He left his big guns at home to prepare for Sunday's London derby against West Ham United, but the 11 alterations featured nine internationals with over 200 European games between them. However, Tottenham were outfought and outplayed in the second half when Maximilian Wittek's superb volley with 12 minutes remaining beat Pierluigi Gollini, who could have done better. To finish top in their Europa League Conference Group G, Tottenham may need to win both of their remaining home matches against Vitesse and Rennes, as well as get something away from Mura. Nuno summoned Harry Kane from the substitutes' bench to see off Mura when he had a similar problem in the previous group game. Tonight, Kane was sitting with his feet up, and there was little in the dugout to provide the threat that was missing on the field. Bryan Gil, who looked really good at times but was less at ease on the right wing, fired the first shot from Spurs eight minutes before halftime, which looped on to the underside of the bar and was the closest Spurs got to scoring. Dane Scarlett, 17, should be gaining confidence, but is having a difficult time without any meaningful service. There are more pressing concerns. Nuno has struggled to motivate players who believe they will only be given opportunities to play in this league and not in the Premier League. Having two squads means Harry Winks is out of shape and out of rhythm, and as a result, he underperforms when called upon. It spirals out of control. “It is difficult when you don’t play regularly,” Winks said. “It is hard to match their [Vitesse’s] confidence and energy. They out-thought and dominated us.” Tottenham have yet to find an answer to the Giovani Lo Celso problem. He has received praise for his ingenuity in recent Argentina games, but Nuno does not use him in his favoured attacking midfield spot. After the break, he raced clear from the halfway line and fed Gil, who struck the bar, then slid in Steven Bergwijn, who was crowded out. Dele Alli put up a strong performance in the Premier League's first match victory over Manchester City, but he is lacking in confidence. Bergwijn is out of shape following an injury and has had little influence on his preferred left flank. Nuno made no indication that any of these players would be pounding on his door for a starting spot against West Ham at the weekend. On the eve of the match, Vitesse fans fired off fireworks outside Tottenham's hotel about 4 a.m., with a message that read, "Good morning." For the first time in seven years since Ajax's visit, the stadium was virtually full. With their second win in the competition, the visitors were smooth and confident from start to end, moving to within one point of Group A leaders Paris St-Germain. City had been in command from the start, but it took until the 30th minute for Joao Cancelo to grab on to Phil Foden's wonderful ball and slot it past former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. After being fouled, Mahrez added a second goal from the penalty spot soon before halftime. The third goal came swiftly in the second half, when Mahrez found Kevin de Bruyne, whose one-touch ball sent Kyle Walker through, and the full-back shot into the far corner. Palmer, a 19-year-old academy graduate, scored his team's fourth goal just two minutes after entering the game, curling a superb shot into the net from the edge of the box. For the hosts, Hans Vanaken headed home a late cross, but City scored their fifth goal almost immediately, with Riyad Mahrez bursting through and scoring coolly one-on-one. City's win was the perfect answer to their earlier Champions League defeat at PSG, as they moved to six points from three games. Guardiola had named a strong XI for the trip to Belgium after losing 2-0 at PSG on September 28. He had demonstrated his ambition to bounce back to winning ways in the Champions League immediately by picking a strong XI for the trip. The choice to deploy Foden as a false nine in what was his first start in the competition this season did, however, raise some eyebrows. Foden's manager, Pep Guardiola, has already indicated that finding a position for him will never be a problem because he can play anywhere, and the England international has once again demonstrated his manager's faith in his ability to execute in any situation.
