During Wednesday's Rays-Red Sox game at Fenway Park, umpires reviewed a fly ball, originally ruled an inning-ending out, in right field. As a result, replay overturned the call to a foul ball. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/04/a-pesky-corner-at-fenway-park-fan.html During review, the Replay Official considered two elements: First, did the fan touch the batted (live) ball, and, second, if so, was this spectator interference? Upon review, it was determined the fan did touch the ball, but did not do so illegally or in violation of the spectator interference rule, which would have required the fan to have touched the ball on or over the playing field. Because the fan touched the ball on the spectator area around Pesky's Pole and not over the playing field, the proper call was to consider the ball foul at the moment it touched the fan in dead ball territory, regardless of Arozarena's subsequent catch on the warning track.
During Saturday's Clemson-SCar NCAA baseball game, Tigers baserunner Dylan Brewer was declared out after being awarded second base on a ball four call to the batter. Was the umpire's call correct or should the walk have protected Brewer? Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2021/03/ask-uefl-runner-tagged-out-after-base.html In 2017, a somewhat similar situation occurred at the MLB level in Seattle: None out, runner on first base running on the pitch, and a 3-2 count on the batter. In both situations, the batter took the pitch for ball four and in both situations, the catcher attempted to throw the runner from first base out at second. Official Baseball Rule 5.05(b)(1) comment gives us our answer: "If, in advancing [to an awarded base], the base runner thinks there is a play and he slides past the base before or after touching it he may be put out by the fielder tagging him." In Seattle, baserunner Jean Segura ran past second base, but Astros fielder Jose Altuve failed to actually tag Segura when he was past second base. During the Clemson game, baserunner Brewer slid into second base without liability to be put out—the tag of his helmet was effectively meaningless—but then stepped off the base and, having been deemed past the awarded base, was properly called out when subsequently tagged.
HP Umpire Dan Bellino ejected pitcher Jimmy Cordero after he hit Willson Contreras with a pitch, ejecting manager Rick Renteria and pitching coach Don Cooper shortly thereafter. Ejection report: https://www.closecallsports.com/2020/09/mlb-ejections-79-81-dan-bellino-6-8-cws.html In the all-Chicago series, Contreras previously hit a home run in the game, flipping his bat high in the air afterward. After consultation with the remaining umpires on Chief Angel Hernandez's crew, Bellino ejected Cordero for intentionally pitching at a batter in contravention of the Official Baseball Rules.
Friday's WBSC’s Italy vs South Africa game in Parma ended via a triple play in the 10th inning after a batted ball that should have been ruled a foul ball, but was ruled fair…and was unreviewable via replay. Article: https://www.closecallsports.com/2019/09/perils-of-unreviewable-foul-ball-triple.html In 2017, we first suggested that MLB make more plays reviewable via video and instant replay, and Tmac listed a few specific plays, including the “batted ball hits batter in box” play (OBR [the Olympics uses MLB’s rules book]) 5.09(a)(7) is the governing rule) that was ultimately missed in ITA-RSA game-ending play. Had this play been reviewable, the play would have resulted in a foul ball instead of a triple play. Regardless, this play illustrates the importance of crew consultation. Especially when it concerns a triple play vs foul ball situation like this—a literal game-changing play (going from multiple runners and none out to GAME OVER)—it probably would be helpful for umpires to get together to make every effort to get the play right without replay (seeing as most levels of baseball don’t use video review). Oh, and this play should be reviewable.
