Gabin had a relatively quiet start to the game and then just came to life when he scored his first try, after that France was in total control of the game and Gabin made sure to capitalize on his opportunities, to which led to him scoring his hat track which is not a common thing to do in a competition like the Six Nations. Gabin has a true fighting spirit to his game where he never gives up, and that goes back to his junior years when he fought his way from adversity to become an eventual starter for Toulon. It's really amazing to read the story about him being the weakest link in his B-Team in his younger years and never giving up, to just keep on improving in the gym and working on his craft to which he ends up being one of the better players in the world. That's what sport is all about!
World Rugby really has to throw out their current framework when dealing with dangerous hits. I have no idea how a hit like this is only yellow card worthy but they have no problem giving a red card for an accidental head on head clash. A hit like this where Josh Adams clearly ignores the ball and actively seeks out Johny Sexton to go in recklessly with his shoulder to hit Sexton with full force when he simply had no right to make the hit. How on earth is this just a yellow card but when two players accidently head clash it's a red card. Does World Rugby even knows how a player can suffer a concussion or are they under the illusion it's only from head to head clashes? Because it really seems that way if you go through their framework. My issue with this incident is this, Jaco Peyper, his TMO and his AR discussed this and came to these conclusions: 1.) It was clear Foul Play 2.) Reckless and Dangerous 3.) Shoulder used with Full Force 4.) Josh Adams could've avoided the hit if he looked at ball If you read that, that is red card worthy. But because the the hit was an inch below his head, it's only a yellow card, despite the hit having the potential to cause serious damage like a concussion. This was a clear cheapshot, there is no other way of saying it. If this was a case where Josh Adams thought Sexton had the ball, I would've much less harsh, but in the replays you clearly see him ignoring the ball and just eyeing Sexton throughout the process to make the cheapshot. He could've pulled out or simply just went for the ball, but he went to make a dirty hit, which is much more dangerous reckless than a accidental head on head clash which they don't mind giving red cards for
I have to start off by saying I actually think Wayne Barnes is a good ref, I might not always agree with his interpretations by usually he's very consistent and that is all you can ask of a ref. However, he had a really bad game in the Bristol Bears vs Sale Sharks game where he was very inconsistent at scrum time. He also didn't award the dominating team at scrum time and there was a few questionable no calls that went against Sale Sharks, who was dominating most of the scrum but didn't get rewarded for their efforts. Some of the blame should also go towards the AR who should've helped Wayne in the situation where he was on the opposite side of the scrum collapses. After the game Alex Sanderson (Sale Sharks Director of Rugby) came out and was rightfully frustrated by some of Wayne's decisions regarding scrum time. After reviewing the game it was clear that Sale Sharks had reason to be angry at how the scrums were officiated, especially since they were clearly dominating most of the scrums.
I don't think there's more to say about Lukhanyo Am at this, is there? The guy has been in tremendous form this last couple of seasons and he's finding ways to get better. Usually it's his defensive work that sets him apart from other players but recently he's being more involved on attack and he's really good at it. He's starting to become the complete centre and has now shown he's able to play at both the inside and outside channel. This was just another case of a Lukhanyo Am Masterclass. He proved to be the difference in the Sharks vs Bulls matchup and the Sharks really needed him to step up in order to break their losing streak against the Bulls. The Sharks are lucky to have him!
What a game that was from France where everything clicked for them. You could see they were going to show up just by watching their anthem, it just showed so much passion from the crowd and I definitely think the energy of the crowd helped them. Then there was Antoine Dupont, Romain Ntamack and Gaël Fickou. They were so good in the game and played a massive role in the victory. Antoine is just cementing the fact that he's the sure favorite to win the Player of The Year Award, he's just so mature despite being so young. He's made for big games. Gaël Fickou is also someone I've always been a fan off, it feels like he's played forever but he's just 27 years old. That just speaks volume of his maturity, it kind off reminds of Eben where he feels a lot more experienced then his age would suggest. His defensive work is just amazing, he's very smart and knows where to be. Romain Ntamack, also had a brilliant game, it was just his night and everything was slow for him and it felt like he had so much time to make decisions and react to a very tense game. The confidence he has to run out of his own goaline and create an attacking opportunity from nothing, speaks volumes of his talent. One thing is for certain, this France team is going to be difficult to stop in the World Cup, they're talented and they play with a lot of physicality. And there crowd is simply amazing!.
Every single time I think I've seen the worst officiating, I get surprised by how bad refereeing and TMO's have become. I heard about this disallowed try incident, but didn't watch the game until now. Boy was I shocked when I saw this one. At first I thought it was a joke. When they started to change the initial the spotlight from double movement to the cleanout of Allan Alaalatoa, that's when I saw one of the worst officiating calls in some time. How on earth can you watch this and say this was a penalty? Then go on further and give him a Yellow card for making a normal clean in the ruck. How on earth can you look at this and say that was a swinging arm? How dumb must you be to come to that conclusion? Marius Jonker should never, ever be able to TMO again. How many mistakes has he made in recent time? Almost every game he seems to find a way to screw up the most basic calls. This was a joke. The let's go to Romain Poite, All I can say is this. Thank god he retired after this game. The sport of rugby will be better with him not being a referee. Lastly I want to commend Michael Hooper for calling him out on a joke of a decision. I have new respect for Hooper, he made it known to Romain that it was an absolute joke of an decision.
Francois Steyn had an amazing game vs Wales last weekend. He has to be right up there as one of the very best players to represent the Springboks. He just seems to become better as he gets older. I was really impressed by his performance at the back and he came onto the field with an attacking mindset and was not afraid to bring the game to Wales. That long distance kick was also impressive but everyone expected that once he made that kick. He might not get as much playing time as he once did, but he makes it count every time he's on the pitch. It's also pretty clear that he plays a massive part in the culture of this team. I'll always be a massive fan of Frans Steyn and what he means to this team.
Hopefully most of you read this, this incident is not to bash the ref. To be honest, I was quite impressed with Paul Williams tonight. He was not too good at the lineouts in the first half but he definitely improved the 2nd half. Overall I think he had a pretty decent performance. I loved how he communicated with both teams and was consistent with his decisions. I might not have agreed with some of his interpretation, but I can commend him for at least communicating clearly how he interpreted the laws so that both teams understood that. However, this was a clear mistake. He is spot on with his reasoning by saying the players needs to retreat, they can't advance or even stand in place. They have to retreat backwards. But my problem is, that it was quite clear that all of the offside player made clear attempts to retreat backwards, not one of them even stood still. All of them retreated backwards. The only players advancing was the 3 onside players as well as Cobus Reinach, who kicked the ball. To me, this was a clear try and the ref should have stayed with his on field decision.
