Iraq or ; Arabic: اَلْعِرَاق, al-ʿirāq; Kurdish: عێراق Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جُمْهُورِيَّة ٱلْعِرَاقِ Jumhūriyyah al-ʿIrāq; Kurdish: کۆماری عێراق Komarî Êraq), is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest and Syria to the west. Iraq War
The Iraq War was a protracted armed conflict that began in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition that overthrew the government of Saddam Hussein. The conflict continued for much of the next decade as an insurgency emerged to oppose the occupying forces and the post-invasion Iraqi government.

An insurgency began in Iraq after the 2003 US-led invasion, and lasted throughout the ensuing Iraq War . The first phase of the insurgency began shortly after the 2003 invasion and prior to the establishment of the new Iraqi government.
Iran–Iraq War
The Iran–Iraq War (Arabic: حرب الخليج الأولى) began on 22 September 1980, when Iraq invaded Iran, and it ended on 20 August 1988, when Iran accepted the UN-brokered ceasefire. Iraq wanted to replace Iran as the dominant Persian Gulf state, and was worried the 1979 Iranian Revolution would lead Iraq's Shi'ite majority to rebel against the Ba'athist government.
Iraqi Kurdistan
Iraqi Kurdistan or Southern Kurdistan is the Kurdish-populated region incorporated into Iraq and considered by Kurds as one of the four parts of Greater Kurdistan. Much of the geographical and cultural region of Iraqi Kurdistan is governed by the Kurdistan Region (KRI) (Kurdish: ههرێمی کوردستان, Herêma Kurdistan) which is an autonomous region recognized by the Iraqi constitution.
Iraq and weapons of mass destruction
Iraq actively researched and later employed weapons of mass destruction from 1962 to 1991, when it destroyed its chemical weapons stockpile and halted its biological and nuclear weapon programs as required by the United Nations Security Council. The fifth President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, was internationally condemned for his use of chemical weapons during the 1980s campaign against Iranian and Kurdish civilians during and after the Iran–Iraq War.

The Iraqi Turkmen , also referred to as Iraqi Turks or Turks of Iraq (Arabic: تركمان العراق; Turkish: Irak Türkleri), are Iraqis of Turkic origin who mostly adhere to a Turkish heritage and identity. Most Iraqi Turkmen are the descendants of the Ottoman soldiers, traders and civil servants who were brought into Iraq from Anatolia during the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
Iraq War troop surge of 2007
In the context of the Iraq War, the surge refers to United States President George W. Bush's 2007 increase in the number of American troops in order to provide security to Baghdad and Al Anbar Governorate.The surge was developed under the working title "The New Way Forward" and was announced in January 2007 by Bush during a television speech. Bush ordered the deployment of more than 20,000 soldiers into Iraq , and sent the majority of them into Baghdad.
