Paul Pogba has been in stunning form for Manchester United of late, but Paris Saint-Germain are confident of putting the brakes on him when the sides meet in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Pogba has put in a number of eye-catching performances since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived as United manager in December, including scoring twice against Fulham on Saturday. The Frenchman has already scored 11 league goals this season, the best return of his career, while he has also netted twice in the Champions League. However, PSG’s Julian Draxler is confident that the French champions have the players to put the shackles on the World Cup winner at Old Trafford. ‘They have got some great players at Man United, especially in midfield, with Pogba and [Nemanja] Matic,’ said Draxler. ‘They will be key in the game. ‘But we’ve got a lot of quality, too. Our players are more than capable. We stopped Paul sometimes in games between Germany and France. ‘We’ll see what he does. He can do everything, but we’ve got players capable of stopping Paul.’ PSG have former Manchester United player Angel di Maria in their ranks, and Draxler says he has been quizzing the Argentine about life at Old Trafford. ‘I was asking him some things about Man United, but I won’t tell you what he said – it was nothing bad!’ Draxler continued. ‘We will need him without Cavani and Neymar. Hopefully, he gives a good performance. ‘I don’t really know what position I will be playing, but I’m comfortable in lots of positions. I’m not the same type of player as Neymar and, clearly, we’ll miss him. I’ll try to put in a great performance.’ Draxler joined PSG from Wolfsburg in January 2017 for a reported 42m euros (£35.5m) and has been a regular starter in midfield ever since. The 25-year-old has three goals in 19 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
Manchester United beat Fulham 3-0 on the weekend to extend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sensational start to ten wins in his first 11 games in all competitions. Paul Pogba (2) and Anthony Martial were on the scoresheet for the Red Devils as they climbed to fourth in the Premier League table. Solskjaer's next test comes in the Champions League as United prepare to take on French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16. On Monday the temporary Red Devils boss took his players training. Here's five things we noticed from the session at Carrington. 1. All eyes on Romelu Lukaku Lukaku hasn't benefited from the Solskjaer revolution quite like his Manchester United team-mates; something that was picked up on by Jamie Redknapp. "It will come with Lukaku but he's the one that hasn't really perhaps responded to Ole because he's not been given a chance," Redknapp told Sky Sports. "I think he was injured when he [Solskjaer] first came. Everyone else has gone flying. You can see that it may take time or it might not happen for him at all. "It might not because the pace that Man United play with at the moment would enable people like [Marcus] Rashford and [Jesse] Lingard. They look better in the team than he does." Will the Belgian finally get his bit of luck in the Champions League this week? 2. Keeping tabs on Alexis Sanchez Sanchez was out of the first team set-up for the entirety of December after suffering an injury in training, but is on his way back for United. Solskjaer started him against Arsenal in the FA Cup, only for the Chilean to open the scoring for the Red Devils. Since then he's featured against Burnley , Leicester City and Fulham on the weekend, but does have a lot of competition for a place in the starting XI. Solsjkaer appears to be keeping an eye on Sanchez's progress post-injury, and it will be interesting to see if he starts in the Champions League. 3. Man United's shining light One man who will definitely be starting for Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain is Paul Pogba. He may have been struggling with the sun on Monday, but the Frenchman has been a beacon of light for the Red Devils since Solskjaer's arrival. In his last nine fixtures for the Red Devils in all competitions - since Jose Mourinho's sacking - Pogba has netted an astonishing eight goals from midfield. He also has a bucket load of assists to boot and will be chomping at the bit to steal the limelight in the Champions League this week. 4. Someone's feeling confident Another talented young Frenchman brimming with confidence at Manchester United at the moment is Anthony Martial. Prior to Solskjaer's takeover, Martial appeared destined for the exit, but since the Norwegian stepped in and put an arm around him he's been a world-beater. He's also recently been tied down by the club for the best-part of his career and is ready to start winning things at United. On Sunday he scored a goal Cristiano Ronaldo would have been proud of an
Manchester United’s board have already decided to name Ole Gunnar Solskjaer their new permanent manager, according to reports. The Norwegian, who initially replaced Jose Mourinho on a caretaker basis, has enjoyed a phenomenal start to life at Old Trafford, winning 10 of his 11 matches as United have risen up to fourth place in the Premier League table. Solskjaer was not initially in the frame to take over on a full-time basis, with Mauricio Pochettino the standout candidate, but he has stunned United’s board with his leadership of the club. And now The Sun report that United’s decision-makers have determined that he is the perfect man for the job and will hand him a long-term contract. It had been suggested that Solskjaer would need to overcome PSG in the Champions League to prove his credentials, but United’s board have seen enough already – though the decision may still not be announced until the end of the season. United have explored other options, such as Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane, but Joel and Avram Glazer are convinced that Solskjaer is the right man to lead the club. Avram was at Saturday’s win over Fulham, when United emerged as 3-0 victors despite picking a heavily rotated team, and he spoke to Solskjaer in the dressing room afterwards. Solskjaer is effectively on loan at Old Trafford from Molde, but the Norwegian club would be delighted to see one of their own land the biggest job in football. The 45-year-old has blown United’s board away with his leadership of the club, combining excellent results with free-flowing, attacking football, while he is already thought to be discussing summer transfer targets with the club.
Anthony Martial scored a memorable goal for Manchester United against Fulham on Saturday, one that has seen the Frenchman compared to Cristiano Ronaldo. Martial went on a powerful, pacey run at Craven Cottage, beating two players before stroking the ball home, very much reminiscent of a goal Ronaldo scored for United at the same ground in 2007. The similar strikes for the same side, against the same opposition obviously led to comparisons being made, and United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Martial can reach the same level as the Portuguese superstar. ‘If he wants to be at Cristiano’s level, Anthony knows what he has to do,’ said Solskjaer. ‘It’s up to him. He has the talent.’ ‘He does have similarities, of course’ said Solskjaer when asked about the comparable goals from Martial and Ronaldo. ‘It was towards the end of the game and we played a very poor game and Cristiano scored it.’ The goal in west London was Martial’s ninth in the Premier League this season and he is on course to break his personal record of 11 strikes in a league season, which he managed in 2015/16. The 23-year-old extended his Manchester United contract at the end of January and Solskjaer has been delighted with his performances of late. ‘I am glad he is in my team,’ said the Norwegian. ‘He has contributed to so many chances, so many goals. He is a Manchester United player. He excites the crowd. He excites the manager. He excites his team-mates. And he is a great character around the place.’ United are now fourth in the Premier League after that victory at Fulham and thanks to Chelsea being hammered 6-0 by Manchester City on Sunday. The Red Devils return to Champions League action on Tuesday night when they host Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford.
Arsenal are reportedly one of the latest names to be linked with an interest in the transfer of Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt. A host of big names have long been mentioned as being among the Dutch youngster’s many admirers, but the Daily Mirror now lists Arsenal alongside their Premier League rivals Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as big names from around Europe like Barcelona and Juventus. However, the Mirror note that there could be one big stumbling block in bringing the £50million-rated centre-back to England, and that’s his agent Mino Raiola, whom PL clubs are said to be reluctant to do business with. It’s fair to say Raiola has a bit of a reputation on these shores, so this could unfortunately mean we don’t get to see one of the most talented young players in the world make his way to an English club. Arsenal could undoubtedly do with a signing like De Ligt, however, with the Gunners in urgent need of a statement purchase like that at the back. Matthijs de Ligt in action for Ajax Unai Emery has had to put up with Shkodran Mustafi and other below-par defenders this season, and a signing like De Ligt could be Virgil van Dijk-esque in its significance for Arsenal. Still, given the Raiola situation and the big-name competition, this perhaps seems a tad ambitious for the north Londoners.
Manchester United are weighing up a £50million summer bid for Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon, according to reports. England Under-21 international Sessegnon excelled as the London club won promotion to the Premier League last season. Fulham have struggled in the top flight though and the left-sided star has seen his playing time diminish since Claudio Ranieri was appointed manager. Sessegnon, 18, has made 23 Premier League appearances this term but last started a game on January 12, when he was substituted at half-time during Fulham's 2-1 defeat at Burnley . He has 18 months left to run on his current contract and according to the Express , Sessegnon is stalling on signing a new one at Craven Cottage. Sessegnon is said to be ready to leave Fulham should they lose their battle with relegation, with the club seven points from safety following Saturday's 3-0 home defeat to United. And United could use the stunted progress of the 18-year-old under Ranieri to help convince him to move north at the end of the season. Sessegnon made his debut for Fulham at just 16 and he has been tipped to force his way into the senior England squad before long.
Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial combined to crush Fulham and send Manchester United into the top four. Pogba caressed a superb first after 14 minutes while Martial went one better, dribbling from the half-way line before curling home the 23rd minute second. Pogba hit the third from the spot after Maxime Le Marchand brought down Juan Mata with 25 minutes left. It extended the post-Mourinho run under Ole Gunner Solskjaer to ten wins out of eleven. Even more significantly, it means United have now won six consecutive away games in all competitions for the first time since May 2009. For Claudio Ranieri’s Fulham side, however, the misery continued. Defeat here means the side seven points from safety have now lost six of their last seven. Here's five talking points: Ole or Poch? The conundrum continues Under Solskjaer, United are back in form, back in the top four and back oozing the kind of class not seen since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson. They are not perfect. Fulham could and should have netted twice in the opening minutes. But then when you replace three of the back four ahead of PSG next week you can expect some early teething troubles. The fact remains that Solskjaer’s United have taken 25 League points from a possible 27. The fact remains that the swagger is back - even in the B team. The fact remains that the majority of Manchester United’s fans are sold on Solskjaer. It is not just about the results. It is about the kind ethos back at Old Trafford that enabled them to dominate the top flight before Sir Alex retired. For so long the greater experience of a Mauricio Pochettino appeared to be a given for the next permanent United boss. Solskjaer is now seriously challenging that. Martial continues to shine It is remarkable to think Jose Mourinho would willingly have seen the back of the French wideman. Had the club backed the manager and not the player - who didn’t want to sign a new deal under Solskjaer’s predecessor - they could so easily have surrender an exceptional talent. Every person of a United persuasion will have looked at the quality of his goal, which saw him dribbling from the half way line past two players, and breathe a sigh of relief he is still theirs. Pogba dazzles again The midfielder written off as a virus by Jose Mourinho just can’t stop leaving opposition defenders - and, you’d imagine, Mourinho himself - feeling sick. Pogba’s sumptuous first-half strike means he has now scored eight goals and provided five assists since Solskjaer’s appointment. In total Pogba now has 12 goals this season. Ten of them in the league. This has now become his best goalscoring campaign in club football. And just for good measure - Paul Pogba is the second United midfielder to score 10 or more Premier League goals in a single campaign in the last 16 seasons (since 2002-03) - the other was Wayne Rooney, who netted 12 goals from 20 midfield starts in 2012-13. Enough said. PSG issued warning When the draw for the knocko
Manchester United have the opportunity to move into fourth place today with victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage this lunchtime. We start the weekend two points behind Chelsea who hold the final Champions League spot. The Blues don’t play until Sunday when they travel to Manchester City. With the side he has named today, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer certainly has Paris Saint-Germain visiting Old Trafford on Tuesday on his mind. The two teams for today’s game are confirmed as: Manchester United David de Gea; Diogo Dalot, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw; Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba; Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial Substitutes: Sergio Romero, Eric Bailly, Ashley Young, Scott McTominay, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford As expected, Ole Gunnar Solskjer has rested a number of players that are expected to start versus Paris Saint-Germain midweek, including the front three. Romelu Lukaku makes his second Premier League start under Ole. However, the central midfield trio we expect to face the French champions all start today. Chrls Smalling partners Phil Jones at centre-back in making his first appearance under the caretaker manager. It was confirmed yesterday that Victor Lindelof did not travel for today’s game. Diogo Dalot is in for Ashley Young at right-back as we expected whilst the energetic Luke Shaw remains in the starting lineup. Fulham Sergio Rico; Denis Odoi, Maxime Le Marchand, Tim Ream, Joe Bryan; Andre Schurrle, Calum Chambers, Jean Michael Seri, Ryan Babel; Luciano Vietto, Aleksandar Mitrovic Substitutes: Fabri, Cyrus Christie, Anguissa, Tom Cairney, Kebano, Ryan Sessegnon, Floyd Ayite Claudio Ranieri has sent out a very attack-minded starting XI this afternoon which gives me full confidence in our side exposing them at the back and winning comfortably.
