Under pressure Leeds United 22 year old proved a point

Under pressure Leeds United 22-year-old proved a point. Leeds winger played well in 3-2 win. Leeds United attacker Jack Harrison was lucky to keep his place for the club's last game against Blackburn. Harrison was substituted at half-time against Aston Villa after a woeful performance which saw him touch the ball only 14 times. Against Blackburn he lasted 60 minutes, and had a much more telling impact. Harrison showed more purpose in possession, and forced Leeds' first goal with a dangerous pass which was converted for an own goal by Derrick Anderson. When he was substituted off it was to a round of applause from supporters, with Jack Clarke coming on for the final half an hour. Clarke was outstanding against Villa, but he is five years younger than 22-year-old Harrison and manager Marcelo Bielsa is trying to use him sparingly. Bielsa then needs Harrison to step up and contribute, to make it easier to use Clarke as an impact substitute, rather than rush him into a starting role. The Manchester City youngster proved a point at Leeds yesterday, showing that he can play an important role in their promotion chasing season. He needs to build on it this weekend against Hull if he is selected as a starter again.

T20 Big Bash tips by Richard Mann: Adelaide Strikers v Melbourne Renegades. Richard Mann previews the upcoming matches in the Big Bash with reigning champions Adelaide Strikers back in action. 4pts Adelaide Strikers to beat Melbourne Renegades at 13/18 4pts Hobart Hurricanes to beat Melbourne Stars 17/20 2pts Callum Ferguson top Sydney Thunder batsman at 5/1 Adelaide Strikers v Melbourne Renegades (Dec 23) Reigning champions Adelaide Strikers kicked off this season's Big Bash with a comfortable five-wicket away win against Brisbane Heat and back on home turf, they look a good bet at 13/18 to take down Melbourne Renegades on Sunday morning. The Strikers made Adelaide quite the fortress last year, going unbeaten on their home patch throughout the competition before overpowering Hobart Hurricanes in the final back at the same venue. With the pitch generally flat and true, it takes a good attack to prosper here and the Strikers have one of the best in T20 cricket with Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan leading a bowling unit that also features Peter Siddle and Billy Stanlake. Despite the continued loss of Travis Head due to international duty, the batting remains highly serviceable with the exciting Alex Carey ably supported by Colin Ingram and Jake Weatherald, and they should have too many guns for the Renegades. Minus Aaron Finch and the outgoing Dwayne Bravo, the Renegades look light on star quality this season despite their opening victory over Perth Scorchers. The Renegades bundled out the Scorchers for only 103 but the fact they found themselves reduced to 17-4 in reply is an indication of the frailties that exist in their line-up. The Strikers are a highly-skilled and professional outfit and won't be as forgiving as Perth were, especially in home conditions. Betting at odds-on in T20 cricket can be fraught with danger but there are exceptions and the Strikers rate a good bet here. Hobart Hurricanes v Melbourne Stars (Dec 24) Last season's runners-up Hobart Hurricanes made a winning start when beating Brisbane Heat on Saturday and look serious players again this year. Exciting young batsmen D'Arcy Short and Ben McDermott both showcased their obvious talent in that victory and former - back in home comforts after a frustrating time away from Australia in the last 12 months - looks set for a big few weeks. Short blasted 67 from 52 balls against Brisbane, clearly appreciating pace on the ball on the return to flat, hard Australian pitches having struggled against spin in the IPL and on Australia's recent tour of Dubai. The Hurricanes are 17/20 to complete back-to-back wins on Monday and with Jofra Archer and new recruit Johan Botha giving captain George a potent mix of firepower and control with the ball, they look well worth supporting. The Stars are very much a side in transition and looked well short of the required standard when comfortably beaten by Sydney Thunder in their rain affected game on Friday. With Stars stalwarts Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright now a distant memory, much of the responsibility will fall on the shoulders of captain Glenn Maxwell and he needs a big season if his side are to compete against the big boys. Sydney Thunder v Sydney Sixers (Dec 24) Both Sydney sides made winning starts to the competition and this local derby could easily go either way. I'm again keen to look at the top Sydney Thunder batsman market for a bet with Callum Ferguson, a loser for the column on Friday, afforded another chance at 5/1. Ferguson was a 13/2 chance on that occasion, owing to the fact that many observers would have expected the South Australian to bat below Joe Root in the batting order. Nevertheless, the classy Ferguson came in at number three on Friday following an impressive run of form in the warm-up fixtures that came on the back of a strong Vitality Blast campaign for Worcestershire earlier in the

‘Infuriating at times’: Some Sunderland fans want more from one key player. Josh Maja scored for Sunderland against Bristol Rovers. Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to give their reaction to the performance of Josh Maja against Bristol Rovers at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon. Maja featured for Sunderland in their 2-1 win against Rovers at home in League One. The 19-year-old forward scored in the 49th minute of the match, and it proved to be the winning goal. The youngster has made 18 starts and two substitute appearances in League One for Sunderland so far this season, scoring 12 goals in the process, according to WhoScored. Against Rovers on Saturday afternoon, Maja could have done better in terms of attempts and link-up play, but the youngster scored the all-important winning goal. The win means that Jack Ross’s side are now third in the League One table with 43 points from 20 matches, five points behind leaders Portsmouth, who have played 22 games. Sunderland fans were pleased with the performance of Maja, but some want the 19-year-old forward to add more to his game. Below are some of the best comments on Twitter: My take on the Maja stuff. For me if his hold up play was better Ross would keep him on the field, rarely if we are winning does he play 90 mins and that surely comes down to his work rate. On the other hand he bangs goals what he's there to DO #SAFC Josh Maja’s finishing is mad. As soon as he got the ball in the box there was no doubt he would score. Don’t want to criticise but wish he could do everything else! #safc Models his game around Defoe, easy to tell when you watch him A great comeback for Sunderland today, to beat Bristol Rovers 2-1. Still 3rd though, but with two games in hand... It shows just how important Josh Maja is to the team. We've got to keep hold of him next month... #safc #HawayTheLads We need to get that Maja contract tied up, can’t see why he wouldn’t. If he keeps banging them in, we get promoted, it’s win win. #safc I really hope we don’t lose Maja and Gooch in January. It’ll be similar to last year when we lost Grabben, love or hate him, we struggled for goals in the second part of last season and look what happened Josh Maja has a few holes in his game which could improve like but he’s class for us at this level. I hope he stays and turns into the striker he has the potential to be #SAFC josh maja keeps getting better and better each game #SAFC McGeady & Maja are both infuriating at times but can’t complain with their contribution this season - 19 goals between them and think that puts McGeady on 5 assists now?! https://t.co/BRGEDRowOA

Sheffield United 1 2 West Brom Kieran Gibbs strikes the winner as Baggies move up to third

Sheffield United 1-2 West Brom: Kieran Gibbs strikes the winner as Baggies move up to third. West Brom came from behind to win 2-1 at Sheffield United and climb above their opponents into third in the Sky Bet Championship table. David McGoldrick put the home side ahead but Albion equalised late in the first half through Gareth Barry before Kieran Gibbs struck the winner with 14 minutes left. Victory extended Darren Moore's side's unbeaten run to six games and left the Blades without a win in their last three home fixtures. The hosts pressed early on and Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was called into action to tip Mark Duffy's cross behind. Poor distribution from Johnstone then presented United with a chance as Oliver Norwood intercepted the ball and played in McGoldrick, who was denied by the keeper. The opening goal came in the 12th minute when Chris Basham found Duffy and his incisive ball allowed McGoldrick to evade his marker and fire past the advancing Johnstone. The chances continued to come for the hosts, with Duffy's deflected low shot being saved by Johnstone at his near post before McGoldrick sent over a cross which was just too high for Norwood. At the other end, Albion won a free-kick around 30 yards which was taken by Harvey Barnes, who curled his effort wide of Dean Henderson's right-hand post. It was the home side who continued to dominate, however, with skipper Billy Sharp the next to threaten as he saw his shot from inside the area charged down. Jack O'Connell then sent over a low cross which was deflected across the face of goal, with no-one there to apply the finish. Albion equalised in the 41st minute when Barnes broke free down the left, advanced to the byline and pulled the ball back to former England international Barry, who fired high into the net from 12 yards. Buoyed by the goal, Albion threatened to score again when Matt Phillips forced a save from Henderson. Shortly before the break, Sharp fired in a shot from the left-hand side of the area which hit the side-netting. The opening chance of the second half fell to Albion's Jay Rodriguez, who headed over after meeting a cross from Phillips, before John Fleck put a low shot wide at the other end of the pitch. The visitors had a great chance to go in front when they caught United on the break and Barnes was put through on goal, but Henderson deflected his effort over the crossbar. McGoldrick put a header off target and Rodriguez sliced his effort wide before Albion took the lead. The goal came when Phillips showed tenacity on the right wing to hold off his marker before crossing to Barnes, who back-heeled the ball into the path of Gibbs and he fired low into the far corner of the net. Sharp shot over from the edge of the area as the hosts looked to get back on level terms. Conor Washington was sent on in place of Duffy to add some extra spark up front but Wilder's men never seriously threatened to draw level as they went down to their third home defeat of the season.

Manchester Utd v Arsenal moments: Keown v Ruud; Pizzagate; Wenger in the stands. We take a look at the memorable clashes between these two giants of English football as they collide yet again at Old Trafford on Wednesday. There is no doubt that there has been a shift in the success pendulum between these two this season. Manchester United finished second last season, while Arsenal failed to make the top four, coming up in sixth. However since Unai Emery has taken charge of Arsenal things have changed. The London club are currently enjoying a 12-match unbeaten run, occupying fourth in the Premier League table and sitting eight points above Wednesday night's opponents, in the process. Mourinho's men are without a win in three, sharing the spoils in their last two fixtures against Crystal Palace and Southampton respectively, which has left United in seventh. With Mourinho under pressure and Emery keen to keep the gap with the leaders as close as possible, there is plenty to play for on Wednesday night. So let's delve into the recent history of Manchester United versus Arsenal and pick out five famous affairs between the two. Returning to the present, Arsenal will move 11 points clear of Manchester United with victory at Old Trafford, while the Red Devils could rejuvenate their form and a top-four charge with a win against Emery's Arsenal. Watch the contest live on Sky Sports, from 1900 GMT on Wednesday.

England beat Sri Lanka in second Test to seal series win

England beat Sri Lanka in second Test to seal series win. England have completed a first series victory in Sri Lanka for 17 years, wrapping up the second Test by 57 runs on the final morning in Kandy. The tourists, whose previous win on these shores came in 2001, needed just half-an-hour on day five to dismiss Sri Lanka for 243 - taking the last three wickets for 17 runs. Moeen Ali claimed the key scalp of Niroshan Dickwella for 35, then clean bowled Suranga Lakmal for duck before Jack Leach ended things with a caught and bowled to see off last man Malinda Pushpakumara and bag his maiden five-wicket haul. England take a 2-0 lead into the final match in Colombo, eyeing a historic clean sweep. Beating Sri Lanka is not quite the scalp it was in the days of Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene but this still represents a considerable achievement given they have lost only one of the previous six series on home soil and recently thrashed South Africa. Leach wins it for England! What a moment for the spinner - a wicket that wrapped up the match, the series and completed his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket!https://t.co/VWIwlU3SAO https://t.co/xLW5pZOmoz It also represents England's first away triumph since they defeated the Proteas in 2015/16, and a first with Joe Root at the helm. Root's side had arrived at Pallekele Stadium as favourites to finish the job, with two late wickets on day four swinging the momentum sharply in their direction after Angelo Mathews' fightback. Home hopes laid squarely with Dickwella, a talented ball-striker more suited to a blaze of glory than a meticulous chase. He played against type as he and Akila Dananjaya knuckled down for almost five overs, working singles to chalk off 14 from their target. There was nothing to alarm England beyond the batsmen's steady mindset and enough turn for both their left and right-arm finger spinners to work with. Had they had to wait much longer, the tension would surely have begun ratcheting up, but Moeen hit the jackpot with the first ball of his third over. He tossed one up to tempt Dickwella and ripped it just enough to take the edge and sail safely to Ben Stokes at slip. Dickwella pivoted angrily on his heel and gestured towards the stumps with his bat, knowing he had left too much for the tail to do. Moeen wasted no time in besting Lakmal, a big lbw appeal first up and then pegging back off stump as the next ball straightened from around the wicket. He finished with four for 72, with left-armer Leach drawing things to a close by pouching the simplest of return catches from Pushpakumara. That saw him close on five for 83 and also ensured a record 38 of the 40 wickets to fall in the match had been taken by spinners. Lakmal's dismissal of Keaton Jennings on the first morning was the seamer's only scalp, with Stokes chiming in with a first-innings run out. According to data analysts CricViz, the last time no English seamer took a wicket in a match was in Karachi in 1973.

Croatia beat Spain 3-2 to set up England showdown. Tin Jedvaj's stoppage-time strike earned Croatia a thrilling 3-2 victory over Spain in Zagreb to set up a winner takes all Nations League clash with England. Victory at Wembley on Sunday will earn Croatia a place in the inaugural finals of the tournament after the World Cup runners-up responded from two Spain equalisers. Andrej Kramaric put Croatia in front after 54 minutes, but Spain levelled through Dani Ceballos within two minutes. Jedvaj restored the lead, only for Sergio Ramos to convert from the penalty spot after 77 minutes when Sime Vrsaljko was ruled to have handled in the area. Both sides sought a winner, but it was Jedvaj who netted three minutes into added time for Croatia to move on to four points, alongside England and two behind Spain. Spain won the reverse fixture 6-0 in Elche in September and a goalless draw with England last month meant Croatia were still seeking their first goal of the competition. That almost changed after just six minutes when Ivan Rakitic released Ivan Perisic down the left. Perisic cut in on to his right foot and hit a low shot which David de Gea turned on to the post. Next Perisic fizzed a cross towards Kramaric, but the striker could not get a decisive touch to send it goalwards. 😲 Croatia beat Spain in the Nations League tonight!⚽️ Now there's a lot on the line when England face Croatia on Sunday...🤞England win: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 win group, 🇭🇷 relegatedCroatia win: 🇭🇷 1st, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 relegated0-0 draw: 🇪🇸 1st, 🇭🇷 relegated Score draw: 🇪🇸 1st, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 relegated pic.twitter.com/9c7PufeHvI Spain were second best. Isco shot from the edge of the area, but Lovre Kalinic made a comfortable save to turn the ball over. Croatia capitalised on poor Spanish defending nine minutes into the second half. Ramos put Sergi Roberto under unnecessary pressure on Spain's right flank and the Barcelona right-back's lofted pass was intercepted by Perisic. His header forwards fell kindly for Kramaric and the striker kept his composure to finish well. The lead did not last long. Iago Aspas fed Isco in the left side of the box and the Real Madrid playmaker centred for Caballos, who showed desire to turn the ball in. Rakitic tore through the Spain defence only to blast wide before the visitors spurned a chance to take the lead. Kalinic lost Roberto's cross and Aspas lifted the ball on to the top of the crossbar from close range. Frantic defending saw Isco thwarted after fine interplay with Caballos. Marco Asensio next had an effort blocked. Having absorbed the pressure, it was Croatia who scored next when Luka Modric's pin-point cross was converted at the back post by Jedvaj. Ante Rebic had an effort stopped by De Gea, who saved with his legs. Alvaro Morata was next to be denied. Kalinic saved Isco's shot up into the air and Morata tried to send the rebound goalwards only for Vrsaljko to clear on the line. Within moments, Spain had a penalty when Vrsaljko was adjudged to handled and Ramos scored. The attacks continued, with Kramaric running at Spain. But he opted to shoot, rather than free Perisic. There was still time for Croatia and substitute Josip Brekalo made space for a shot which De Gea saved, but only as far as Jedvaj, who netted to spark celebrations. Michy Batshuayi fired Belgium to the brink of the finals with his brace in a 2-0 home victory over Iceland. The Chelsea striker, on loan at Valencia this season, tucked Thomas Meunier's pass away after the hour mark before making the three points safe in the last 10 minutes. However, Switzerland can still take top spot by beating the Red Devils in Lucerne on Sunday. Austria's goalless draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Vienna had the effect of promoting the Balkan nation and relegating
