Juventus prepared to swap €80m superstar for Manchester United talisman Paul Pogba in summer transfe
Juventus prepared to swap €80m superstar for Manchester United talisman Paul Pogba in summer transfe

Juventus are willing to sell Douglas Costa to Manchester United, but only if Paul Pogba is included as part of any deal. According to Tuttosport, Juve rejected a €60 million offer from the Red Devils for the Brazilian superstar in January, but they may be willing to sanction his departure in the summer. Tuttosport states that the Italian giants are prepared to swap Costa for United’s talismanic midfielder Pogba, who enjoyed a brilliant spell in Turin between 2012 and 2016. Juve are keen on bringing the Frenchman back to the Allianz Stadium, but they believe that Costa is worth around €80m, equalling their valuation of the World Cup winner. Therefore a straight swap is the only deal the Serie A champions are willing to consider, given the important role Costa enjoys in Massimiliano Allegri’s side and the three years left on his current contract. The Brazil international has played in 24 matches across all competitions for the Old Lady this season, helping the team storm ahead in the Italian top flight once again while also launching an assault on the Champions League. Douglas Costa  United have already identified Costa as a priority summer target – as per Tuttosport – and although they might be willing to pay a huge fee for his services, it seems unlikely that they will want to lose Pogba. The 25-year-old has been sensational for the Red Devils at the start of 2019, emerging as not only their top goalscorer but also one of the most effective midfielders in European football. Pogba’s ability has never been in doubt, but he had struggled for consistency at Old Trafford until recently, with caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now seemingly getting the best out of the mercurial star. United are building towards the future and Costa could add a new dimension to their attack, but it appears that the club will have to go back to the drawing board in their negotiations with Juve in order to arrange an alternate deal.

Wenger explains how Mourinho mismanaged Paul Pogba at Man Utd
Wenger explains how Mourinho mismanaged Paul Pogba at Man Utd

Arsene Wenger reckons Jose Mourinho failed to get the best out of Paul Pogba because he is too much of a disciplinarian.  Pogba struggled for form under the Portuguese and even game time towards the end of Mourinho's rein at Old Trafford.  Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's takeover the World Cup winner has been a player reborn and has netted a staggering eight goals in just nine Premier League appearances under the Norwegian.  Arsene Wenger spoke out about the Frenchman, who was sent off in the defeat by Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, while providing analysis on Manchester United's European fixture for beIN SPORTS.  Wenger said: "Sometimes, you know, we are managers. Mourinho has proven he is a great manager. He has always gone for discipline for everybody.  "And in this team [under Solskjaer] I believe that Pogba is a fantastic football player but sometimes he lacks discipline.  "But you have [Nemanja] Matic and [Ander] Herrera now who work for him and so he can express his talent.  "Mourinho wanted discipline from everybody. That is defendable as well. So that's maybe why Pogba, as we have seen recently, has performed well."

Paul Ince slams two Man Utd stars in incredible rant after PSG defeat
Paul Ince slams two Man Utd stars in incredible rant after PSG defeat

Paul Ince branded Alexis Sanchez "a disgrace" and Paul Pogba "stupid" after Manchester United's defeat by Paris Saint-Germain.  Sanchez flopped as a first-half substitute while as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suffered his first loss since taking over at Old Trafford.  And Ince pinpointed United's highest-paid stars as the chief culprits.  He fumed: "The way Alexis Sanchez is playing at the moment is nothing short of a disgrace.  "His performances are a joke for the wage he gets. I wouldn’t begrudge his high wage, either, if I thought that he was truly putting his all in and playing well, but when you give someone that kind of money you expect a lot more.  "The fans deserve better, Ole deserves better, and so do the rest of his team.  "Maybe he has the hump because he’s not in the starting XI, but that’s hardly a surprise. He’s been hopeless, completely all over the place.  "There has to be a decision made about his future at Old Trafford, because it’s not working.  "But this is the dilemma when you keep sacking managers, players the previous boss brought in on high wages are impossible to get rid of - so you have to try and make them work in your team.  "He’s a million miles away from being at his best, he looks like a completely different player."  Pogba has been revitalised under Solskjaer, scoring eight goals since Boxing Day.  But he struggled against the French champions before his late dismissal for a second yellow card.  And Ince added: "Pogba really let himself down. Just when he’s won the fans over, and he’s doing everything you expect of a top player, he goes and behaves like that.  "I know it’s because he was frustrated at the game, but also it’s because Marquinhos was too good for him, he did a real job on him.  "The first yellow card he got was pure petulance – and the second challenge should’ve been a straight red anyway.  "I’d say other teams will be taking notes, knowing they too can mark Pogba out of the game.  "And just like that, he’s out of the second leg. It’s stupid behaviour. He’s been a talisman under Ole, and to lose him for that game is beyond disappointing."   Paul Ince is a Paddy Power ambassador. To read more, visit  news.paddypower.com

How PSG strangled Pogba and destroyed Man Utd's Champions League hopes
How PSG strangled Pogba and destroyed Man Utd's Champions League hopes

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.  Against his hometown club, in his best form since joining Manchester United and freed from the restraints of Jose Mourinho, Paul Pogba was coming into the game further emboldened by two goals and a man of the match display against Fulham at the weekend.  With United unbeaten in 11 games and Paris Saint-Germain left short in midfield since the club’s decision to dump Adrien Rabiot into footballing purgatory, meaning a midfield pairing of 60% fit Marco Verratti and an out-of-position centre-half in Marquinhos, this was Pogba’s chance to shine in the Champions League once again.  He was meant to dictate, to dominate, to lead Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and their newly-found effervescence past the team that are again dominating their ‘farmer’s league’ but have continually fallen short in Europe’s premier club competition.  Pogba came into the game looking like the midfielder most likely to bend the last 16 first leg to his will; with eight goals and five assists in nine Premier League matches under Solskjaer, thriving having been handed more creative licence by the Norwegian, it was all set up for him.  Instead, his night ended in ignominy, red carded for a second yellow after planting his studs above the shin of Dani Alves. In truth, it should have been a straight red.  Long before then however, Pogba had been registered ineffective by PSG. Early on there had been glimpses of quality, not least the lovely double touch that skinned Presnel Kimpembe down the right side.  But gradually PSG strangled the Frenchman, and wrestled control despite ostensibly being outnumbered in the central midfield area.  Marquinhos attached himself to Pogba and grew into the game, thriving in the role of shielding his defence and blocking Pogba’s attempted forward forays.  Alongside him was Verratti, diminutive in stature but boasting limitless bravery (or arrogance) with his willingness to take the ball in any area - no matter how much pressure - and either relieve pressure by buying cheap free kicks or to get his side moving forwards.  And once they had stifled Pogba in an attacking sense, they played on his weaknesses defensively.  Arsene Wenger, speaking on beIN Sports, laid it out perfectly: “What Paris Saint-Germain did, is they blocked Pogba with Marquinhos in man-to-man marking and when Paris Saint-Germain had the ball, Draxler came in behind Pogba.  “That’s where the chances were created behind the midfield of Manchester United.”  Pogba, as Wenger also said, is the “one player in the middle who can create the difference”. With so much onus on him to produce with the ball United needed Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera to step up.  But Matic simply didn’t have the mobility against the dashing whirl of Kylian Mbappe, Draxler and Angel Di Maria, while Herrera’s limitations were exposed by the creative nous of Verratti; Matic and Herrera struggled to get the ball into their attackers in anything like a threatening situation -

Arsene Wenger explains why Paul Pogba has improved so much since Jose Mourinho’s departure

Arsene Wenger believes Paul Pogba was stifled by Jose Mourinho’s tactics, with the Manchester United midfielder profiting from the greater freedom afforded to him by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.  No United player has scored or assisted more goals than the Frenchman since Solskjaer took over, though his recent upturn in form was spoiled slightly by a red card in Tuesday’s Champions League defeat to PSG.  Mourinho famously ostracised Pogba, feeling he lacked the tactical discipline he demands from every player, and Wenger says the midfielder is enjoying having those restraints lifted.  The former Arsenal manager told beIN SPORTS: ‘Sometimes, you know, we are managers. Mourinho has proven he is a great manager. He has always gone for discipline for everybody.  ‘And in this team [under Solskjaer] I believe that Pogba is a fantastic football player but sometimes he lacks discipline.  ‘But you have [Nemanja] Matic and [Ander] Herrera now who work for him and so he can express his talent.  ‘Mourinho wanted discipline from everybody. That is defendable as well. So that’s maybe why Pogba, as we have seen recently, has performed well.’  Pogba and Mourinho had several run-ins during their time together at Old Trafford, with the Frenchman losing his place in the squad before Solskjaer’s arrival.  He has netted eight times and registered five assists in the Premier League since then, though was given his marching orders late in the second half against PSG as the French champions dominated the first leg to bring a two-goal lead back to Paris.

Angel Di Maria leads funniest memes as internet trolls Man Utd over PSG defeat

Manchester United fans were seemingly brought back down to earth on Tuesday night following their Champions League defeat by Paris Saint-Germain - and rival supporters were loving it.  The Red Devils had been in good form under interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having won 10 of the Norwegian’s first 11 games in charge, but were well-beaten in the first leg of their round of 16 encounter at Old Trafford.  Expectations were understandably high going into the game, but United lost key wingers Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial to first-half injuries before PSG took control of the game following the restart.  Despite having their own injury crisis, with Neymar and Edinson Cavani both out injured, PSG netted quick-fire goals through Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe to take a controlling lead into the return leg in Paris on March 6.    And the fact former Old Trafford flop Angel Di Maria, who was in blistering form on Tuesday night, played a key part in both goals made matters even worse for the home support.  Football fans and the media alike were quick to react to United’s setback, with some hailing the performance of Mbappe who once again enhanced his glowing reputation with another impressive goalscoring performance.   Others hailed Di Maria, with one Twitter user posting: “Barging Di Maria, booing him, and throwing a bottle at him seems to have had the complete opposite effect than intended. Him holding the bottle now a fairly appropriate image for the game.”    That post was in response to an incident which saw a bottle of beer thrown at Di Maria, although he at least saw the funny side by pretending to take a swig.  Another user made light of the situation, writing: “PSG at Old Trafford right now. Beer in hand and cruising.”

Angel Di Maria yells ‘f**k off’ to Man Utd fans after Paris Saint-Germain take lead at Old Trafford

Paris Saint-Germain star Angel Di Maria yelled ‘f**k off’ at Manchester United’s home support after his side took the lead at Old Trafford.  The Argentine, who spent an ill-fated single campaign at the Theatre of Dreams, was subjected to abuse by the home fans during the opening 45 minutes.  Ashley Young barged Di Maria into the hoardings during the first half, much to the enjoyment of the Old Trafford crowd.  However, it was Di Maria that had the last laugh when he assisted PSG’s opening goal that was scored by Presnel Kimpembe shortly after half-time.  Di Maria was clearly fired up and utilised his limited grasp of English to taunt the Old Trafford crowd during the celebrations.  United fans launched a bottle at the 30-year-old shortly afterwards when he was taking a corner on the other side of the pitch.  Again, though, it was Di Maria that had the last laugh as he assisted PSG’s second goal of the night moments later when Kylian Mbappe slotted past David De Gea.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sets unwanted Manchester United record after Paris Saint-Germain defeat

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became the first Manchester United manager in history to lose a home tie by more than one goal after his side’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.  The Red Devils kept with the Ligue 1 giants during a tense first half but were outclassed after the interval and goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe gave the French club a healthy lead going into the second leg.  The Norwegian had made a near-faultless start to life at Old Trafford before tonight, winning 10 of his 11 games in charge.  However, the 45-year-old set an unwanted record by becoming the first manager to lose a tie at Old Trafford by two goals.  To make matters worse for Solskjaer, Paul Pogba was sent off in the dying minutes for a second bookable offence.  United lost both Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard to injury in the first half and struggled to lay a glove on PSG after the interval.  The second leg in Paris takes place on March 6th.
