UTRGV Women's Basketball Falls to CSU Bakersfield in Overtime

http://goutrgv.com/news/2018/1/11/womens-basketball-falls-to-csu-bakersfield-in-overtime.aspx Jan. 11, 2018 – EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team fell to CSU Bakersfield (CSUB) 67-64 in overtime on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.   Graduate student and Weslaco alum Laura Van Tilburg led UTRGV (10-7, 0-2 WAC) with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting, plus 8-of-10 from the line, with eight rebounds, two steals and one block. Junior Nichelle Hyman scored 13 points with three assists and two steals.   Jazmyne Bartee led CSUB (8-8, 2-0 WAC) with 13 points and 19 rebounds. Alexxus Gilbert scored a team-high 16 points. Aja Williams finished with 10 points and six rebounds.   CSUB led 10-6 after eight minutes, but Van Tilburg hit two free throws and a jumper to spark a 16-0 run that saw UTRGV go up 22-10 midway through the second quarter. During the run, UTRGV went 5-for-10 from the field while holding CSUB 0-for-10.   CSUB responded with an 8-0 run to pull within four before Van Tilburg hit two more free throws and two more baskets to put UTRGV up 28-18 at the start of the third.   CSUB missed its first 15 three-point attempts, but Kate Tokuhara connected on CSUB's next two attempts to power a 12-3 run that saw CSUB pull within 31-30 midway through the third.   CSUB regained the lead near the end of the third on a Jazmine Johnson layup that made the score 36-35 before junior Krisynthia Sampson tied the game with a free throw.   Johnson opened the fourth quarter with a jumper put CSUB back on top.   CSUB led by as much as eight at 51-43 after a pair of Gilbert free throws with 3:33 remaining.   CSUB led 58-53 after a pair of Williams free throws with 20 seconds left, but Sampson nailed a three and then freshman Brownsville Saint Joseph alum Valeria Tapia stole the ensuing inbounds and fed Hyman at the foul line for a jumper that tied the game.   CSUB scored the first six points of overtime to take the lead. UTRGV pulled within two at 64-62 on a jumper by junior Idil Türk and 66-64 on a Sampson layup, but that's as close as UTRGV got.   UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Grand Canyon.
