reliable defender. Calm, composed and decisive the Swede showed another side to his game to rescue United with a fine late finish to cement his place in fans hearts and earn his side a vital point after they look doo 4. Solskjaer gives youth a chance Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is right behind giving United's younger stars a look in. But his move to play 23-year-old Brazilian Andreas Pereira and leave Ander Herrera and Fred on the bench backfired. Belgian – born Pereira has always struggled for a place in United's midfield - and he didn't do his prospects any favours with the mistake that led to Ashley Barnes opening goal for Burnley. 5. Is Mata's race run? Juan Mata is an undeniable crowd favourite at Old Trafford but has his race been run at United? The popular Spaniard is out of contract in four months time and negotiations on a new deal for the 30-year-old star have so far
Paul Pogba hailed Manchester United's spirit as they produced an echo of glories past to rescue a point with a last gasp fightback. But the Old Trafford midfielder pulled no punches as he insisted it still wasn't good enough from his side, who trailed 2-0 to a Burnley side who hadn't won at Old Trafford since 1962. Goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood – who struck 10 minutes from time – seemed to have given the little Lancashire club an historic victory on the ground of their aristocratic rivals. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side showed they know how to fight in adversity, just as they did under his manager of old Sir Alex Ferguson. Incredibly, United had never been behind since the Norwegian arrived just before Christmas, and they seemed to suffer few setbacks in their eight straight victories. But they had to dig deep, with Pogba pulling one back from spot three minutes from the end before United produced an incredible stoppage time barrage which eventually saw Victor Lindelof level after he rammed home from close range. And afterwards, midfield leader Pogba insisted the spirit was right...but not the attitude from the start. "We have to learn from our mistakes and next time start the game differently,” he said. "The manager said to us, you have to start strong and be aggressive because that’s what they were in the first half. We played like we were winning 1-0 or 2-0, that’s where we went wrong. "The comeback was positive but the result was disappointing. "The reaction was good, we didn’t lose, but we dropped two points we could have won." Burnley will complain about the penalty decision, with Jesse Lingard winning a soft one as he went down theatrically after Jeff Hendrick merely placed an arm across him. But the draw still keeps Sean Dyche's side unbeaten in the Premier League since the turn of the year, and takes them further away from the relegation zone.
Memphis Depay has reached out to Marcus Rashford following Manchester United's 3-1 win over Arsenal. The Dutchman left the Red Devils in January 2017, after failing to reproduce the form he showed at PSV. Since moving to Lyon, however, the 24-year-old has been in sensational form. This season alone Depay has produced 12 assists and scored six goals in 22 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants. Depay joined the Red Devils in 2015, the same season Rashford had his breakthrough year at the club. Clearly still close to his former team-mate, Depay reached out to Rashford following United's win over the Gunners. The Netherlands star was reacting to a video from the warm up that showed Rashford nutmegging summer signing Fred. The England striker shared the clip which received thousands of views from across social media. Depay commented on Rashford's post: "@PhilJones_4 this brings me a memory in my head." The 24-year-old called out Phil Jones in the comments, clearly hinting that he had pulled off a similar stunt to the English defender. Rashford responded to Depay's comment with a crying laughter emoji. Depay's form in France has had some United fans calling the club to re-sign the winger. United did insert a buy back clause when he was sold and will have first refusal on the forward should he and Lyon part ways.
Romelu Lukaku has revealed his part in Alexis Sanchez's goal against Arsenal . The Manchester United forward opened the scoring in his side's 3-1 FA Cup victory over his former club. And Lukaku believes his words of wisdom helped the Chilean notch. "I told him yesterday in training listen ‘you will score tomorrow I will give you the ball just run and I will find you,'" he told MUTV. "I think he could see I was looking at him and he made the right run and it was a brilliant finish from him." United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, meanwhile, insists Sanchez can only improve. "It wasn't like Alexis had an open goal, it was a great finish," he said of the 31st-minute opener. "Every player, the more confident you get the more you want to get on the pitch and train and work on yourself and you trust yourself. "He has been injured lately so it was great to see him get 65-70 minutes tonight and he can only improve and I think he knows that himself." A league win away to Tottenham earlier in the month had been Solskjaer's best result since replacing Jose Mourinho, but he felt the performance against Arsenal took things up another notch. "It was a massive step forward for us performance-wise," he added. "As a team, the structure in the team was miles, miles better compared to Tottenham a couple of weeks ago where we hung in there and David (De Gea) saved us."
Marcus Rashford may not have been given much time to make an impact in Manchester United’s win against Arsenal in the FA Cup but that didn’t stop him from stealing the spotlight after the victory at the Emirates Stadium. United’s in-form striker came on as a substitute with 18 minutes remaining to help wrap up a 3-1 victory to fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side into the fifth round of the FA Cup. But it was in the warm-up where Rashford did his damage. In a one-touch rondo with his United teammates, the ball fell to Rashford with Fred in the middle. The Brazilian shifted his body across to block the pass but Rashford, who had stalled on the ball for a split second, pulled off a brilliant elastic to nutmeg the United midfielder. Naturally, United’s players went wild at Rashford’s sublime piece of skill and the clip went viral on social media. Memphis Depay was one of the players to applaud Rashford for his efforts. And the United midfielder went a step further by reminding Phil Jones of a similar incident during their time together at Old Trafford. Depay failed to find his best form at United but the Netherlands international is currently thriving at Lyon. And Depay’s performances in Ligue 1 have even led to United fans calling on their club to re-sign the forward. United do have the option to trigger their buy-back clause in the deal they agreed with Lyon, but only if the Ligue 1 club are willing to sell Depay, so for now it appears the Dutchman is staying put.
Manchester United will represent a far greater test of Arsenal’s new-look defensive partnership than Chelsea did last weekend, according to Alan Smith. Unai Emery’s side host United at the Emirates in the standout tie of the FA Cup fourth round, a week on from the morale boosting win over their west London rivals. First half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Laurent Koscielny helped secure a 2-0 win, while the club captain produced a man of the match display alongside summer signing Sokratis Papastathopoulos. It was the first time Koscielny had started alongside the Greek international and the pair combined to record a rare clean sheet, easily nulifiying a toothless Chelsea attack. United, however, have been reborn under the interim management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has masterminded a run of seven consecutive wins in all competitions and Smith feels their forward line, spearheaded by Marucs Rashford could cause significant trouble for Arsenal. ‘One of the most encouraging aspects of Arsenal’s win over Chelsea last weekend was the form of Sokratis and, particularly, Laurent Koscielny, the two centre-halves perhaps entrusted with keeping Marcus Rashford and Co quiet on Friday,’ the former Arsenal told the Evening Standard. ‘Together, they played with intelligence and great determination. You could see it in their eyes. Nobody was getting past that day. You could argue, however, that they didn’t really face the strongest of threats, given the unsuccessful tactic of playing Eden Hazard as a so-called false nine. ‘This will surely be much different, a proper test of the partnership: the direct pace of Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, the clever passing and forward surges of a rejuvenated Paul Pogba. ‘If Sokratis and Koscielny can handle all this, at least Unai Emery is granted some vital legroom in a department obviously in need of more quality and numbers.’
Belgian front-man Lukaku has scored three goals in his last four matches after missing Solskjaer’s first two games in charge while on compassionate leave. Yet the 25-year-old - United’s club-record signing at £75million two years ago - has yet to start a league game under the Norwegian. That’s with Rashford establishing himself as first choice under Solskjaer, while Anthony Martial has also started all the matches he has been available for bar Huddersfield, a game he missed with illness. Rashford and Martial were devastating in the first half of last weekend’s win over Tottenham with the former providing the game’s only goal for a massive 1-0 victory at Wembley. That has cast uncertainty over Lukaku’s role despite his impact from the bench to score against both Bournemouth and Newcastle. Solskjaer insists he will offer minutes to Lukaku, who has 109 goals in the Premier League, but dropped a hint that Rashford, Martial and Jesse Lingard will remain his first-choice forward line until May. “He's a big part of the squad, definitely," Solskjaer said ahead of the visit of Brighton to Old Trafford today (3pm). "There's no-one scoring as many goals as him in training. “There are the three who play the most [Rashford, Martial and Lingard] but then you've got Rom, you've got Juan [Mata], you've got Alexis [Sanchez]. “So I've got a front six I can rotate and Rom is definitely going to be playing games. “I used to be one of four strikers when we played with two. "Now we have six forwards and we play with three most of the time. “We'll be able to rotate and there's enough games and playing time. "It's about taking the chances when you get them, and to be fair, Rom has scored three already. “It's up to the strikers to take them.” Solskjaer has also revealed that Mason Greenwood is close to making his United debut. The 17-year-old has an outstanding 24 goals in 20 games across under-18, under-19 and under-23 levels for United this season and made the bench in the Champions League under Jose Mourinho. Solskjaer - who has spoken about his desire to give chances to the club’s academy prospects admitted: ”There are quite a few young kids coming through. “Jimmy Garner was there [in Dubai], Mason, Chongy [Tahith Chong] and [Angel] Gomes. So there are players there coming through. Mason is one of them. "You've got to remember that he's only 17. He's knocking on the door to get his first appearance."
That is the verdict of former Tottenham forward Garth Crooks, who has hailed Rashford following his moment of magic against Brighton on Saturday. Rashford has been one of the leading lights for Manchester United in the post-Mourinho era as Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer has utilised him through the middle. And Brighton were his latest victims as Solskjaer kept up his 100 per cent start since returning to Manchester, guiding United to their seventh win on the spin. Rashford received the ball from marauding full-back Diogo Dalot on the left-hand side of the box before a fine piece of skill took him past an onrushing defender. The England international then maintained his composure to sensationally curl the ball into the top corner of the opposite side of the goal from an acute angle. Rashford’s strike was his fifth since Solskjaer took the reins at United in the wake of Mourinho’s sacking in December. And Crooks says the 21-year-old is now uninhibited, unlike when the Portuguese was the man in the dugout. "There was a moment in the Manchester United v Brighton game when I literally jumped out of my chair in the Final Score studio," Crooks told BBC Sport. "Marcus Rashford attempted the most wonderful piece of skill and just missed the Brighton upright. "Moments later, from a more acute angle, the United striker nailed the technique and scored a magnificent goal. "Two months ago the England striker wouldn't have dared to be so audacious in front of goal under the autocratic Jose Mourinho. "The result? Old Trafford once again has bums on seats and smiling faces." Rashford’s goal against Brighton came 15 minutes after Paul Pogba had put United ahead from the penalty spot. Crooks picked out Pogba too, saying he has no issue with the midfielder’s stuttering spot kick technique as long as he scores. "So the Manchester United renaissance continues under Paul Pogba," Crooks said. "At least that's what it looks like on the field of play as caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks on, perfectly at ease with matters as his five-star general takes care of business. "Pogba's first touch was so precise it caused Gaetan Bong to panic and bundle the Frenchman down in the penalty area. "As for the penalty - he can take them however he likes as long as he puts the ball in the back of the net."
