У 1990 році, поки M3 та 190E рубились на поворотах, Audi виставила на старт... свій флагманський, представницький седан. **Audi V8**. У паддоку спочатку сміялися. Вони вивели *лімузин* на гонку спорт-купе. Але сміх припинився на першому ж старті. Цей автомобіль мав дві переваги, які конкуренти вважали абсолютно "нечесними". По-перше, під капотом був не маленький 4-циліндровий, а солідний 4.2-літровий **двигун V8**. Хоча в гонках він крутився так само високо, як і конкуренти, його головна перевага була не в цьому. 4-циліндрові M3 та 190E мали *завжди* бути на піку 8,000-9,000 обертів, щоб видавати потужність. Audi V8 мав **крутний момент**. Завжди і всюди. Це давало йому величезну перевагу на виходах з повільних поворотів. По-друге, і це було головне, — повний привід, кожне колесо приводилося в рух легендарною системою **quattrо**. BMW та Mercedes подали офіційний протест.
