Nicolo Melli 20 Points/6 Threes Full Highlights (2/23/2020)
Nicolo Melli 20 Points/6 Threes Full Highlights (2/23/2020)

Nicolo Melli and Zion Williamson are the most dynamic rookie bigman tandem that I can think of in a long time. The realities of the NBA draft are such that it's hard to get even one young stud big, much less two. You can try and game the system by drafting Euro stashes or maybe a guy who will miss a whole year so he can still be a rookie in the next one, but it's still hard. And the Pelicans have pulled it off. With aplomb. Melli and Williamson complement each other perfectly. Williamson likes to dunk and be a beast inside, overpowering people with his strength, while Melli likes to hang around the three-point line and be a soft Euro, overpowering people with his skills. Normal bigman tandems get in each other's way a lot, in a way that makes them both less effective. Not so in New Orleans. It's perfect. Absolutely a perfect fit. Whoever made the bold decision to draft Williamson and then pluck Melli from whatever Euro team he was playing with deserves a raise. In recognition of the beastitude of this rookie pairing, I have created a brand new nickname for them: "Fuoco E Ghiaccio". That means "Fire and Ice" in Italian, a nod to Melli's Italian heritage. Williamson can be the "Fuoco", and Melli can be the "Ghiaccio". Or Melli can be the "Fuoco" and Williamson can be the "Ghiaccio". It doesn't really matter which one is which. All that matters is that one of them is hot and dynamic and the other is suave and cool. Remember, if you choose to use this nickname in any of your works, or even say it out loud, it's 25 dollars per use. I didn't become an expert in the area of nicknamecraft so that uncreative losers could steal my intellectual property without compensation. All clips property of the NBA. Reggie Jackson 23 Points/5 Assists Full Highlights (1/29/2020)
Reggie Jackson 23 Points/5 Assists Full Highlights (1/29/2020)

Reggie Jackson is really making up for all the time that he missed at the beginning of the season. In the four games that he's played in January, he's scored 19 PPG per game. When you account for the fact that he's on some kind of minutes restriction as he works his way back from injury (hence the low minutes, just 23 MPG per game in those four games), the volume of his scoring looks even more nuts. Nutser, if you will. Is there something about being on a minutes restriction that is making Jackson ball out? If anything, I would expect that NOT being on a minutes restriction would induce players to ball out since they would need to play well in order to earn more minutes. Jackson, by definition, CAN'T earn more minutes, so the impetus to play well isn't there, except in an altruistic "I want to help the team win" way. Perhaps I've unfairly underrated Jackson's competitive spirit. Maybe there's a fire burning within him that wants to propel this ho-hum Pistons team to the playoffs. Or maybe he just wants a big new contract either in Detroit or somewhere else, and balling the frick out is the way to earn that contract. Yeah, that's probably the reason. Tristan Thompson 17 Points Full Highlights (1/27/2020)
Tristan Thompson 17 Points Full Highlights (1/27/2020)

Remember when LeBron helped Tristan Thompson get that gigantic contract a few years ago? The one where they shared an agent so the Cavs had to pay Thompson in order to keep LeBron happy? I had been operating under the assumption that Thompson's huge contract was just going to continue forever, with the Cavaliers paying him eighteen million dollars per year until he retires and maybe even a couple years after he retires for good measure. It turns out that Thompson's contract actually does have a built-in end date, and that date is the end of this season. Once the off-season comes around, Thompson's going to have to find a new contract to sign. The team, the amount, and the duration of that contract are all up in the air. I can't even begin to guess what kind of contract he's going to get. Is the "TT era" of the Cavs finally drawing to a close? Or are the Cavs going to re-sign TT to keep the TT era alive? I don't even know. It's hard to tell what the Cavs future plans are because they aren't a free-agent destination, they don't have LeBron, and they don't have a lot of young players who are worth building around. Thompson seems like he fits more on an established playoff team, but there's also the loyalty thing coming into play. Long story short, Thompson should get LeBron to flex his muscles a bit more and score him another max contract. All clips property of the NBA. No copyright infringement is intended. Markelle Fultz 23 Points/1 Dunk Full Highlights (1/18/2020)
Markelle Fultz 23 Points/1 Dunk Full Highlights (1/18/2020)

Markelle Fultz has scaled the first step on the near-infinite staircase to living up to being the number-one overall pick. Examples of some of the steps that appear on this staircase: Step 1: become an acceptable free-throw shooter (this one he's already done) Step 2: become an acceptable three-point shooter Step 3: play effectively off the ball Step 4: master the pick-and-roll ..... Step 56: abandon the team that nurtured you to form a superteam in Miami Step 57: hold an outrageous press event after forming your superteam ..... Step 192: abandon your superteam to go back to the team that nurtured you Step 193: win a championship with your old new team (note to Magic fans: I estimate that Fultz will reach this step around the year 2029, so just be patient). There are more steps after that (I told you this staircase was near-infinite), but the one we're concerned about right now is step 2: becoming an acceptable three-point shooter. Fultz has shown enough to me this year that I think this is the clear next step in his evolution as a player. There's only so far you can go hitting crafty midrange jumpers and finishing even craftier layups. If he can keep having 20-point outings like tonight without a long-ball, that's fine, but those 20-point outings become 30-point outings pretty darn quick if he can chuck from deep like he did in college.
