Nigeria’s AFCON journey is unfortunately over after we lost 1-0 in our Round of 16 tie against Tunisia courtesy of a 47th minute goal by Youssef Msakni who’s shot got parried into the net by Maduka Okoye. Nigeria fielded the same starting XI we started the tournament with but it just wasn’t meant to be especially after substitute Alex Iwobi got sent off in the 66th minute We’ll see what happens with the coaching situation ahead of our Nigeria’s next game, which would be the crucial World Cup qualifier against our arch rivals Ghana I also briefly touched on the other Round of 16 ties, which have all been concluded with Burkina Faso, Tunisia, Gambia, Cameroon, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt & Equatorial Guinea all moving on to the Quarter-Finals Listen to the rest of the podcast for free on all major podcast platforms here: https://podfollow.com/nigeria-football-weekly/episode/a10386ef677da47324b36e9228e8b97fc8d7b754/view Subscribe to the Nigeria Football Weekly channel here: https://bit.ly/NigeriaFootballWeekly & make sure to enable all push notifications to never miss an update Follow Nigeria Football Weekly: Twitter - https://twitter.com/NFWPod Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nigeriafootballweekly/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/NigeriaFootballWeekly Email - nigeriafootballweekly@gmail.com
Nigeria fielded an unchanged line up as we impressively beat Sudan 3-1 to seal our progression to the Round of 16 as group winners on Saturday night Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring early in the 1st half after a fine cut back from Moses Simon before Taiwo Awoniyi scored his 1st goal for the Super Eagles to double our lead just before half time. Moses Simon then capped off his man of the match performance with the 3rd goal of the game just after halftime although Ola Aina conceded a sloppy penalty, which Sudan converted to make the scoreline a bit more respectable for themselves In the other group game, Egypt beat Guinea-Bissau 1-0 courtesy of a Mo Salah goal but Nigeria have sealed top spot due to our superior head to head record over the Egyptians I also previewed our final group game against Guinea-Bissau taking place on Wednesday at 8pm in Garoua, which is where the Super Eagles will also play our Round of 16 tie before rounding up with an update on the other groups at AFCON 2021 Listen to the rest of the podcast for free on all major podcast platforms here: https://podfollow.com/nigeria-football-weekly/episode/5597a7afb19d52bb8ea37ef31df87b5d867a56fa/view Subscribe to the Nigeria Football Weekly channel here: https://bit.ly/NigeriaFootballWeekly & make sure to enable all push notifications to never miss an update Follow Nigeria Football Weekly: Twitter - https://twitter.com/NFWPod Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nigeriafootballweekly/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/NigeriaFootballWeekly Email - nigeriafootballweekly@gmail.com
Nigeria drew 1-1 at home against Cape Verde on Tuesday to seal top spot in Group C and qualify for the final playoffs round of the CAF World Cup qualifiers as one of the seeded nations due to being one of the top 5 ranked teams from the 10 teams that have qualified for the playoffs. Victor Osimhen scored Nigeria’s goal in the 1st minute to take his WCQ qualification tally to 4 goals and he’s now scored 10 goals in just 19 caps so far in his career I also touch on the rumours regarding Gernot Rohr’s position as the Super Eagles manager before rounding off the podcast with the preview of the weekend games involving our Nigerian stars in Europe Listen to the rest of the podcast for free on all major podcast platforms here: https://podfollow.com/nigeria-football-weekly/episode/f9026a5ea546f6648b064320a78fa5c20a97a214/view Subscribe to the Nigeria Football Weekly channel here: https://bit.ly/NigeriaFootballWeekly & make sure to enable all push notifications to never miss an update Follow Nigeria Football Weekly: Twitter - https://twitter.com/NFWPod Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nigeriafootballweekly/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/NigeriaFootballWeekly Email - nigeriafootballweekly@gmail.com
Nigeria beat the Lone Stars of Liberia 2-0 on Saturday in Tangier Morocco courtesy of two penalties dispatched by Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa setting up a final game showdown against Cape Verde taking place in Lagos on Tuesday at 5pm with the Super Eagles needing a win or draw to book our place in the final playoff round of qualifiers, which will take place in March 2022. The depleted Super Eagles team left Cape Verde with maximum points after winning 2-1 in a hard-fought encounter against our closest challengers in Group C of our World Cup Qualifying group on Tuesday with Chidera Ejuke, Kingsley Michael & Jamilu Collins in particularly impressive form while Victor Osimhen scored his 1st goal of the qualifying campaign. The win means Nigeria has 6 points from 2 games and stands us in good stead heading into the Home & Away games against the Central Africa Republic in October & maximum points from those games should put us on the brink of topping the group and therefore qualifying for the Playoff legs where we would likely be a seeded team as long as we maintain our position as one of the top 5 ranked teams in Africa. In other news, the NFF wrongfully celebrated 100 caps for Ahmed Musa before FIFA clarified that he actually has 98 caps for the Super Eagles but he’ll probably reach the mark in the October Qualifiers even if it’s from the substitutes bench. I also previewed the upcoming league fixtures for our star Super Eagles players as club football returns this weekend with Victor Osimhen’s Napoli in action against Juventus & Leicester City’s Nigerian contingent facing the Premier League champions Man City on Saturday Listen to the rest of the podcast for free on all major podcast platforms here: https://podfollow.com/nigeria-football-weekly/episode/48928956b35e1492decdd5c7dcc82cb738aa44cd/view Subscribe to the Nigeria Football Weekly channel here: https://bit.ly/NigeriaFootballWeekly & make sure to enable all push notifications to never miss an update Follow Nigeria Football Weekly: Twitter - https://twitter.com/NFWPod Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nigeriafootballweekly/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/NigeriaFootballWeekly Email - nigeriafootballweekly@gmail.com
The Super Eagles kicked off their World Cup Qualification journey on Friday with a 2-0 win over Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos courtesy of a Kelechi Iheanacho brace & I go through all the key elements of the match. I then previewed our upcoming qualifier away to Cape Verde taking place this Tuesday September 7th where Nigeria will be playing without the core spine of our team including William Ekong, Leon Balogun, Wilfred Ndidi, Joe Aribo, Karo Etebo, Alex Iwobi & Kelechi Iheanacho who all play for teams based in the United Kingdom & have been barred for playing games in any ‘red list’ country, which Cape Verde is at the moment due to quarantine concerns on their return so we’ll be playing the game with a vastly different line up against a very formidable opponent *Podcast recorded before Ebuehi & Kalu positive COVID-19 diagnosis Listen to the rest of the podcast for free on all major podcast platforms here: https://podfollow.com/nigeria-football-weekly/episode/eafc36f031b0b97bad7293525630b6ebd04d5aeb/view Subscribe to the Nigeria Football Weekly channel here: https://bit.ly/NigeriaFootballWeekly & make sure to enable all push notifications to never miss an update Follow Nigeria Football Weekly: Twitter - https://twitter.com/NFWPod Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nigeriafootballweekly/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/NigeriaFootballWeekly Email - nigeriafootballweekly@gmail.com
