According to Edmonton Oilers head coach Dave Tippett, centre Jujhar Khaira appears to be all right after getting knocked out Monday in a fight against Calgary Flames forward Brett Ritchie.
We didn't see that one coming. Or maybe we did, in hindsight. The Edmonton Oilers' three-game series with the Toronto Maple Leafs at home in their arena was supposed to be more of a clash of the Canadian titans rather than a complete dismantling by the visitors. The Oilers were coming off 11 wins in their previous 13 games, while the Leafs sat atop the NHL's North Division standings, four points between the two teams. But the Leafs stifled the Oilers' dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisatl in all three games, winning by an aggregate score of 13-1. Only Draisaitl registered a point between them on his team's single goal. NHL beat writer Derek Van Diest joins host Craig Ellingson to discuss why and how the Oilers were so thoroughly defeated.
At 14-10-0 on the season and second place in the North Division, the Edmonton Oilers are still a pretty good team, they just aren’t as good as the Toronto Maple Leafs right now.
Head coach Dave Tippett, forward Jesse Puljujarvi and defenceman Evan Bouchard talk about the Edmonton Oilers' win on Feb. 2, 2021, over the visiting Ottawa Senators.
The Edmonton Oilers, along with their usual Pacific Division mates the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks, have an additional challenge the NHL's other 28 teams don't have: They don't have a farm team located in the same country. Every team in the U.S. has their AHL affiliate in their country, while Canada's four other teams — the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators and the Winnipeg Jets — all have theirs north of the border. In order to bring players up from the U.S. and onto their rosters, the Oilers, Flames and Canucks have to wait 14 days for them to clear COVID-19 quarantine. That could prove to be a handcuff for them if they run into injuries, illnesses and potential COVID cases.
