He started P13, passed five cars on his opening lap - and was up to P3, chasing down his Red Bull team-mate, Sergio Perez, after only four racing laps of Spa. And then he won it. With ease. Going away. Max Verstappen, the 2021 World Champion, proved so untouchable in every department at Spa that he even set fastest lap on medium-compound Pirelli race tyres. In this video, Peter Windsor analyses the speed of the Adrian Newey-engineered Red Bull RB18 in the context of the new FIA Technical Directive that at Spa was policed for the first time. He looks at the first-lap accident that eliminated Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton - and at Ferrari's long, long afternoon (which resulted in a closely-run P3 finish for Carlos Sainz). On the face of it, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz went ahead and parlayed his first pole into his first race win...but of course that barely touches the essence of the British GP at Silverstone. Alfa's Guanyu Zhou, who had qualified an excellent P9, escaped from an enormous first-corner accident triggered by cars around him. Then, just when Max Verstappen seemed to be heading for an easy win, his Red Bull slowed with suspected rear diffuser damage. The Ferrari of Charles Leclerc was also battle-scarred from early on but, even so, Leclerc drove brilliantly to take the lead from his team-mate, Carlos Sainz. Also right up there, pushing the Ferrari's was Silverstone's favourite son, Lewis Hamilton; his revised Mercedes was imperfect but, with the latest updates, was still massively better than it had been only a few races before. Then, with ten laps to go, it all changed. Ferrari used a Safety Car deployment to fit the Sainz car with new soft Pirellis; Leclerc was left out there on old hard tyres and, despite fierce defence was quickly devoured by both Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Lewis. That left Sainz a 3-sec winner of his first Grand Prix - the British, at Silverstone, in a Ferrari - from Perez and Hamilton. Leclerc eventually finished a frustrated P4. With Ferrari's Charles Leclerc banished to the back of the grid for the Canadian GP (due to engine-change penalties), the pressure was off as Red Bull's Max Verstappen headed into qualifying for Sunday's Canadian GP. Except that it rained. And anything can happen in the wet. Showing his class, though, the World Champion perfectly prosecuted all three segments of qualifying to take the pole by the margin of 0.7sec - not from Ferrari's Carlos Sainz but from 40-year-old Fernando Alonso, who dazzled all day in the blue-and-pink Alpine-Renault. Sainz duly qualified third - ahead of Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who watched his team-mate, George Russell, slide onto the grass on slicks in the closing minutes - and the two Haas-Ferrari drivers, Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher. It was - you might say - a qualifying session with a difference, as Peter Windsor details in this video. The start - and the opening laps - promised so much in Baku. Then, quickly, the two Ferraris were out of it: Carlos Sainz pulled off, triggering a Virtual Safety Car. Then, while leading the race after an early stop for tyres, the power unit in Charles Leclerc's Ferrari blew asunder. With the phenomenal qualifying and early-lap pace of Sergio Perez already disappearing amidst the hotter track temperatures of Sunday, it was Max Verstappen who thus won easily for Red Bull - and, in so doing, scored a massive championship points advantage. George Russell finished a gritty third for Mercedes, ahead of his team leader, Lewis Hamilton (who was in agony due to the persistent Mercedes porpoising) and Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly led home the two-stop mid-field pack. In this video, Peter Windsor looks back at an eventful - and perhaps pivotal - Sunday in Baku - and delves deeper in the tyre deg problems that coloured the race of Sergio Perez. From the pole, and with fastest lap along the way, Red Bull's Max Verstappen dominated the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola on Sunday. And, this time, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc never had a look in. Adrian Newey's RB18 was superior to the F1-75 in every department - and in the closing laps, to cap it all, while pushing hard on a new set of soft tyres, Charles Leclerc spun from P3 to P6. With Carlos Sainz being nudged out of the race on the first lap, first chicane, it was a day that the packed Imola crowd will want to semi-forget - particularly as Sergio Perez underlined the RB18's pace with a very strong run into P2. Lando Norris finished an excellent P3 for McLaren; George Russell withstood late-race pressure from Alfa's Valtteri Bottas to finish P4 for Mercedes - but Lewis Hamilton, who finished P13, was never in the running even for a point. The Saturday sprint F1 race at Imola looked to be another demonstration of unabashed superiority by Charles Leclerc and Ferrari...until the right-front Pirelli on the F1-75 began to grain and thus to lose grip. Then Max Verstappen, the tyres on his Red Bull RB18 working perfectly, closed in for the kill. In this video, at 06:20, Peter Windsor offers a suggestion as to why there was such a difference in late-race tyre performance between the two cars. Calling on data from FP2 at Imola this morning, Peter also looks ahead to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola on Sunday, when the protagonists will also be using harder Pirelli compounds. (Even so, the soft tyre still looks to be very raceable off the line, even with a higher fuel load.) Peter also analyses another disappointing day for Mercedes; a strong result for McLaren-Mercedes and Alfa Romeo; and the impressive drive by Haas' Mick Schumacher. Craig Scarborough details the new Red Bull RB18, livery-launched last week but on rapid display over the past few days at the Barcelona shake-down test. Unsurprisingly, Adrian Newey's new car appears to be a gem: the aero package looks to be detailed and efficient - and there's a revolutionary front suspension layout to celebrate too. The RB18 carries the number one this year, in deference to Max Verstappen's victory in the 2021 FIA World Drivers' Championship, while Mexico's Sergio Perez races as Max's wing-man in his second season with the team. Craig Scarborough details the new W13 Mercedes to be driven in 2022 by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. As the reigning F1 World Constructors' Champions, Mercedes have been penalised more than any of their rivals in terms of wind tunnel and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) research time...so the approach of the Brackley-based team to the new F1 regulations was always going to be a show-stopper. How radical is the new car? And what are its key features? Craig offers his opinion in this video, filmed in the studio of Knockout TV with Peter Windsor.
