Grubbs hit his home run on the first pitch he saw against Naithen Dewsnap (1-2). Grubbs finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. That made a winner of freshman Max Balderrama Jr. (1-0), who pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Junior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save. UTRGV (15-10, 2-1 WAC) hit a program record-tying four triples over the first four innings This is the first time UTRGV has hit four triples in a game since March 26, 2006, and just the third time in program history. Sophomore Elijah Alexander hit the first triple to bring home Grubbs and put UTRGV up 1-0 in the first. In the third, with the game tie at 2 and a runner at third, senior Austin Siener and sophomore Tyler Torres hit back-to-back triples as UTRGV took a 4-2 lead. Junior Conrad McMahon added a two-out triple in the fourth. UTRGV also scored in the second when senior Ivan Estrella launched his third home run of the season over the center field wall, and in the sixth, when Grubbs hit an RBI-single. CSU Bakersfield (10-15, 1-2 WAC) scored a run in the second on an RBI-single by Jake Ortega, in the third on a groundout by Austyn Tengan, in the fifth on an RBI-single by Daniel Carrizosa, and in the seventh on an RBI-double by Mark Pena and an RBI-single by pinch-hitter Alec Daily. After playing 20 of its first 25 games at home, UTRGV kicks off a season-long eight-game road trip with the first of three at Utah Valley on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Flores (3-1) faced just three hitters in five of his eight innings, including perfect frames in the first, third and fifth. He induced two of UTRGV's (14-10, 1-1 WAC) three double plays in the seventh and eighth innings. Flores struck out six while scattering six hits and two walks. Junior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson finished up with a scoreless ninth. UTRGV scored against CSU Bakersfield (10-14, 1-1 WAC) starter Davonte Butler (1-4) in each of the first two innings, with sophomore Elijah Alexander scoring on an error in the first and freshman Mercedes alum Oliver Closner IV belting his first-career home run, a two-run shot, into the left field bullpen in the second. Butler settled down to retire 11 of the next 12 hitters, but in the sixth, seniors Austin Siener and Cris Castillo scored on an error to complete the scoring. UTRGV and CSU Bakersfield complete this three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Fans can receive free general admission by helping UTRGV strike out hunger through the donation of five non-perishable food items. Action begins on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the men's heptathlon and 11:15 a.m. with the women's pentathlon. Both events run through Friday. Field events are split between the two days, with the women's high jump, weight throw, long jump and pole vault and men's weight throw and long jump on Friday and the women's shot put and triple jump and men's high jump, pole vault, triple jump and shot put on Saturday. Most running events will have preliminaries on Friday and finals on Saturday, with the exceptions of the 5,000-meter runs, distance medley relays, and 4x400-meter relays. The first two of the aforementioned events will wrap up Friday's action while the 4x400 will put an end to the even on Saturday. The Field The WAC is made up of UTRGV, CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, UMKC, New Mexico State, Seattle U and Utah Valley. All eight institutions field women's indoor track & field teams, but only UTRGV, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, UMKC, Seattle U and Utah Valley field men's teams. WAC Indoor Championships History UTRGV has won two individual WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships since joining the WAC in 2013-14: 2017 - Jennifer Zapata, 3,000-meter run (10:08.30) 2014 - Martin Casse, One-mile run (4:17.80) May Day Paul May enters the WAC Indoor Championships having earned WAC Field Athlete of the Week honor three out of a possible four times. May ranks 86th in the NCAA in the shot put with a program record mark of 17.45 meters at the Howie Ryan Invitational (2/9) and 256th in the weight throw with a mark of 16.162 meters at the Texas Tech Open (2/2). This was UTRGV's (13-12, 4-4 WAC) first victory over GCU (17-8, 6-3 WAC) since Jan. 24, 2015, snapping a six-game skid. Senior Nick Dixon led UTRGV with 22 points while hitting a trio of three-pointers. Sophomore Xavier McDaniel Jr. scored 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc, with five rebounds. UTRGV finished 7-for-16 (.438) from behind the arc against a GCU team that was holding opponents to .273 shooting from downtown entering the game. UTRGV is just the third team to hit seven three-pointers against GCU this season. Alessandro Lever led GCU with 22 points while going 14-of-16 from the line. Casey Benson scored 17 points with 10 rebounds and six assists. Oscar Frayer scored 11 points with four steals. Keonta Vernon scored 11 points. UTRGV and GCU exchanged baskets over the first five minutes, but with the score tied at 11, McDaniel hit a three to spark a 14-4 run to put UTRGV up 25-15. GCU responded with a 15-0 run to take the lead before McDaniel scored nine points to power a 19-8 run that saw UTRGV go up 44-38 early in the second half. GCU scored the next seven points as part of a 13-3 run to take a 51-47 lead. Then, with 15:44 remaining, Dixon sunk a pair of free throws to bring UTRGV within two and the game was separated by no more than three points the rest of the way. GCU led by as much as three on three occasions, including 76-73 with 2:21 to go. McDaniel followed with a layup and then Dixon made two free throws to put UTRGV on top. Lever converted a three-point play to give GCU a 79-77 lead at the 1:09 mark before McDaniel nailed a three to give UTRGV the lead for good. UTRGV looks to pack the house on Saturday at 7 p.m. against defending WAC Champion CSU Bakersfield. The first 300 fans in attendance receive V Nation t-shirts. Doors open at 6. Last Time Out UTRGV posted 20 top-10 finishes at the Houston Invitational last week where they won two events, broke two program records while tying another. Paul May won the men's shot put with a throw of 17.37 meters after breaking his original program record of 16.63 meters with a throw of 16.99 meters in his first throw. May also went on to add an eighth-place finish in the weight throw. Ricardo Mendoza won the men's 800-meter run after crossing the finish line with an indoor personal best time of 1:55.1 Idatonye Cheetham-West set a new program record in the women's 60-meter dash. She reset the record in the preliminary round with a time of 7.74 seconds before coming back in the semifinal round with a time of 7.66 seconds. She also tied the program record in the long jump with a leap of 5.88 meters. She finished in 10th place in the 60-meter dash while finishing eighth in the long jump. Last Year at Houston Invitational UTRGV last competed at Texas Tech during the indoor season back on January 30, 2015. It closed out the Masked Rider Open with seven top-10 finishes where Jennifer Zapata, as a freshman, posted a sixth-place finish in the mile run with a time of 5:15.04. Erika Anderson posted a third-place finish in the weight throw while Cristina Santiago Bravo finished in 10th. Trey Taylor finished in third place in the men's weight throw and Javier Carretero added a 10th place finish. WAC Field Athlete of the Week Times Two Paul May earned his second WAC Field Athlete of the Week honor after setting the program record in the men's shot put. May, who set the program record two weeks prior at the Ted Nelson Invitational, broke his own record with his first throw of the meet which was of 16.99 meters. He later broke the record with a throw of 17.37 meters as he went on to win the shot put. He was the only thrower to surpass the 17-meter mark and his throw ranks first in the WAC and 68th in the country. Next Up UTRGV will be back in action on February 9 when it travels to Seattle for the Husky Classic, hosted by Washington State University.

Graduate student and Weslaco alum Laura Van Tilburg led UTRGV (10-7, 0-2 WAC) with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting, plus 8-of-10 from the line, with eight rebounds, two steals and one block. Junior Nichelle Hyman scored 13 points with three assists and two steals. Jazmyne Bartee led CSUB (8-8, 2-0 WAC) with 13 points and 19 rebounds. Alexxus Gilbert scored a team-high 16 points. Aja Williams finished with 10 points and six rebounds. CSUB led 10-6 after eight minutes, but Van Tilburg hit two free throws and a jumper to spark a 16-0 run that saw UTRGV go up 22-10 midway through the second quarter. During the run, UTRGV went 5-for-10 from the field while holding CSUB 0-for-10. CSUB responded with an 8-0 run to pull within four before Van Tilburg hit two more free throws and two more baskets to put UTRGV up 28-18 at the start of the third. CSUB missed its first 15 three-point attempts, but Kate Tokuhara connected on CSUB's next two attempts to power a 12-3 run that saw CSUB pull within 31-30 midway through the third. CSUB regained the lead near the end of the third on a Jazmine Johnson layup that made the score 36-35 before junior Krisynthia Sampson tied the game with a free throw. Johnson opened the fourth quarter with a jumper put CSUB back on top. CSUB led by as much as eight at 51-43 after a pair of Gilbert free throws with 3:33 remaining. CSUB led 58-53 after a pair of Williams free throws with 20 seconds left, but Sampson nailed a three and then freshman Brownsville Saint Joseph alum Valeria Tapia stole the ensuing inbounds and fed Hyman at the foul line for a jumper that tied the game. CSUB scored the first six points of overtime to take the lead. UTRGV pulled within two at 64-62 on a jumper by junior Idil Türk and 66-64 on a Sampson layup, but that's as close as UTRGV got. UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Grand Canyon. Doors open at 6.

Competition begins with the women’s high jump and the preliminary round of the women’s 60-meter dash at 12 p.m. Who Else Along with UTRGV others competing at the Ted Nelson Invitational are: Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Northwestern (LA), Prairie View A&M, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas Southern, Louisiana Lafayette, and Louisiana Monroe. Texas Living UTRGV will compete in four meets in the state of Texas leading up to the WAC Indoor Championships starting with the Ted Nelson Invitational. They also compete at the Houston Invitational, Texas Tech Open, and the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston. The only regular season meet that will be out of state will be the Husky Classic, hosted by the University of Washington. The NCAA Indoor Championships will also be held in Texas. It will be a familiar location as they will be hosted in College Station by Texas A&M. Last Year at Texas A&M UTRGV opened the indoor season last year with 15 top-10 finishes at the Aggie Team Invitational. Krysta Martinez posted a fifth place finish in the mile run after posting a time of 5:20.46 while Jennifer Zapata finished in seventh with a time of 5:23.55. Paul May added a fifth place finish in the shot put after a throw of 15.40 meters and then he added a 10th place finish in the weight throw after hitting a mark of 15.71 meters. Thalia Polanco posted a second place finish in the 5,000-meter run after she crossed the finish line with a time of 18:59.68. Yariel Matute turned in a fifth place finish in the 400-meter dash after finishing with a time of 49.47 seconds. Next Up UTRGV will be back in action on January 26 when they head to Houston to compete in the Houston Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston.
