The San Francisco Giants blasted three home runs tonight as they beat the Los Angeles Dodgers for the fourth time in five games this season. Eric Haase blasted two home runs, and Harrison Bader also pitched in a homer of his own. Tony Vitello's bullpen management was excellent tonight, and starting pitcher Adrian Houser rose to the occasion and picked up the first win of his career against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite the San Francisco Giants' struggles this season, they seem to have no problem beating the Los Angeles Dodgers. Everydayer Club If you never miss an episode, it’s time to make it official. The San Francisco Giants utilized 12 hits to take down the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3 tonight at Chavez Ravine. Willy Adames and Rafael Devers reached base a combined total of six times tonight and drove in a combined five runs. Is this the beginning of the end of the slump for both players? Plus, Trevor McDonald delivered another solid start for the San Francisco Giants tonight in Logan Webb's stead. Has he shown enough to stick with the big-league club? The San Francisco Giants seemingly will stop at nothing to lure Aaron Judge home. Judge, a native of nearby Linden, CA, would be the Giants' most significant free-agent addition since Barry Bonds. The Giants met with Judge on Monday night and again pretty much all day on Tuesday, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic. Part of the SF Giants' pitch reportedly involved connecting Aaron Judge with Steph Curry, whose Warriors play down the street from the Giants' Oracle Park. Joc Pederson, Brandon Crawford, and Logan Webb also took to instagram in an attempt to recruit the Judge, whose 62 home runs in 2022 set the American League record. Judge was a near unanimous pick for AL MVP. Aaron Judge has also made it clear that his top priority is winning, and many have said that this makes the Giants less likely. But Dan Szymborski's 2023 ZiPS projections, which account for current rosters (so no free agents are assigned to any team) has the Giants projected at 83 wins vs. the Yankees' 85. Take Judge off the Yankees and suddenly they don't look like such a great team right now. They have a ton of money locked up to aging or underperforming players, so it could actually be argued that the San Francisco Giants are in a better spot in terms of projecting into future seasons. Relatedly, Baseball Prospectus' top Giants prospects list came out a few days ago, and once again they're high on the SF Giants' farm system. They're led by Marco Luciano and Kyle Harrison, as expected, although Luciano is more volatile now that he has been in the past. Harrison, whom Szymborski mentions as part of the reason ZiPS is relatively high on the Giants despite the absence of Carlos Rodón, is considered one of the best pitching prospects in baseball and BP suggests his ceiling is that he could be one of the best pitchers in the game. It's hard to win a series when you allow 28 runs on 45 hits. That's over nine runs per game—yikes! The San Francisco Giants are dealing with a huge amount of injuries and a Covid outbreak, but that really wasn't why they got blown out by the Nationals over the weekend. Chalk the series loss up to uncharacteristically poor pitching. Alex Wood and Alex Cobb failed to set the tone in each of their starts, putting the Giants in big early holes. Cobb was returning off the injured list after missing a couple of starts with a groin injury. But yes, the Giants look largely unfamiliar due to all of their injuries and the Covid outbreak. Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Belt, Dom Leone, and Zack Littell have tested positive for Covid-19. LaMonte Wade Jr., Evan Longoria, Tommy La Stella, and Anthony DeSclafani remain on the injured list. They're missing about 10 guys from their active roster who would ordinarily be in there. As a result, we're seeing a lot of the likes of Luis González (who's done a really nice job), Jason Krizan, Mike Ford (just acquired in a trade in response to all of the players on the IL), and Jason Vosler. Joc Pederson and Austin Slater are also banged up, but thankfully not on the IL. Despite it all, the Giants' hitting was not the problem this weekend, and hasn't been a problem all season. They're scoring the most runs per game in all of baseball (5.0), and scored six runs per game in this series. It was a weird one, but the Giants have no choice but to turn the page, try to get healthy, and get ready to face the Dodgers on Tuesday. Did Mauricio Dubón and Steven Duggar violate the unwritten rules? The Padres sure thought so. But Gabe Kapler and the San Francisco Giants had the explanation to end all explanations for why they did it. Gabe Kapler explained that he liked the plays by Dubón and Duggar because their goal is to exhaust the opponent. They want to force them to throw as many pitches as possible and use as many pitchers as possible. Not to mention the fact that tiebreakers are now determined partially by run differential, so teams should never try to stop scoring. Kapler also explained that the Giants will have no issue with other teams doing this to them. Honestly, this was such a refreshing take and it's good for the game. Giants first base coach Antoan Richardson was ejected following an interaction with Padres third base coach Mike Shildt. Richardson said after the game that Shildt told Gabe Kapler to "control that f—er." Richardson said it was highly inappropriate and had racist undertones. In his absence, however, Alyssa Nakken took over at first base and became the first on-field female coach in the game's long history. And oh by the way, the Giants put a whoopin' on the Padres. They scored 10 runs in the first two innings. Brandon Belt, Joc Pederson, and Wilmer Flores homered. Alex Cobb, making his Giants debut, put together an exciting performance. He struck out 10 in five innings. One turn through the Giants' rotation, it's easy to see why they could be one of the better staffs in the game. Logan Webb and Carlos Rodón get the next two. What if Joey Bart is a bust? The Giants lost a Hall-of-Fame catcher in Buster Posey, and they could crash and burn at the position if 2022 is anything like 2020. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the San Francisco Giants' catching situation heading into the new year, with Bart and Curt Casali poised to get most of the playing time at the critical spot on the diamond. Although Bart is still considered a top prospect by many, there are significant concerns about whether he'll be able to reach his potential. Ben discusses potential alternatives for the Giants, including trades for catchers who could be on the market like the Cubs' Willson Contreras, and the Athletics' Sean Murphy. Contreras, Ben argues, makes the most sense. But it's hard to figure what the return would have to be (Contreras is only under club control for one more season) and where that would leave Bart, who would be understandably upset by such a move. Also discussed on today's show is the fact that rosters will be expanded from 26 to 28 in April. This helps out-of-options players like Mauricio Dubón and Tyler Beede. Thairo Estrada has always seemed destined to make this team (he's out of options as well), but this expansion certainly doesn't hurt. He also recaps the Giants locking up all of their arbitration-eligible players, including Darin Ruf, Curt Casali, Dominic Leone, and Mike Yastrzemski. The Giants' offseason is likely over. Did they do enough to defend their National League West crown? Plenty of fans probably don't think so, and for good reason. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick summarizes the Giants' offseason now that Trevor Story is off the board after signing with the Boston Red Sox. The Giants' pitching staff looks very strong, but their offense appears worse than last year after losing Buster Posey and Kris Bryant. Donovan Solano also departed for the Cincinnati Reds. However, as Ben explains, the Giants' offense was not overly dependent on Posey and Bryant. In fact, their numbers without Bryant, Posey, and Solano in the lineup were not too much worse than their numbers with them. The Giants' strength was in their depth and ability to create favorable matchups on a consistent basis. That should continue in 2022, and addition Joc Pederson fits that mold extremely well. Still, Ben understands how this can be disappointing for fans. He also looks at the Giants' attendance numbers, and how an average of only about 20,000 fans per night in 2021 (and zero in 2020) may be causing the Giants to spend less than anticipated. Compared to selling out every night, half capacity costs the Giants about $85 million per year, according to Forbes. That's more than they make from their television deal in a given year. Hopefully attendance numbers rebound in 2022 and spending can increase as well. If not, it's understandable for fans to be frustrated.
