Kobe Bryant is one of the best basketball players ever, but this NBA player trash talked him and it went very wrong… #Kobe #NBA #trashtalk Check out my Twitch- https://www.twitch.tv/mjallday2k Instagram- @MJ2K_ALLDAY Twitter- @mj2kallday Trash talk has always been a part of the NBA, but there are just certain players you don’t talk trash to. Why am I showing you this? That one bucket has a lot trash talk behind it. So let’s just get right into it. Drop a like for more stories like this, and as Kobe would say I work hard so subscribe, otherwise Kobe might get a little personal. So the year is 1999, Kobe is 20 years old fresh off of his second season in the NBA, his first All-Star season in which he averaged 15.4 points a game coming off the bench. Kobe was far from a star when he came in the league, but he definitely was beginning to develop into a promising player. That’s when Kobe met Ruben Patterson. Ruben Patterson was a second round pick in the 1998 draft. The 23 year old, 6’ 5” shooting guard was looking for a place in the league. Lakers teammates described him as energetic and aggressive. As Derek Fisher said, ”I was at practice every day, You don’t really have to think about what he’s saying. Because Ruben was a shooting guard, he was matched up with Kobe in practice. Leading up to the first meeting between the Supersonics and Lakers in the 1999-2000 season, Phil Jackson said Ruben didn’t fit well with the Lakers because of his bad shooting, but fits with the Sonics. And then out of nowhere, Ruben Patterson apparently, as the LA times reported in November of 1999, caught the Lakers attention by calling himself the “Kobe Stopper”. He didn’t say anything at the time, but after Kobe retired, he said I had to torch him. That next game against the Sonics, Kobe drops 31 and 6 on 61% shooting from the field coming off of a 3 day road trip. The funny thing is, Ruben Patterson wasn’t matched with Kobe, he was matched on to Glen Rice, and would at times switch on to Kobe. And when he did, Kobe got him. Soon there would be a game in which Ruben heavily guarded Kobe and sh*t got crazy. I want to focus on and that’s on April 14, 2004, the last game of the 2003-2004 regular season. At this point in time, Ruben is on the Trail Blazers and Kobe and the Lakers are trying to win their 4th straight championship. Kobe at this point is a full on superstar. Yeah So the game starts with Kobe being Kobe and Ruben watching from the bench. And when Ruben came in, well it was like he wasn’t even there. Kobe made it look like it was clockwork and Ruben got switched off of him as the Blazers opted to throw another body at Kobe. Kobe gets by Ruben, gets fouled with 55 seconds left. He misses the first and misses the second. This is also during their tumultuous season with his teammates doubting Kobe’s shot selection. Fast forward and Kobe has Ruben on a string on the perimeter, he pump fakes, gets Ruben Patterson to bite, and misses. Kobe easily got the shot he wanted and missed it. This isn’t great defense, Kobe was toying with Ruben again. And then this happens. This time he played the best defense he ever played on Kobe on the most important possession he has ever defended Kobe on and it didn’t matter. There was no one player that can stop Kobe. Yeah the game was slightly important for the Lakers, but you know Kobe takes every game seriously. He was able to shut all the Ruben Patterson talk and justify his shot selection at the same time. Keep in mind that Kobe had been wanting to destroy Ruben and this was probably the best way to do it, until he kinda did again when he hit this in double overtime. Ruben Patterson actually went the wrong way on this screen, going around instead of cutting in and so another player made the late switch to cover up for it and that little airspace was enough for Kobe to hit the game winner. You know how many points Ruben had. 2. IAfter the game, Ruben asked Kobe for his shoes. Ruben was in disbelief, Ruben did a complete 180. (Wow) Kobe finished that game with 37 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists including 12 in that 4th quarter. In an interview in 2006 by ESPN, Kobe was directly asked about the “Kobe Stopper” and he just said "Oh, come off it, are you kidding me?" Bryant said incredulously. "Last time I had like 40 against the guy." According to Ruben Patterson later on his career, Shawn Kemp gave him that nickname when he was in Portland and that Ruben never called himself the Kobe Stopper. But then why is there an article in 1999 from the LA Times that says you called yourself the Kobe Stopper. Forget all the stats. Forget all the other times Kobe roasted Ruben. Just know Kobe immortalized Rube Patterson in this one highlight and know, trash-talking Kobe doesn’t usually end well. But what do you think? Where do you rank Kobe all time?
The NBA is now filled with superstar duos. We have Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, Russell Westbrook and James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, wait go back to Anthony Davis. Anthony Davis in his time with the Pelicans wasn’t surrounded by much, but he was once a duo with another superstar. #NBA #Duo Check out my Twitch- https://www.twitch.tv/mjallday2k Instagram- @MJ2K_ALLDAY Twitter- @mj2kallday The Pelicans in 2017-2018 had a roster that included both Boogie and Davis. Keep in mind that DeMarcus had been traded midseason in 2016-17 and so there hadn’t been much time to gel that previous season. The beginning of the 2017 season was a chance to really see what the two were made of and we did. Let’s talk about what each did for each other. Keep in mind that Anthony Davis is the jack of all trades as a big man. He can finish around the rim using his 7’ 6” wingspan and soft touch. He can post up down low and hit a fadeaway or hook, even if he doesn’t post up often because he’s just not overpowering. AD can step up to the 3 point line and knock it down, he’s a midrange assassin and has handles to get by people from the perimeter and either pull up or drive to the hole. There’s really no weaknesses in his game and so you would think just about anybody would fit with Anthony Davis, except Anthony Davis has his preferences. AD likes playing his natural position of power forward over center due to floor positioning. Over 60% of his shots were with less than 2 seconds of getting the ball. DeMarcus Cousins is a different story. Boogie is an overpowering force, a guy that likes to operate in the low post. But even with the Kings offense revolving around him, the Kings had the highest pace in the league. That means that DeMarcus was no stranger to a faster style offense so even with him being 6’ 11” 270 lbs, Boogie was able to keep up. That’s because Boogie also has handles. DeMarcus was evolving his game from the slow grinded out post game to keep up with the fast-paced, 3 point revolution, shooting 33% from 3 in 2015-16 after previously shooting 0.1 3s a game. Boogie was also a really good passer for a big man and just had natural instincts on drop passes inside the paint, or kicking it out to the open 3 point shooter. Since DeMarcus played the 5, AD was able to slide to his natural position at the 4. Anthony Davis averaged a career high 28.1 points per game that season. He also averaged a career high 34% from 3. DeMarcus’s presence down low afforded Anthony Davis space on the perimeter where an either undersized 4 or smaller guard awaited him. DeMarcus Cousins averaged a career high 5.4 assists per game as a center, most of those assists going to Anthony Davis. A lot of those were lob passes to Anthony Davis as Boogie and AD ran an interesting pick and roll with AD as the roll man and Cousins as the ball handler. That means that both the defense’s big men are at the top of the key and so AD really has no one to contest him at the paint if he rolls and if Boogie can deliver him a dotted pass. On top of that, DeMarcus doesn’t just stay in the low post area, he’ll come out to the three point line and actually sizeup his defender which is typically the center. While he was on the Kings, he was really the only guy the defense had to focus on. With AD on the court, there’s less defensive help on the drive and so Boogie had his best driving season, shooting 52.2% on all drives. In fact, Boogie had his most efficient season ever, with a career high effective field goal percentage of 53%. DeMarcus Cousins took a career high 6.1 3s a game shooting his second highest 3 point field goal percentage at 35.4%. Davis would often get two players to attach on to him on the roll meaning Cousins got so many open looks. Boogie averaged 25.2 points that season. There’s also a thing called rebounding and both of these guys are just, well, really good at it. All what I said are the on-court tangibles that can be analyzed along with some on-court intangibles like timing and awareness. But what about the off-court intangibles. Davis and Cousins loved playing with each other. In limited minutes in 30 games, Cousins did average 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds and his passing ability hasn’t just disappeared. I do think he can be better than what he showed last season, but even if he isn’t, most of what I talked about with them as a duo still apply. A lot of these other duos are just purely based off of talent, but this duo is much, much more than that and honestly, we need to keep an eye on DeMarcus and Davis. But what do you think? How will DeMarcus play next season? How about the Lakers.
Kawhi Leonard signed with the Clippers and Paul George was traded to the Clippers in this crazy NBA Free Agency, but Kawhi intentionally hurt the Lakers. #NBA #Kawhi Check out my Twitch- https://www.twitch.tv/mjallday2k Instagram- @MJ2K_ALLDAY Twitter- @mj2kallday Kawhi Leonard just signed with the Clippers for a 4 year $142 million dollar deal and convinced Paul George to demand a trade. (Kawhi Laugh) The Clippers then traded 4 unprotected first round picks, 1 protected first round pick, 2 pick swaps, Danilo Gallinari, and Shai Gilgeous Alexander for Paul George. The Lakers are left in a tough spot which was the plan. \With Kawhi and Paul George going to the Clippers, the Lakers watched all possible quality free agents sign with other teams without the Lakers even giving an offer. If you don’t remember, the Lakers had 6 players signed to their active roster. Anthony Daivs, LeBron, Kuzma, Troy Daniels, Horton-Tucker, and Jared Dudley. They just signed Danny Green, Cadwell Pope, and JaVale McGee to make it 9 players which I will get into, but they saw free agents like Seth Curry, J.J. Reddick, Bioojan Bogdonovic, Brook Lopez all sign without even meeting the Lakers simply because the Lakers were waiting out on Kawhi. They were betting that Kawhi would sign with them, but this was always a very real possibility that Kawhi would either resign with the Raptors or go to the Clippers. If Kawhi decided late in free agency that he wasn’t going to the Lakers, the Lakers understood that they would be in their current predicament of having a lot of cap space with no one to spend it on. Kawhi and Paul George met in LA earlier this week in which Kawhi asked PG to team up with him on the Lakers. He never had the intention of building a superteam with the Lakers, yet he still entertained them. Kawhi met with the Lakers, Clippers, and Raptors on Monday. In that meeting with the Clippers, he specifically told Steve Ballmer that if they can get PG, he’s coming to the Clippers. Keep in mind that Paul George just resigned last season and has 3 years left on his contract. To tell the Clippers that they need to get Paul George and to tell Paul George to join him, He got Paul George to demand a trade from the Thunder. The Thunder who already had just lost in back to back first rounds, were thinking of blowing it all up already and so as crazy as it seems to trade a guy who was an MVP candidate with 3 years left on his contract in his prime, the situation presented itself. And here come the Clippers, knowing that if they are able to get Paul George, that they would also secure Kawhi. That trade wasn’t for one superstar, it was for two, and so when you look at the 7 first round picks along with Shai and Galinari, think about that being the trade offer for Kawhi and PG in their primes for 4 and 3 years respectively. The Clippers also have a championship winning coach in Doc Rivers who beat the Lakers with the richest owner in the NBA in Steve Ballmer with possibly the best executive in NBA history in Jerry West, you know the logo, the guy who made the Lakers actually good at trading and signing players. Once again, if it was just Kawhi with great role players, the Lakers still had two of the top 5 players in the NBA and so with average role players, the Lakers would be the favorites, but the addition of Paul George leaves the Lakers at a severe disadvantage. Keep in mind that each year for LeBron is important, because we don’t know how many years of high level play LeBron has left. This is not me saying of LeBron doesn’t have enough help because LeBron has AD, but I’m talking about the potential missed and the repercussions of it. He will turn 35 during this upcoming season and so missing out on role players this offseason wastes another year of what the Lakers could have been, a year that is so precious. The issue is that 2 year deals or even 1 year of overpaying and missing out on 40% of the league being free agents is failing to equip AD and LeBron with what could have been in their small window for a championship with LeBron aging, and all of that is a direct product of Kawhi Leonard toying with the Lakers. We also know that by Kawhi and Magic’s conversations being leaked, Kawhi was probably liking the Lakers less and less. Well Kawhi gave the Clippers a test to see how much they wanted him by giving them one demand. Kawhi played this perfectly. Uncle Dennis really got the sage advice. Whoever is in his circle is really telling Kawhi the right things. There was no losing situations out of those 3 places for Kawhi. This has to be the single greatest offseason in NBA history and this move by Kawhi and Paul George has to be one of the slickest, quietest moves made by two superstars that sucker punched their biggest competition, but what do you think? Who’s winning the championship in 2020?
Monta Ellis was a star on the Warriors when Stephen Curry came into the NBA. Now Monta Ellis is trying to comeback, but what happened to him? #NBA #Warriors #Monta Check out my Twitch- https://www.twitch.tv/mjallday2k Twitter- @mj2kallday (https://twitter.com/mj2kallday?lang=en) Instagram- @MJ2K_ALLDAY Before the Warriors were the Warriors of today, they were a struggling team that was just bad. But at the core of the Warriors were the young Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis. The Warriors almost traded Curry away and built around Monta Ellis, but were absolutely lucky. While Stephen Curry would thrive, Monta Ellis would find himself out of the league at the age of 31, not because of injury, but because no one wanted him anymore. As a 6’ 3” combo guard coming straight outta high school, he had experienced nothing but success. In his senior year of high school, Monta averaged a ridiculous 38.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 4.5 steals. At one point he scored 72 points in a game, and he was named the National Player of the Year. He won two state championships and was runner up twice in his 4 years of college. Monta had the utmost confidence in himself and you could see it in his game. He was a ball hog. In fact, even before the draft, this is what scouts had to say about him. “He loves to dribble and dribble and dribble and then dribble some more. AAU ball has basically left him no grasp or comprehension of team basketball or fundamentals, and he probably wouldn't understand what's wrong with that if you tried to explain it to him.” That same report said that “He's a 6-3 SG with absolutely no PG skills whatsoever. That will limit his potential to contribute minutes initially unless he ends up on a horrible team.” And he did get drafted to a bad team. The Warriors were coming off of a 34-48 record. They hadn’t made the playoffs for 11 straight years at that point. All this led to the one player who would inadvertently drive Monta Ellis away from the Warriors. And that would be the baby-faced Stephen Curry, everyone's nightmare. As soon as Curry was drafted, Monta Ellis immediately had a problem. When asked by the media how him and Steph could play together, he simply said, “We can’t.” and that “We’re not gonna win that way.” Monta already played with a point guard like Baron Davis so you would think drafting Stephen Curry wouldn’t be that big of a problem, except drafting Curry who hadn’t shown that great of point guard skills, made people think that Monta would play more of the point guard position. I can understand where he’s coming from and after his girlfriend persisted that he apologize to Steph for those comments, Monta did and said his problem was with management. Monta went on to have his best season in 2009-10, averaging 25.5 points and 5.3 assists on 45% shooting and 31% from 3 in 41 minutes a game. Steph was surprised when he got an invite to Ellis’s wedding and thought it was Ellis’s fiance. Of course the Warriors management noticed this and saw that Curry had a great rookie season averaging 17.5 points and 5.9 assists off of 46% from the field and 44% from 3. Stephen Curry even won the sportsmanship award. But… the Warriors management wasn’t the management of today. They chose Monta and looked to trade Steph, at least based off the Bucks owner Marc Lasry who said the Warriors offered Stephen Curry for Andrew Bogut and the Bucks rejected them because of Steph’s ankle health. Steph had tweaked his ankles five times in the season before and in the offseason, he went through offseason surgery and in January of 2012, he sprained his ankle again. So the Warriors with no other real options, decided to trade Monta instead of Steph and take a chance on Steph. Warriors fans loved Monta and booed Chris Mullin at his jersey retirement. The Mavericks would make the 8th seed in 2014 and Monta averaged 20 points in that series losing. In the 2015 playoffs at the age of 29, Monta averaged 26 points in 5 games in the playoffs along with 5.2 assists shooting 47% from the field and shooting 37% from 3 on 6 3s a game. It was his peak, but the Mavs still lost. The thing is I think Monta could be effective if he’s added a 3 ball and if he’s the leader of the second unit. Being out of the league should be a humbling experience and make you hungrier. He’s only 33 and so he definitely shouldn’t be a washed player, even with all those minutes. Teams are worried about Ellis’s knee, but at the end of that day, Monta Ellis has himself to blame for his career, but I think that if he’s changed himself, he really can be exciting and help a team out. But what do you think? Will Monta Ellis comeback to the NBA? If so, then which team will he sign with?
D’Angelo Russell is on the Warriors through a sign and trade in this NBA Free Agency. The Warriors might trade him, but D’Angelo is perfect with Curry and the Warriors. #NBA #Warriors #D’Angelo Check out my Twitch- https://www.twitch.tv/mjallday2k Instagram- @MJ2K_ALLDAY Twitter- @mj2kallday The Warriors don’t stay down. When they lost in 2016, they got Kevin Durant. Now when Kevin Durant was walking from the Warriors in free agency, they somehow were able to reload and D Lo out of that. I literally think the Warriors are playing MyLeague in 2K. Now there are reports of the Warriors looking to trade Russell for solid role players. But the Warriors should keep D’Angelo Russell so let’s break all this down. D’Angelo Russell is an All-Star point guard who just averaged 21.1 points and 7 assists in 30 minutes a game and get this, he’s only 23 years old. He was just sign-and traded with a 4 year $117 million dollar contract. There’s a lot of talk about Curry and D’Angelo not being able to coexist because of redundancies, because both are star point guards and Russell has been ball dominant. But let’s look at some of the problems the Warriors have. This is not the same 2015-2016 team without Durant. It’s something the Warriors lack when Curry is not on the floor. Keep in mind that Klay Thompson will be out for most of the season and that they traded Andre Iguodala and now you have a Warriors team that has no shot creators besides Curry. Russell’s not super quick, but he has great spatial awareness, knowing where the defense and offensive players are positioned. Like I said with Kawhi, DLo is also does things in “slow motion” waiting for defender’s feet to open up especially that in between the leg dribble and being in control of what he wants to do. On all catch and shoot 3s, DLo shot 39.4%. This means he can be a floor spacer that can help draw some of the attention away from Curry and Klay when he returns. Also, almost 50% D’Angelo Russell’s offensive possessions involved a pick and roll. Instead of having to rely on a Curry and Green pick and roll, you get a Russell-Green pick and roll in which Russell can pick apart the defense and kick it to a Draymond Green who can make a play from inside the paint. There’s also the upside that Dlo can get hot at any moment and become a guy who is just unstoppable. We’ve seen DLo light teams up no matter how many defenders are thrown at him like the 27 point fourth quarter. We’ve also seen him be clutch and have ice in his veins. He averaged 3.1 points in the clutch off of 45% shooting from the field. For reference, Durant averaged 3.4 points off 41% shooting in clutch last season while Curry averaged 3.9 points off 47% shooting. While he hasn’t shown much off-ball prowess, you could figure that he could would be ingratiated in the Warriors offense. Players like Kevin Durant adjusted to the Warriors free-flow offense. Durant was also a ball dominant, heavy iso player before he joined the Warriors. With a guy like DLo, Stephen Curry will return to being the clear number 1 option, but that doesn’t mean he is a stranger to sharing the ball. and with a guy like Stephen Curry, Russell can learn a lot of tactics and skills. I think the thing we forget the most about D’Angelo Russell is that he’s only 23. Curry consistently has been one of the best finishers in the league, finishing top 5 in field goal percentage in the paint among all players. And he’s shown to be a super saiyan, when teams kick him to the dirt, he only gets stronger. While he is 6’ 5” with a 6’ 10” wingspan, Russell has not been good defensively. He has the tools to do it and like I said, being around Klay Thompson might help him pick up some techniques. Trading Russell would mean either getting back $28 million dollars in salary or trading to a team that has cap along with strong role players on cheaper contracts. Now remember, the Warriors also traded Andre Iguodala away to clear cap space to facilitate the D’Angelo Russell sign and trade. And don’t tell me Andrew Wiggins is an equivalent piece for a trade, cause he’s not. So for what the Warriors have lost, I’m not sure how much they could really get back from a single team to help right now. Keep in mind that Curry is still in his prime years and Klay will be coming back later this season. Curry is a generational talent and so the Warriors obviously want to have great players right now. DLo provides an all-star talent right now while also being a future piece that grows. I know DLo is not perfect, but for his upside and what he has shown he can bring along with the fact that he’s only 23 years old that help them win now, the Warriors need to keep him. But what do you think? Should the Warriors keep DLo? How far can they go with Russell?
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving went to the Brooklyn Nets in this crazy NBA Free Agency, but there’s more to this Durant and Kyrie signing for the Nets. #NBA #Durant #Kyrie Check out my Twitch- https://www.twitch.tv/mjallday2k Instagram- @MJ2K_ALLDAY Twitter- @mj2kallday The bromance was real the whole time, Kyrie and KD. Kevin Durant is signing a 4 year $164 million dollar deal and Kyrie Irving signed a 4 year $141 million dollar deal. The Knicks just got finessed. But the Nets have more than just those two and with Deandre on the way, let’s break all this down including their problems. The Brooklyn Nets had planned to have major cap space in the 2019 free agency which led them to have $68 million dollars in cap space for this scenario to happen. With Durant and Kyrie signing that uses up all their current cap space without getting rid of any of the players they currently have. That means the Nets are in a far better situation than the Lakers who besides LeBron and AD, have one really good budding star in Kyle Kuzma. The Nets have a whole playoff roster that is young. Spencer Dinwiddie who just averaged 16.8 points and 4.6 assists while playing the 6th man role, which is the role he would be playing again now that they have Kyrie Irving. Deandre Jordan is on the way whom I will talk about, you also have the young fro who’s been blocking everyone in Jarrett Allen. He’s not your stretch big man, he’s your old school big man that dominates the paint, averaging 10.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in 26 minutes of play last season. And get this, he’s only 20. He’s got room to improve and grow from here. When it comes to defense, he’s averaging 1.6 blocks a game, but more importantly, he’s impacting shots. Now you might not know Joe Harris, but he’s the guy who the 3 point contest this year so let me reintroduce him. Meet Joe Harris, the guy that shot over 47% from 3 this season. He’s a 6’ 6” knockdown shooter that provides great floor spacing. There’s not much more to Joe Harris’s game beside 3 point shooting, but he’s so good at it and in this type of roster, you need guys to have defined roles and so there you go. He’s also 27 years old. Caris LeVert returned from injury this year after being a solid role players playing both the 2 and the 3. I see him as a guy who’s just a solid role player who can handle the ball and create his own shot. On top of that, you have Deandre Jordan, a former member of lob city, you know when he did this to Brandon Knight. Just last season, he averaged 11 points and 13.1 rebounds per game which was the 3rd highest in the league. And him and KD are close which is good for team chemistry. Everything looks great right? Yeah, but let’s talk about Kyrie and KD because if we talking about a dynasty, we need to talk about these 3 and the potential problems the Nets have. Kevin Durant is 30 years old coming off a ruptured achilles. We honestly don’t know what we are gonna get from KD. Is he gonna come back and be that dominant guy we saw in the playoffs, giving you 35 a night? He will also sit out the next season meaning we are going to see Durant back when he’s 32. From that moment on, he’s going to have 3 years left on that contract. 32 is an age many players begin to slow down, but with the new age of medicine, it seems that players are playing at a higher level for longer. We’ve also seen the greats like Jordan and LeBron be extremely effective and dominant to the age of 35. I don’t think there are any questions on Kyrie being effective till the age of 31. He’s 27 right now and about to really head into his prime. I think people forget just how good Kyrie is. In the 2016 NBA Finals, Kyrie averaged 27 points while playing alongside LeBron and hitting the shot. He just averaged 24.4 A pairing of him and Durant seems interesting because Kyrie wanted a team to be his team and Durant wanted to have his rings mean more. There is however injury history with Kyrie and his knees. He got injured in the 2015 NBA Finals and in 2018, he was sidelined with a knee injury for the entire playoffs. Both KD and Kyrie are the two superstars that make the Nets this championship team, but both are question marks in terms of health. On top of that, the Nets have no real power forward. That would leave Durant at the 4, but that wouldn’t be the best spot for Durant who’s best position is the 3. That’s something that can be answered next free agency with the free cap they have. So yeah, we look at these signings and we go crazy because Irving and Durant are actually together, but choosing to go to Brooklyn was a smart choice because the structure and pieces they already have are meant to last for years. There are still some questions to be answered on health and their power forward spot, but I mean, the Nets somehow accomplished the impossible and did a rebuild with no draft picks. But what do you think? Who’s winning the 2020 NBA championship?
Kawhi Leonard got the Raptors to the NBA Finals against the Warriors, but why has Kawhi been so good in the playoffs? Can the Raptors beat the Warriors?
The Damian Lillard Russell Westbrook Rivalry was real long before the NBA Playoffs, so let’s break down this NBA Rivalry. #Lillard #NBA #Rivalry First, we just witnessed greatness. I was watching this possession and I’m like why has he not made his move as the time went down to 3 seconds. Yeah, that’s because he hit a 37 footer to win the series and even waved goodbye to the Thunder. Just perfect. Russell Westbrook hates everyone. First it was Embiid, and they still don’t like each other. Now it’s Damian Lillard. But this rivalry started before this playoffs and before this year, so let’s break this down. Westbrook and Lillard have matched up for 28 times including these playoffs. That’s a lot. And in the regular season, Westbrook leads 12-11 in wins. Let’s go back to 2016 when Russell Westbrook for some reason just kicked the ball away from Lillard as he tried to pick it up. Lillard took exception to that and they both started to argue. Honestly, it didn’t really make sense at the time. I mean why kick the ball away from a guy trying to pick it up. Looking at that game, the Thunder were down 9 at that point in the game. Even when Russ was asked after the game why he kicked the ball, he said “I don’t know” in typical defiant Westbrook fashion. Lillard played it off and said that they were cool, but that’s Lillard’s personality. Lillard typically has a calm head on him. Yeah he can get fired up but he’s more of a laid back person. The Trail Blazers would end up winning that game, but the next 3 times they met that season, Russell Westbrook dropped 42, 45, and 58 points. Yes this was during his MVP season, but even for Westbrook, those numbers are crazy. And then in January of 2018, Damian Lillard said he was frustrated that he hadn’t made the all star team for the past two years. Damian Lillard was selected for the All-Star team by the coaches and then Westbrook came out and said that you’ve got guys complaining about getting snubbed until they get in, you’ve got guys just talking about it all the time. But the guys that deserve it, are not. Even if Westbrook was lobbying for his teammate Paul George to make the team, he pretty much disrespected Lillard who was vocal about being snubbed. Damian Lillard would say that he respects Russ a lot so it was disappointing. In January of this year, Russ made the now famous comments that he’s been busting that ass for years. This crossover definitely did not help Damian’s cause. It was really the first real trash talk that was caught on camera or visible beef between the two in a game since 2016. Russ hadn’t really trash talked in the entire game until the end of the fourth quarter with Damian Lillard at the line. Game 2 was when Lillard and Russ got tangled and tensions started to rise. Lillard defends Russ well on this play, gets hype, and proceeds to make a 31 footer. Throughout the series and especially in game 3, Westbrook was calling Lillard a b*tch after almost every basket he scored. Game 3 was the Thunder’s only win and they put on a lot of antics from Paul George’s last dunk as time was expiring to all the trash talk. Schroder mocked Dame time. Harkless said it was good to shut them up after their game 4 win. Westbrook did his infamous rock a baby twice on Lillard. Lillard would later say that you do that celebration if you overpower someone, not if you should jumpshots out of the post. Before Game 5, Lillard had a few people over for dinner and said that Westbrook was celebrating all wild and saying some wild shit. And quote, “That’s the difference between us.” because Lillard wasn’t talking trash to Westbrook. He was just doing his job. Lillard also said “Stop running from this ass whoopin” while showing clips of Russ switching off of Dame while Dame was guarding Russ on the other end. And he has a point. You can’t be talking all this trash and not even guard the other player. That’s facts. And he concluded that he was gonna finish those motherffers in the next game. Well damn Dame. Just wow. And then Game 5 happened. Dame waved goodbye to the Thunder because the series was over. It was retaliation for all the trash talk and mockery that the Thunder did in Game 3. Paul George said it was a bad shot, Dame responded with a lol and said if anything it was bad defense. Straight savage. Dame also posted this on instagram and captioned it, on to the next. Straight savage. And that leads us to today and where we are in the rivalry. The Thunder Trail Blazers rivalry was already getting real, but this solidified it. There’s bad blood between Westbrook and Lillard, and it seems like Dame had the final words to say which he earned and Westbrook fizzled out and just didn’t perform at the level he needed to. This is definitely an exciting rivalry because it’s point guard vs point guard. But what do you think? Who’s the better player?
