Auburn wrapped up its SEC home slate with a series win against Texas A&M, defeating the Aggies 8-5 in the series finale Sunday at Plainsman Park. The Tigers’ pitching trio of Trace Bright, Joseph Gonzalez and Carson Skipper gave up just two earned runs and didn’t walk a batter while striking out nine. “It was amazing what Trace Bright, Joseph Gonzales, and Carson Skipper did,” head coach Butch Thompson said. “If we had gotten past those guys, we were going to be looking at guys’ third outing since Wednesday. I tip my hat for what these three men did for us today.” The middle of the order led the way from the plate, going a combined 9-for-19 with five runs and five RBI. Kason Howell was one of four players with multiple hits and matched a career high with three RBI. “You have to have a simple approach and look for the fastball,” Howell said. “You can’t be guessing or anything. You just have to react and put your hands where the ball is, hit it hard and see what happens.” Bright opened the game on the mound for the Tigers and gave the team four strong innings, allowing three runs, but just one earned, on six hits. “It was just my job to get out there and give us a chance to win. That’s all I wanted to do,” Bright said. “I wish I could’ve gone a little bit longer, but Joseph did a great job coming in and picking me up.” Leading 7-3, Gonzalez (2-3, 6.37) entered in relief to start the fifth and retired Texas A&M in order. The freshman gave up a tough luck run on a hit batter and a pair of bloop singles in the sixth, and Texas A&M narrowed the lead to two on an unearned run in the eighth. However, Auburn got the run back as Judd Ward laced a ball back at the pitcher to drive in Garrett Farquhar and make it an 8-5 ballgame. Farquhar entered in place of Brody Moore in the second inning and went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI in the game. “He’s taken every rep with these guys in practice, and he’s made the most of his opportunity and helped the ball club this week,” Thompson said of Farquhar. Carson Skipper worked around a one-out single and struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season. The junior righty has earned two wins and a save in his last three outings. Auburn (22-25, 8-19 SEC) wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard with a three-run first inning. The Tigers took advantage of a Texas A&M fielding error to score the first run and added two more as Howell laced a two-run single thru the left side. Texas A&M (28-25, 8-19 SEC) answered with a solo home run to lead off the second inning, but Auburn answered with three more in the home half. The first run came in to score on Texas A&M’s second error of the game before Rankin Woley and Farquhar hit RBI singles to make it a 6-1 ballgame. The Aggies threatened to cut into Auburn’s lead with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the third. However, Bright induced a ground ball and Woley made a nice play at third, stepping on the bag and throwing across the diamond, to get out of the inning unscathed. Texas A&M scored a pair of unearned runs on a throwing error in the fourth, but Auburn responded as Howell followed Cam Hill’s two-out double with his second RBI knock of the game. Both of Hill’s two hits in the games were doubles. Leading 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Auburn threatened to extend its advantage but couldn’t capitalize with the bases loaded and nobody out. Nonetheless, the three-run advantage through seven was more than enough for Gonzalez and Skipper to finish it off.

Auburn got four big innings out of its bullpen en route to defeating Texas A&M, 5-4, in the series opener at Plainsman Park Friday. The combination of Joseph Gonzalez and Carson Skipper faced just three batters over the minimum in the final four innings en route to the win. “That’s the goal,” head coach Butch Thompson said of winning the series opener. “We haven’t hid from it. We’ve advertised it. We’ve told our fans. We’ve told everybody. Nothing is secured, but if you really want to win a series, winning the first one is a huge step.” Leading 4-3, Auburn scored what proved to be the winning insurance run as Ryan Dyal battled back from a 1-2 count to draw a bases-loaded walk and extend the lead to 5-3. Dyal’s run proved to be critical as Texas A&M leadoff hitter Ray Alejo hit a two-out solo homer in the ninth. “This is the SEC, so every one of these games feels exactly the same when we’re playing a tight competitive game,” Thompson added. Skipper (2-2, 4.56 ERA) recorded the final nine outs and earned his second win in as many outings. The junior lefty matched a season high with four strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. “I just want to give my team a chance to win one out and one hitter at a time,” Skipper said. “Just let my guys play behind me and let them swing the sticks like I know they can.” “He picked up where he left off last weekend and gave us a chance,” Thompson added of Skipper. “I thought the eighth inning was good. He threw some really nice breaking balls.” Jack Owen earned his seventh straight start for the Tigers and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Owen allowed three runs on six hits through three innings but retired seven of the last eight batters he faced before giving way to Gonzalez, who pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Rankin Woley got Auburn’s offense started with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, his seventh homer of the season. Woley finished the game with two hits and proved what scored to be the winning run in the eighth after leading off the inning with a single. “The next game is the biggest one for us,” Woley said. “That’s all we can control is the next game, and that’s what we’re looking forward to. We just have to come out here and play baseball.” Texas A&M responded with a run on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly in the second and added two more on a two-run homer in the third to take a 3-1 lead. However, Auburn answered right back with a solo homer from Ryan Bliss is the third, his 12th of the year, and a RBI double from Brody Moore in the fourth to tie the game, 3-3. Bliss came back around with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and lifted a sacrifice fly to left center to give Auburn the lead. An inning later, Dyal drew the aforementioned bases-loaded walk to bring in the winning run.

Auburn scored seven runs in the first three innings and never looked back as the Tigers ultimately defeated No. 20 Georgia, 9-7, to clinch the series Saturday afternoon at Foley Field. “We’ve had similar games, and it’s just nice to finally break through and feel good leaving the park on a game three,” head coach Butch Thompson said. A three-run first, three-run second and one-run third gave Auburn (19-21, 5-16 SEC) a 7-0 lead right out of the gate. Georgia (27-16, 10-11 SEC) cut the deficit to three in the middle innings, but the Tigers held on for the win behind a strong relief outing from Carson Swilling, who recorded the final 10 outs and earned his second save of SEC play. “We had two keys to the ballgame, the first was Carson Swilling,” Thompson added. “We got very stubborn there at the end and were not going to make another move. I thought he was making enough quality pitches and throwing enough strikes. Then our offense, you talk about multiple guys at the top of the lineup with multiple hits. You just have to give it to the entire offense.” “I wanted the ball,” Swilling said. “The team was behind me and the energy was up. It’s always the same game. It’s never going to change. Growing up, I always wanted to be out there, and I’m always going to give it 100 percent.” Eight of Auburn’s nine starters recorded a hit six drove in a run. Five players in Ryan Bliss, Tyler Miller, Rankin Woley, Steven Williams and Bryson Ware turned in multi-hit games. “I’ve said it all year long, we are a really good team,” Woley said. “This conference is not forgiving, and you just have to come out and play every single day. I’m happy we came out here and took care of business this weekend.”
