Will Dallas Mavericks star SG Luka Dončić and eight-time All-Star PG Kyrie Irving be the best backcourt in the NBA this season?
DALLAS, TX – The Dallas Mavericks defeat the Suns in American Airlines Center 103-94 on Friday night and take game three in the West Semi-Finals. The series is now 2-1 with the Suns still in the lead. The first quarter started off slow for both teams. The Mavs weren’t hitting any three-pointers but that was their go to every time down the court. Dallas went 0-of-4 from three in the first five minutes before Dallas stepped it up. The Mavs went on a 9-0 run with four minutes remaining in the first quarter giving Dallas a 20-13 lead and it was led by Jalen Brunson. Dallas ended the quarter with a 29-20 lead for Dallas. The first four minutes of play in the second quarter was all defense. Neither team scored until Spencer Dinwiddie had a driving layup with 9:20 left in the quarter. The Mavs continued their lead and it was for two reasons; defense and driving to the basket. The Mavs were 4-of-16 (25%) from three so clearly they were not shooting how they wanted too. They responded with driving to the basket and creating open looks that Dallas has a way higher percentage of converting on. Dallas was also playing lockdown defense. They shut down Booker and Chris Paul in the first half. Booker was held to nine points and Paul was held to seven. Paul had six turnovers with seven minutes left to play in the first half. They forced the Suns to have 12 turnovers in the entire game. Mavs took a 51-44 lead at the half. Doncic led Dallas with 16 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Brunson added 14 points and three rebounds. Dallas did not turn the ball over a single time in the first half. The Mavs did their third quarter thing like usual. They out scored the Suns 31-23 and kept the lead the entire third quarter. Dallas went into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 82-67 lead. Phoenix went on a 5-0 run with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter making the Mavs lead smaller and smaller. Dallas still had a 12 point lead but it forced Jason Kidd to take a timeout. Dallas answered, coming out of the timeout and breaking the run with a made basket by Maxi Kleber. The Suns brought the lead down to nine with four minutes left in the game but Dallas didn’t let them get anymore than that. With 1:01 left in the game the score was 99-91, Dallas had the lead and Reggie Bullock nailed a corner three to make the game 102-91. That shot really put the nail in the coffin for Phoenix. Dallas takes game three in a 103-94 victory. Game four will be at American Airlines Center on Sunday at 2:30 PM. KEY PLAYERS: Luka Doncic had 26 points, 13 rebounds, and 9 assists. Jalen Brunson had 28 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. #DallasMavericks #PhoenixSuns #NBAPlayoffs
DALLAS, TX – The Dallas Mavericks (52-30) defeat the San Antonio Spurs (34-48) in a 130-120 victory in American Airlines Center on Sunday night. What we thought was going to be the final regular season game of the year without Dallas’s favorite, Luka Doncic; we were surprised to find out that late Saturday night the NBA rescinded the 16th technical that Doncic received against the Trail Blazers on Friday night, suspending him from the final game of the season Sunday night. The first quarter got underway and Dallas took a 11-4 lead over the Spurs early. That was short lived as San Antonio fought their way back with a 7-0 run tying the game up at 11 a piece with six minutes remaining in the half. The rest of the quarter was back and forth and the Spurs took a one point lead entering the second quarter. The Spurs had a better mid range shooting percentage in the first quarter than Dallas and they also won the paint. The second half was back and forth for both teams, Doncic had a quiet half (for Doncic these days) and finished with 18 points. The Mavs went into the locker room tied at 59-59 after going on a 8-0 run to finish out the half. The third quarter seems to be a sweet spot for Dallas lately. The Mavs opened the third going on a 15-9 run to take a six point lead with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The lead continued to grow as Doncic and Brunson traded off making three-pointers. Dallas only gave up 23 points in the third quarter out scoring the Spurs 38-23 and taking a 20 point lead into the fourth. Doncic did limp off the court with two minutes left in the third. D210SPORTS was told post game that it was a left calf sprain. It is uncertain at this time how long he will be out for. The good news is Dallas has six days to rest before their first game of the first round of the NBA Playoffs against the Utah Jazz on Saturday afternoon at noon. #LukaDoncic #DallasMavericks #NBA
DALLAS, TX - The Dallas Mavericks (44-28) drops the Minnesota Timberwolves (42-31) in Dallas on Monday night 110-108. This one was down to the wire but the Mavs are good in the final seconds as they have gone 12-2 in super close matchups like the one we had tonight. The first quarter went back and forth for both teams but the Timberwolves won the quarter 29-23. Luka Doncic had a quiet quarter with zero points, which is not like him. The second quarter the Mavs started to find their groove offensively as a team. Luka didn't score until the end of the second quarter and he finished the half with seven. Dwight Powell and Spencer Dinwiddie picked up the pace offensively. Powell ended the half with 16 points and Dinwiddie added 12 points. Dallas outscored Minnesota 37-25 in the second quarter to take a 60-54 lead into the locker room. Jalen Brunson scored a buzzer beater half court shot to end the half but it was ruled a no shot. Dallas had more points in the paint as well as rebounds which is what gave them the seven point lead at the half. The Mavs held a steady five point lead for the remainder of the third quarter. With four minutes left in the fourth Minnesota came back and tied it at 99-99. Timberwolves take a 103-100 lead with 3:23 remaining forcing a Dallas timeout. Dallas comes out the timeout going on a 7-0 run giving them a four point lead with 1:14 remaining in regulation. Karl-Anthony Towns answers with a slam dunk bringing the game within two. Dorian Finney-Smith then brings it home with a three-pointer to boost Dallas back up to a four point lead. This Dallas team played differently then they did their last couple of games. In their matchup against the Hornets Doncic carried all the weight offensively and it resulted in a loss because no team can win off one man alone. In this matchup Doncic had a slower game then he usually does which resulted in his teammates picking up the pace offensively. It forced this Dallas team to have good ball movement and work as a team. The Mavs had 27 assists on the night and shot 48 percent from the floor. As a team Dallas scored 14 three-pointers on the night. All five starters scored in double figures tonight, and the Mavs were led by Dwight Powell and Spencer Dinwiddle. Powell had 22 points and Dinwiddie had 20 points. The Mavs will have an opportunity on Friday to play the Timberwolves again after they host the Houston Rockets on Wednesday here in American Airlines Center at 7:30 PM. #DallasMavericks #MinnesotaTimberwolves #NBA
DALLAS, Texas — SMU fell to Washington State 75-63 in the 2nd round of the National Invitation Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs beat Nicholls in the first round of the tournament and finished 2nd in the American Athletic Conference regular season, with a 24-9 record overall. The Cougars move on to the quarterfinals at 21-14 overall, with wins over Santa Clara and the 1 seed SMU so far in the tournament. The Cougars got up early, playing great defense and not giving the Mustangs uncontested shots. SMU excelled all year shooting 3-pointers but were just 1-7 behind the arc in the 1st half. By halftime, WSU was up 19-points. SMU came out of the break inspired, with new aggressiveness offensively, pushing fast breaks and driving to the basket. SMU Point Guard and AAC Player of the Year, Kendric Davis got loose, which opened things up for the rest of offense. Michael Weathers’ hustle on both ends of the court got the Cougars out of rhythm and played a huge role in getting the Mustangs back in the game. SMU cut WSU’s lead down to 4-points with 3 minutes to go but the Cougars played well down the stretch, breaking the Mustangs’ press and making big shots. Davis ended the day with 30-points, shooting 100% on his 10 free throws. WSU Guard, Michael Flowers led the Cougars with 22-points. The Mustangs won their first 17 home games this season, finishing the year 17-1 in Moody Coliseum. WSU will play in the NIT tournament quarterfinals later this week, game details have yet to be decided. #SMU #WashingtonState #NITTournament

FORT WORTH, TX – TCU (17-8 , 6-7) put their three game losing streak to a halt after defeating West Virginia (12-13, 3-11) 77-67 in Fort Worth on Monday night. We talked about it before the game how rebounding and defense was going to be the key ingredient for TCU tonight and that’s exactly what they did. The Frogs out rebounded the Mountaineers 42-24 and that was the difference maker in tonight’s game. “We out rebound and that’s something we do really well and something we need to keep doing.” Head Coach Jamie Dixon told us post game. Both teams were playing solid offense in the first half. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor and 60 percent from beyond the arc. TCU had some careless turnovers that kept West Virginia in the game. TCU led 43-42 at the half and that was solely because of turnovers. Second half got underway and TCU started to pull away midway through the second half. TCU had great ball movement and penetration to the basket. The Frogs had all five starters score in double figures tonight. “We had good passing, good decision making, good job entering the lane”, Coach Dixon said. The one thing that TCU does need to work on is their turnovers later down the stretch. TCU gave the ball up 16 times in this game and that number will need to come down if they want to compete against some of these harder teams that are coming up. “We just have to cut down on turnovers. We are working on it and we are just going to have to keep working on it.” Coach Dixon explained after the game. Emanuel Miller led the Frogs tonight with 18 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Mike Miles added 15 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Taz Sherman led the way for West Virginia with 23 points, one rebound, and two assists. The Frogs were without Eddie Lampkin tonight. Lampkin got injured last game and decided earlier today that it was best he did not play tonight. Lampkin is a big force for TCU down low but the Frogs knew how to handle it. They took control under the basket, crashed the boards, and got the win. TCU will head to Austin on Wednesday to play no. 20 Texas at 6:00 PM. #TCU #WestVirginia #CollegeBasketball
SMU Upset Nationally Ranked Houston, 85-83 Wednesday night. The nationally televised showdown packed Moody Coliseum, featuring the 1st and 2nd ranked teams in this weeks’ American Athletic Conference standings. UH led almost the entire game, setting up a huge comeback for SMU to defend their now 12-0 undefeated record at home this year. UH leads the AAC, followed by SMU. The Mustangs are 17-5 overall and 8-2 in the American. SMU broke UH’s 12 game win streak, handing the Cougars their first loss in conference play. The Mustangs played hard and shot well in the 1st half but couldn’t keep up with the Cougars big men. Houston established their lead with points in the paint and out rebounding SMU. UH’s lead got up to 15-points before the Mustangs started to chip away at the deficit. SMU’s push began late in the 2nd half, scoring on a fast break kick back to Marcus Weathers for 3, forcing a UH timeout. The statement rocked Moody Coliseum and started a run for the Mustangs that cut the Cougars lead to 2 with 7:42 left. The rest of the game was hard fought. The Mustangs took their 1st lead with 3 and a half minutes to go. With 45 seconds to go the game was tied at 81, Mustang’s ball. Point guard, Kendric Davis went to the line and hit 2 on a defensive blocking call. The Mustangs got a huge stop on the other end of the court, forcing the Cougars to start fouling. SMU scored 36 points on 3-pointers, improving their own league leading average on 3-pointers made per game. Davis came to play as usual, scoring 22 points, with 7 rebounds and 7 assists. The Weathers brothers stepped up in a huge way, Marcus scoring 20-points while Michael added 17-points. The AAC schedules each opponent twice, so these teams will see each other again in Houston on February 27th. Conference play continues through the beginning of March, followed by the AAC Tournament in Fort Worth, March 10th-13th. The Mustangs head on the road, playing at ECU later in the week. #SMU #Houston #CollegeBasketball
