Ipswich 2-2 Millwall: Play-off chasing Lions settle for point

Martyn Waghorn netted twice, Ipswich's first goals in six home games, to deny Millwall the win they needed to create a new club record. The play-off chasing Lions, seeking a seventh straight away victory for the first time in their history, led at half-time through Jake Cooper's fourth goal of the season. But the Tractor Boys, who had started brightly, upped the tempo on the restart and, in a hectic spell, Waghorn struck twice in the space of two minutes before George Saville restored parity soon afterwards.Only the late heroics of Polish international goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, who made several superb saves in a breathtaking final few minutes, denied the visitors as they gave their all in an effort to pocket all three points.Millwall are notoriously early starters, with three goals inside the first minute in three of their four previous games, but it was Ipswich who carved out the game's earliest scoring chance.Waghorn chested down Adam Webster's deep cross from the right and let fly with a shot that Jordan Archer blocked at the near post and when the ball cannoned back to Waghorn, he tried to beat the keeper again but this time Archer stood his ground to make a similar save. The Tractor Boys created another opening three minutes later, Bersant Celina sliding in a reverse pass that released Cole Skuse but from the midfielder's low centre, the ball was scrambled clear at the expense of a corner. But the home side's impressive start almost came undone when Webster was wide with a back pass and Bialkowski only just managed to boot clear off the line as Ben Marshall closed in.Marshall, however, played an important role as the Lions opened the scoring in the 27th minute with their first attempt on target. The on-loan Wolves winger wrong-footed Jordan Spence on the left before clipping in a cross that the unmarked Cooper headed past Bialkowski from six yards.Seven minutes later George Saville made a run into the box to meet Jed Wallace's low centre but he was at full stretch and unable to keep the ball down and it sailed high and wide of the target.Ipswich introduced young striker Ben Folami for his league debut as a half-time replacement for midfielder Myles Kenlock and the 18-year-old Aussie could hardly have anticipated making such an explosive, and immediate, impact. It was as scrappy a goal as Portman Road has witnessed in a long time.Folami forced the ball goalwards after Archer beat away a shot from Skuse and a goalmouth melee ensued before the ball ended up in the back of the net, with Waghorn taking the credit for the decisive last touch.Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Lions as they conceded a second goal just two minutes later.Cooper was short with a back pass and Waghorn pounced, rounding Archer and side-footing into the empty net to take his goal tally for the season to 14.But Neil Harris' team hit back on the hour mark when Bialkowski palmed a Wallace cross straight to the feet of Saville, who promptly unleashed a stunning low
