Chicago Bulls - 1998 Championship Rally (SportsCenter Highlights)
Chicago Bulls - 1998 Championship Rally (SportsCenter Highlights)

June 16, 1998 - On the heels of winning their sixth NBA championship in eight years, the Chicago Bulls were met by a raucous crowd at a capacity rally held in Grant Park in downtown Chicago. Though Michael Jordan's retirement wouldn't become official until January 1999 (just prior to the start of the lockout shortened 1999 season), the general consensus at the time was that the Bulls' six game NBA Finals win over the Utah Jazz was Michael Jordan & company's last ride. By the start of the 1999 season, Chicago's roster had been gutted with Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, and Phil Jackson all having moved on to greener pastures.

Allen Iverson's Two-Handed Tip-Dunk Over Tony Battie (1996 Sweet 16)
Allen Iverson's Two-Handed Tip-Dunk Over Tony Battie (1996 Sweet 16)

March 21, 1996 - Texas Tech entered their Sweet 16 matchup with Georgetown with a 30-1 record, their only loss coming to Eastern Michigan in late December. Then Allen Iverson happened. After a slow first half in which he connected on just 6-of-17 shot from the field, the two time Big East Defensive Player of the Year turned it up in the second half, keying a 17-0 run to push Georgetown to a 98-90 win and a berth in the NCAA's Elite Eight. Iverson finished with 32 points (10-of-29), five assists, and five steals in the win. Tony Battie, the 6-foot-11 center Iverson dunked on in the clip above, was drafted fifth overall in the 1997 draft and went on to play 14 NBA seasons. Georgetown's tourney run—and Allen Iverson's collegiate career—came to an end one game later in an 86-62 loss to Marcus Camby and the University of Massachusetts. UMass then fell to the eventual NCAA champion Kentucky in the Final Four. Kentucky's roster featured six future NBA players (Antoine Walker, Walter McCarty, Derek Anderson, and Tony Delk with Mark Pope and Ron Mercer coming off the bench). For those wondering about the Eastern Michigan team that handed Texas Tech their only other loss, that squad was led by the talented triumverate of Brian Tolbert, Derrick Dial, and yes, 5-foot-5 future NBA super reserve Earl Boykins. They finished first in the MAC and, as a No. 9 seed, upset Duke with a 75-60 victory in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Detroit Pistons vs. Chicago Bulls - NBA Air Cam Highlights (Christmas 1996)

December 25, 1996 - In 1996, NBC introduced the Air Cam, a remote controlled camera suspended above the court by multiple wires intended to provide audiences with a unique look at NBA basketball action. While the camera found favor among many, certain shortcomings (an inability to clearly see the far corner, a tendency for viewers to become disoriented) led to the innovation's short life span. Here, the Air Cam is on full display for a marquee Christmas Day matchup between the 24-3 Chicago Bulls and the 20-5 Detroit Pistons. While the NBC broadcast juggled between the Air Cam and a more traditional press box angle, only highlights from the Air Cam are shown above. In the end, the Bulls defeated the Pistons for the second time of the season, prevailing 95-83. Chicago would go on to win their second consecutive NBA title six months later (their fifth in seven years). The Pistons, meanwhile, won 54 games but faltered down the stretch, entering the playoffs as a fifth seed and falling to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round.
