Manchester United have the opportunity to move into fourth place today with victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage this lunchtime. We start the weekend two points behind Chelsea who hold the final Champions League spot. The Blues don’t play until Sunday when they travel to Manchester City. With the side he has named today, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer certainly has Paris Saint-Germain visiting Old Trafford on Tuesday on his mind. The two teams for today’s game are confirmed as: Manchester United David de Gea; Diogo Dalot, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw; Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba; Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial Substitutes: Sergio Romero, Eric Bailly, Ashley Young, Scott McTominay, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford As expected, Ole Gunnar Solskjer has rested a number of players that are expected to start versus Paris Saint-Germain midweek, including the front three. Romelu Lukaku makes his second Premier League start under Ole. However, the central midfield trio we expect to face the French champions all start today. Chrls Smalling partners Phil Jones at centre-back in making his first appearance under the caretaker manager. It was confirmed yesterday that Victor Lindelof did not travel for today’s game. Diogo Dalot is in for Ashley Young at right-back as we expected whilst the energetic Luke Shaw remains in the starting lineup. Fulham Sergio Rico; Denis Odoi, Maxime Le Marchand, Tim Ream, Joe Bryan; Andre Schurrle, Calum Chambers, Jean Michael Seri, Ryan Babel; Luciano Vietto, Aleksandar Mitrovic Substitutes: Fabri, Cyrus Christie, Anguissa, Tom Cairney, Kebano, Ryan Sessegnon, Floyd Ayite Claudio Ranieri has sent out a very attack-minded starting XI this afternoon which gives me full confidence in our side exposing them at the back and winning comfortably.
Anthony Martial believes Paul Pogba is now flourishing at Manchester United because he has been given more ‘freedom’ by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Pogba has been in sublime form since Jose Mourinho’s departure with six goals and five assists in nine appearances. During Mourinho’s reign at Old Trafford, Pogba struggled to find his best form and was even dropped for several key games by the Portuguese. But Pogba is now a key part of Unite’s midfield trio and Martial has credited Solskjaer with the 25-year-old’s improvement. ‘We all know what quality Paul possesses – Paul is Paul,’ Martial told Sky s. ‘Now he has got this freedom to play with, I think we are beginning to see the real Paul Pogba play and let’s hope it continues. ‘He is a leader, he talks more in the dressing room than he does on the field to be fair. Technically and with the spoken word, he is a leader in both senses. I hope he can continue to lead us to great things. ‘I don’t think we are very far off the top four now so it is just a case of keeping going, winning as many games as we can so we can ensure a place in those Champions League spots at the end of the season. ‘He [Solskjaer] is a coach with great values. I think he knows how to get the best out of players and he makes things clear so when we go out onto the field, we all know our jobs and we all know what we’ve got to do. ‘He’s given me lots of advice. It’s always positive to get advice from a top player in his own right, but sometimes, when you’re out on the field, it comes down to what comes naturally to you and you do what you’ve always known how to do in terms of finishing. ‘We have a laugh among ourselves quite often because I think finishing is something that comes naturally to me. I’ve played since I was a young kid, I’ve always been a footballer and a striker from that early age. ‘The thing we laugh about is that I miss quite a few in training, whereas in a match, I may only get one chance and I manage to convert it.’
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer interrupted Victor Lindelof mid interview to congratulate him after Manchester United's 1-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday. The temporary Red Devils boss ran into the Swedish centre-back while he was talking to the press, and couldn't resist delivering a quick message. Solskjaer was in a rush to leave the King Power Stadium to get to Lyon to watch Manchester United's Champions League opposition Paris Saint-Germain in action. When passing by the defender conducting an interview for Norwegian television station TV2, he said: "Good fight today, Victor," before quickly adding: "But sorry, I just have to run!" Lindelof has come on leaps and bounds under Solskjaer since his takeover from Jose Mourinho on December 19. The Sweden international has made nine appearances under the Norwegian and helped ensure a clean sheet against the Foxes. But despite his good display, which caught his manager's eye, Lindelof was slightly critical of his side's overall performance from the match. "We followed the match plan all right. We wanted a little more of the ball and control the match a little better," the centre-back told TV2. "It was a tough match against a tough opponent. I think we could have handled the second half a little better when we had the ball. But we won, 1-0 and no goals conceded, so we are happy."
Anthony Martial has returned to the Manchester United squad after missing the midweek draw against Burnley through injury. United surrendered their 100% start to life under the interim management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Wednesday, although two late goals rescued an unlikely point which kept alive hopes of a top four finish. Martial, who earlier this week ended the uncertainty surrounding his future by signing a new long-term contract, missed the game after suffering an injury in training but was seen boarding the team plane ahead of the trip to the east midlands. Paul Pogba, who was also reported to be an injury doubt, boarded the plane too, but Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling were all absent. ‘I don’t think there’s anything with Paul. Anthony has done some rehab work, so he will try a session today,’ Solskjaer said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. ‘I would imagine he would be available to be involved. He seemed happy yesterday.’ United are currently five points adrift of a Champions League qualifying place after Chelsea crushed Huddersfield 5-0 on Saturday and Solskjaer admits Leicester will pose a significant threat on Sunday after watching Claude Puel’s side put a dent in Liverpool’s title hopes in midweek.
A Manchester United steward was seemingly left bemused following Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Burnley on Tuesday. The Red Devils staged a thrilling comeback to rescue a point. The hosts were 2-0 down before Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof spared Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first defeat as caretaker boss. But it wasn't this game the steward had his concerns with. At the same time, Manchester City had just lost to Newcastle . After taking the lead through Sergio Aguero, the hosts fought back to clinch all three points at St James' Park. Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie found the back of the net in the second half to send the home fans wild. According to our friends at the MEN , Newcastle's upset rippled through Old Trafford causing some United fans to cheer. This prompted one steward to turn to the crowd and ask: "Why are you cheering?" City's defeat of course provides Liverpool with the chance of extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table from four to seven points. One fan who agreed with the steward tweeted: "Too right. End of fucking days if Liverpool win that league. I even heard a few ex pros enjoying the result when they saw the result on the screens. Not sure they fully realise the impact." Another posted: "Do you know what you are doing Man City? The trophy itself will never forgive you if you let Henderson and Lovren hold it." Looks like the ancient proverb 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' rings true in these parts.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United’s eight-game winning streak made them complacent going into their disappointing draw with Burnley. The Red Devils surprisingly went 2-0 behind to the Clarets at Old Trafford, but fought back to claim a point with a late equaliser. It was the first time that Solskjaer failed to win a match since taking over as interim United manager in December and he thinks that their immense success in recent weeks let complacency set in. ‘We started the game almost feeling like the eight previous games meant we could start the game with a 1-0 lead, but it doesn’t happen like this,’ said Solskjaer. ‘The performance wasn’t too bad if you look at it in the end, we had loads of shots, efforts, possession, we were just too slow. ‘We have to earn the right to win the game by having a good start. They made it difficult for us, but then again we had a great comeback. ‘The danger of winning might be that you think what we’ve done before gives us the right to start off on 90 per cent. ‘But you have to start properly in each game, and today we didn’t start well enough to cause problems.’ Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood gave Burnley a two-goal lead before Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof restored parity for the home side. While failing to beat Burnley at home is a source of disappointment for the Norwegian, he is pleased that his side showed spirit to fight back for a point. ‘I think all in all you’d be disappointed if you say you lost two points at home, but the reaction was good and I don’t think we deserved to lose the game. ‘The decision-making could have been better at times, but that’s learning. If the game was two or three more minutes we could have got the last one as well.’ United’s next game is away to Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Manchester United's eight-game winning run came to an end on Tuesday night, as the Red Devils drew 2-2 with Burnley at Old Trafford. On the back of a fine 3-1 FA Cup win at Arsenal on Friday night, United got out of jail against Burnley. Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood gave the Clarets a two-goal lead, only for Paul Pogba's 87th minute penalty and Victor Lindelof's injury-time effort to earn a sub-par United a share of the spoils. United's display after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer elected to start both Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in attack. But the caretaker boss didn't pair the duo in attack and retained the 4-4-2 diamond formation which has recently brought sterling performances from the pair. Instead, Rashford operated on the left wing in the absence of inured Anthony Martial; Lukaku played as the No.9 with recalled Juan Mata operating from the right. "Rom's done really well against Burnley before," Solskjaer said, explaining his decision. "He's scored, he's a handful and with Anthony injured we thought that was the best option with Rashy out there. "Of course, he got a couple of chances but today was not his day." Jesse Lingard has been crucial to United's recent form, starring in a No.10 role at the tip of midfield. But Solskjaer believed that it wasn't the decision to revert to a 4-3-3 that saw United's winning run come to an end, but rather a failure to start the game at the right tempo. "Sometimes that's human, it just doesn't function," Solskjaer explained. "The passes didn't have enough tempo on it but I thought at times in the first-half Juan [Mata] found some great positions. "We didn't create as many clear cut chances but we had 75 per cent of possession and we just needed a little more tempo." Paul Pogba echoed his manager's sentiment, declaring: “We have to learn from our mistakes and next time start the game differently. “The comeback was positive but the result was disappointing. The reaction was good, we didn’t lose, but we dropped two points we could have won.”
Manchester United are set to host Burnley at Old Trafford this evening as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to make it nine wins from as many games as caretaker manager. The Norwegian guided us to a superb 3-1 win at Arsenal in the FA Cup on Friday night to set up a tie against Chelsea in the fifth round, whilst Burnley were hammered 5-0 at Manchester City on Saturday. Ole has been speaking at his pre-match press conference and has given a team news and injury update ahead of this evening’s match. The good news is that Chris Smalling has been involved in training for a week and is available again for selection. Solskjaer now has four centre-backs available, with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones all featuring in recent weeks. Ole told MUTV: Scott McTominay played for the under-23s against Paris Saint-Germain on Friday so could be available for the boss as well on Tuesday. However, fellow central midfielder Marouane Fellaini is still sidelined for a couple more weeks and Marcos Rojo still hasn’t returned from his injury either. We head into this evening’s match at Old Trafford three points behind Chelsea, outside of the top four with the Blues travelling to Bournemouth on Wednesday.
