The Edmonton Oilers, along with their usual Pacific Division mates the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks, have an additional challenge the NHL's other 28 teams don't have: They don't have a farm team located in the same country. Every team in the U.S. has their AHL affiliate in their country, while Canada's four other teams — the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators and the Winnipeg Jets — all have theirs north of the border. In order to bring players up from the U.S. and onto their rosters, the Oilers, Flames and Canucks have to wait 14 days for them to clear COVID-19 quarantine. That could prove to be a handcuff for them if they run into injuries, illnesses and potential COVID cases.
