Girona 1-4 Real Madrid: Gareth Bale on target for second successive game
Girona 1-4 Real Madrid: Gareth Bale on target for second successive game

Gareth Bale scored for the second successive La Liga game as Real Madrid came from behind to beat Girona. The Catalan hosts took the lead when Borja Garcia rifled home from 12 yards before Sergio Ramos equalised with a penalty after Marco Asensio was fouled.Real edged ahead through another penalty won by Asensio - this time taken by Karim Benzema - before Bale's composed finish from Isco's pass.Bale turned provider to set up Benzema to make it 4-1 from close range. The 29-year-old Wales forward also scored in Real's first La Liga game under Julen Lopetegui last week - a 2-0 win over Getafe at the Bernabeu Stadium.Girona, who finished 10th in their first season in La Liga, won the corresponding fixture last season 2-1.And there were signs of another surprise when Garcia finished well after Real's defence had allowed him too much space. There were few complaints about either penalty - Marc Muniesa guilty of lunging into Asensio before Pere Pons' badly timed challenge on Real's number 20.Bale provided the goal of the match after Isco's lovely pass before Benzema sealed the points 10 minutes from time.

Watford v Crystal Palace Match Report, 26/08/2018, Premier League
Watford v Crystal Palace Match Report, 26/08/2018, Premier League

Roberto Pereyra and Jose Holebas were on target as Watford beat Crystal Palace 2-1 but Etienne Capoue was fortunate not to be sent off.Watford and Roberto Pereyra continued their flying starts to the Premier League season as Javi Gracia's men made it three wins out of three by beating Crystal Palace 2-1.Argentinian attacker Pereyra was once again Watford's inspiration, curling home a measured 20-yard finish in the 53rd minute to back up a sparkling opening-day brace against Brighton and Hove Albion.Jose Holebas netted a fortuitous second 19 minutes from time as his cross from the left wing looped over goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and into the far corner. It meant Palace were unable to bounce back from Monday's 2-0 loss to Liverpool and the visitors were entitled to be aggrieved after Etienne Capoue was only booked for an ugly fourth-minute rake down Wilfried Zaha's ankle.Zaha thankfully escaped unscathed and steered a shot through Ben Foster's legs in the 78th minute to set up a grandstand finish. His team made the early running at a sodden Vicarage Road, although Christian Benteke's dwindling confidence was on show. The Belgium striker sent a tame diving header wide before failing to direct a second effort downwards, allowing Foster to claw away.At the start of the second half, Hennessey spread himself to make an eye-watering save at close quarters from Will Hughes. The hosts were in the ascendancy by the time they took the lead. The sight of Zaha being dispossessed and Capoue driving forward to set up Pereyra's superb finish will undoubtedly have irked Roy Hodgson. In the 70th minute, Benteke recovered some of the poise of old as brilliant chest control allowed him to whistle a shot just past the post.Holebas responded with far less precision but to much greater effect.Zaha collected substitute Max Meyer's pass to become Palace's all-time Premier League top scorer and they should have claimed a point when Joel Ward planted a free header wide in the sixth minute of stoppage time.Watford have won their first three games of a Premier League season for the first time and are only behind pacesetters Liverpool on goal difference.Meyer's lively cameo offered encouragement for Hodgson, given Zaha shoulders far too much of Palace's creative burden at present.Few would have backed Watford's gifted Argentinian attacker be at the top of the Premier League scorers' charts at the end of August, but there he sits alongside countryman Sergio Aguero, former team-mate Richarlison and Sadio Mane.It was another marvellous finish from the 27-year-old and Vicarage Road came alive whenever he was on the ball.Boot up the backside: Shameful moment for Capoue The ex-Tottenham man put in a typically industrious performance in the Watford midfield, laying on the opener. But he should never have had the opportunity to do so after the sort of challenge that has no place on a football field.- This was Crystal Palace's first league defeat away at Watford since February 2009 (0-2 in a

Aguero and Jesus a lethal pairing- Manchester City FC
Aguero and Jesus a lethal pairing- Manchester City FC

We’ll come to that shortly, but the Premier League’s official website has looked in detail at the stats behind Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus’ occasional partnership up front for the Blues. It’s a bit of a conundrum for boss Pep Guardiola who has two world class strikers at his disposal but highly effective formations that often require just one of the South American pair rather than both.READ: Jesus looking forward to more Aguero time Earlier this week, Jesus argued he believes he and Aguero can be an effective partnership and premierleague.com agree. They write: “The stats back up Jesus's view that City score more goals when both strikers start.“Since Jesus joined in January 2017, Pep Guardiola's side have played 57 matches in the top flight.“Aguero has started up front without the Brazilian in 27 of those, with City scoring 66 goals at an average of 2.44 per match.“In the 19 that Jesus has started without Aguero alongside him, that average rises to 2.74.“But in the nine matches that the two have started together, 32 goals have been scored at an average of 3.6.“That average dropped to 1.5goals per match in the two matches where neither started, highlighting their importance to City's attack. “Despite their improved scoring rate when they start together, the pair's link-up play for goals can still improve.“Although Aguero has set up four goals for Jesus, the Brazilian has yet to return the favour in the PL, something he will hope to have the chance to do at Molineux this weekend.” One for Pep to decide on! Back to the skipper and his 10-year overview interview premiered on mancity.com yesterday afternoon. If you’ve not seen it yet, now’s your chance… Meanwhile, The Telegraph’s James Ducker focuses on Kompany’s immediate intentions, writing: “Kompany has hinted at his desire to continue playing for Manchester City next season.“The City captain is out of contract next summer but he marked the 10th anniversary of his signing for the club on Wednesday by insisting he still feels he has a lot to offer manager Pep Guardiola going forward.“Kompany has been plagued by injuries in recent years but he has continually overcome doubts about his future by making a series of comebacks and believes he is still improving as a player.“The 32-year-old said he would be ‘connected with City for the rest of my life’, but while the prospect of management, coaching or even an executive type role are all thought to appeal to the player in the long-term, his focus remains firmly on extending his playing days at the moment.‘I think what people have never really understood with me is that aside from having had some injuries I’m actually really lucky to be a really good athlete naturally so I still feel mobile, I still feel strong, that I’m improving and I’m learning so much more about the game,’ Kompany said in an interview with the City website.” Finally, Benjamin Mendy has no plans to stop entertaining his many followers on social media any time soon, but has promised

Paul Scholes hammers Paul Pogba's post-match comments following Manchester United's defeat to Bright

The video will start in 8 Cancel Paul Scholes has layed into Paul Pogba's post-match comments following Manchester United's 3-2 defeat to Brighton - saying there is no defence for them The Red Devils were humbled at the Amex Stadium on Sunday as the hosts put on a battling performance. It was a far from ideal result for United as defending champions and rivals Manchester City made their title intentions clear with a 6-1 win over Huddersfield. And after the Red Devils' defeat, Pogba admitted his attitude was not on point."My attitude was not right," confessed United's captain."It has to be a big lesson for us.They had more hunger than us."I put myself first, that my attitude wasn’t right enough. We made mistakes we shouldn’t make." It was an honest assessment from Pogba but it didn't go down well with Scholes, who could barely believe what he was hearing."I hope that is lost in translation," seethed the legendary Red Devils midfielder."There is no defence for that comment, there is no defence for it."You say it to yourself, don’t you? You’re constantly saying to yourself: 'Attitude right, make sure it’s right'."You don’t need other people to tell you.You don’t need a manager to tell you that or your team-mates." Following the clash Jose Mourinho said: "We were punished by the mistakes we made.‘For me that’s the story of the game."We made incredible mistakes in some crucial moments.Mistakes that killed us.".

Preston 0-1 Derby: Tom Lawrence's superb free-kick seals crucial win
Preston 0-1 Derby: Tom Lawrence's superb free-kick seals crucial win

Tom Lawrence's free-kick ended Derby's run of eight games without a win and secured a crucial 1-0 victory over play-off rivals Preston. The Wales international struck in the second half after Alan Browne missed a first-half penalty.Just two points separated six teams in the Championship play-off race at the start of the afternoon, with Derby fifth and Preston in 10th.The similarity in strength of the two teams was reflected in an even opening to the match, with both enjoying plenty of the ball but neither really able to fashion a clear-cut chance.Preston were the first to hit the target on the half-hour mark when Browne slipped in Callum Robinson, whose low shot was saved with his feet by Scott Carson.Robinson threatened again after 35 minutes, flicking a header just wide of the far post. But Preston had a golden chance to go ahead a minute later from the spot as Browne went down in the area under the close attentions of Andre Wisdom.Midfielder Browne stepped up to take the penalty himself but placed it wide, clipping the bottom of the right-hand post after sending Carson the wrong way.Preston's missed opportunity was made even worse eight minutes after the break as Derby took the lead.Lawrence hit a well-struck free-kick to find the bottom corner from 25 yards but Chris Maxwell will be disappointed not to have saved the effort, having got two hands to the ball.North End had the chance to get back on level terms after 69 minutes as the ball broke to Paul Huntington from a corner but the centre-back volleyed high over the bar from 12 yards.Alex Neil's side, who have not beaten Derby since Boxing Day 2008, were failing to test Carson, despite dominating possession as Louis Moult's mishit shot from range bobbled harmlessly wide. And Derby could have put the game out of reach after 78 minutes when substitute Kasey Palmer breached the Preston defence but fired wide of the far post from 12 yards. The host's best chance to grab the equaliser came seven minutes from time as Carson's punch dropped for Paul Gallagher 12 yards out but fired over the bar with his left foot.

Ipswich 2-2 Millwall: Play-off chasing Lions settle for point
Ipswich 2-2 Millwall: Play-off chasing Lions settle for point

Martyn Waghorn netted twice, Ipswich's first goals in six home games, to deny Millwall the win they needed to create a new club record. The play-off chasing Lions, seeking a seventh straight away victory for the first time in their history, led at half-time through Jake Cooper's fourth goal of the season. But the Tractor Boys, who had started brightly, upped the tempo on the restart and, in a hectic spell, Waghorn struck twice in the space of two minutes before George Saville restored parity soon afterwards.Only the late heroics of Polish international goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, who made several superb saves in a breathtaking final few minutes, denied the visitors as they gave their all in an effort to pocket all three points.Millwall are notoriously early starters, with three goals inside the first minute in three of their four previous games, but it was Ipswich who carved out the game's earliest scoring chance.Waghorn chested down Adam Webster's deep cross from the right and let fly with a shot that Jordan Archer blocked at the near post and when the ball cannoned back to Waghorn, he tried to beat the keeper again but this time Archer stood his ground to make a similar save. The Tractor Boys created another opening three minutes later, Bersant Celina sliding in a reverse pass that released Cole Skuse but from the midfielder's low centre, the ball was scrambled clear at the expense of a corner. But the home side's impressive start almost came undone when Webster was wide with a back pass and Bialkowski only just managed to boot clear off the line as Ben Marshall closed in.Marshall, however, played an important role as the Lions opened the scoring in the 27th minute with their first attempt on target. The on-loan Wolves winger wrong-footed Jordan Spence on the left before clipping in a cross that the unmarked Cooper headed past Bialkowski from six yards.Seven minutes later George Saville made a run into the box to meet Jed Wallace's low centre but he was at full stretch and unable to keep the ball down and it sailed high and wide of the target.Ipswich introduced young striker Ben Folami for his league debut as a half-time replacement for midfielder Myles Kenlock and the 18-year-old Aussie could hardly have anticipated making such an explosive, and immediate, impact. It was as scrappy a goal as Portman Road has witnessed in a long time.Folami forced the ball goalwards after Archer beat away a shot from Skuse and a goalmouth melee ensued before the ball ended up in the back of the net, with Waghorn taking the credit for the decisive last touch.Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Lions as they conceded a second goal just two minutes later.Cooper was short with a back pass and Waghorn pounced, rounding Archer and side-footing into the empty net to take his goal tally for the season to 14.But Neil Harris' team hit back on the hour mark when Bialkowski palmed a Wallace cross straight to the feet of Saville, who promptly unleashed a stunning low

Ipswich's Waghorn double against former club ends Millwall's incredible away run
Ipswich's Waghorn double against former club ends Millwall's incredible away run

IPSWICH striker Martyn Wahgorn bagged a quickfire double to dent his former side's play-off charge.Millwall were chasing a remarkable seventh Championship away win on the spin. And it was on the cards when Lions took the lead with centre-back Jake Cooper nodding in at the back post from Ben Marshall's cross. But the game took a dramatic turn when Martyn Waghorn netted twice inside three minutes. The forward grabbed his first by prodding in at the end of chaotic goalmouth scramble. And he put Town ahead by pouncing on a poor backpass from Cooper to round keeper Jordan Archer and tap into an empty net.George Saville grabbed a Lions leveller with a fine angled strike when the hosts failed to clear.Saville then hit the post as Lions pushed for a winner, blowing a string of chances in a frantic final ten minutes. The result leaves eighth-placed Millwall outside of the play-off on goal difference, while Ipswich are coasting in 13th.

Paddy Pointers: Norwich City 0 Fulham 2 - five observations after City's Championship defeat
Paddy Pointers: Norwich City 0 Fulham 2 - five observations after City's Championship defeat

Our Norwich City correspondent Paddy Davitt delivers his verdict from Carrow Road 1.Fearsome Fulham - This was almost dismissive from a side who will push Cardiff all the way in the battle for automatic Championship promotion. The Cottagers were happy to engage with Daniel Farke’s men in prolonged bouts of possession. But when they moved through the gears midway through the second period it was devastating.Norwich had more than an equitable amount of promising counters but there was a complete absence of clinical intent.Josh Murphy, Mario Vrancic, even James Maddison all had chances to punish Fulham on the counter but City’s play in the final third was again laced with a lack of self-belief.There was never any doubt both Stefan Johansen or Tom Cairney would keep their cool in the defining moments of this game. That is the difference. That is why Fulham extended their unbeaten league run to 17 games.2.Work in progress - Dennis Srbeny again got the nod in front of Nelson Oliveira.Another chance to prove he is adapting to life at a much higher level than the German third tier. That first goal was only foiled by a flying finger tip save from Marcus Betinelli early in the second period after Srbeny unleashed a rising long range effort. The sooner it comes, the quicker for all concerned.Farke has placed plenty of faith in the unproven frontman. But you can still see the rough edges to his game in the manner he was moved off the ball by Denis Odoi when City’s midfield looked to play into feet and build attacks to disrupt Fulham’s passing rhythms.Judgement can wait beyond a period of acclimatisation this season. But patience will not be infinite.3.Happy Harry - The Southampton loanee underlined his versatility with that prolonged stint in a right wing-back role when Ivo Pinto was ruled out recently. The highest compliment perhaps you could pay Reed is he looked anything but an emergency option.Restored to a more familiar holding role here alongside Alex Tettey after about 25 minutes of the opening period he was shunted to the right of the midfield three behind Srbeny to allow Maddison a more central role.Reed is a multi-purpose footballer in the modern mould and should the planets align in the summer and Southampton retain their Premier League status City would be wise to explore the potential of another tour of duty on loan.4.Jumping Jamal - Lewis is now the poster boy for what Norwich’s academy could become should the major transformation of the facilities earmarked for the Canaries’ bond really accelerate the flow of talent into the first team.Prior to the international break the young defender had shown signs of mental and physical fatigue.Daniel Farke has had cause to rue his naivety on occasion but an international break that brought his senior debut for Northern Ireland appeared to have energised the Luton-bred prospect.Lewis was aggressive in his defending and adventurous in his attacking to help pin the Cottagers back.He looked like the confident young
