Highlights from Saturday afternoon's Breedon Highland League match between Fort William and Lossiemouth, with the match being played at Grant Park due to Claggan Park being unplayable. Many thanks to Highland Sports Media.
It's not a stretch to say that Enes Kanter won this game for the Blazers with his inextinguishible desire to grab rebounds, particularly of the offensive variety. While Lameian Brickard and C.J. McChuckBrick were missing shots, Kanter just walked right in there to clean things up for them. Some clutch O-boards at the end + clutch driving flip shot with eleven seconds to go = an overall clutch performance from a guy about whom Billy Donovan famously found unplayable (him mouthing "Can't play Kanter" to an assistant is still one of the funnier lipreads from a coach in recent memory, behind Kidd's immortal "hit me"). Somehow, Kanter is always in position for the rebound. It's like he's impossible to box out. You can try to get a body on him to keep him off the boards, but then he'll magically teleport in front of you to get superior positioning, or he'll just time his jump so well that it doesn't matter whether you boxed him or not, because he knows when to jump and you don't. He's perpetually one of the best rebounders in the league, but I don't even know how he does it, other than he uses his Turkish powers of, uh, power to overpower the wimps who are trying to stop him from rebounding the ball. Concerns that the Blazers wouldn't be able to take on the Thunder without Jusuf Nurkic are so far proven to be unfounded. Sure, the Thunder were ridiculously cold shooting the ball, but that was only because they were so demoralized by Kanter's domination of the boards. All clips property of the NBA. Match highlights from our recent match against Rothes F.C at Harlaw Park in the Press & Journal Highland League. Match Report - The P&J SHFL Inverurie Loco Works 6 Rothes 0 Sat Dec 3rd 2016 Locos: Booth Jeffrey McLean Souter (Forsyth) Anderson Broadhurst Leyden (Selfridge) Laing McCabe Bavidge (Mackie) Charlesworth Unused subs Crisp Donaldson Willox Mathieson Rothes: Smith McDonald (McIntosh) Davidson Cooke Sharp Stables Stuart Main (Johnston) MacMillan McLaren (Henderson) Gauld Unused subs McNamara Riddoch Referee – Alex Shepherd Match Stats – Locos first. Shots on 13-2, shots off 12-0, Fouls 12-15, Corners 12-0, Offside 8-0, Yellows 1-1, Reds 0-1. Inverurie Locos, fresh from their splendid Aberdeenshire Shield triumph, returned to winning ways in the league on Saturday with a resounding 6-0 win over Rothes. Keeper Ryan Booth, on loan from Dundee United, took his Locos first team bow & notched up a debut clean sheet. Connor Rennie & Ryan Broadhurst had been involved in a somewhat obvious case of mistaken identity at Spain Park seven days earlier, that saw the match referee invite the wrong player to leave the park & so Broadhurst took his usual berth with Rennie serving a one match ban. Stephen Jeffrey started his first match since mid October, with Martin Bavidge also starting as Andy Hunter was injured. Speed merchant Colin Charlesworth also took a starting berth with Dean Donaldson dropping to the bench. Man in the middle Shepherd was at Harlaw for the first time since the opening day. Locos were attacking the Harlaw Road end in the first period. Popular young keeper Booth made a nice confident field early doors from a driven low cross. Leyden & McCabe tested trialist keeper Smith. Ross Anderson, fresh from his final brace, thought he’d opened the scoring but the ‘goal’ was chalked off. James McLaren of Rothes raced forward on twelve minutes to fire the ball into the hands of Booth. Laing, McLean & Souter had efforts blocked or saved as the pressure mounted, before McCabe picked up a yellow card for dissent, a caution that will see him miss the visit of Lossiemouth. Locos continued their flurry of opportunities with Bavidge, Charlesworth & McLean all going close. Ryan Stuart received a caution for diving which looked harsh in the extreme on first viewing & it would go on to become crucial. The stubborn resistance of the Speysiders finally ended on thirty four minutes with veteran BAVIDGE netting a neat glancing header from a whipped McLean cross. Three minutes later CHARLESWORTH made it 2-0 with a calm back stick header from a Leyden cross. Rothes kept it at 2-0 as the half time whistle blew. After the break McCabe tried his luck from distance before Kelvin Main rasped a drive right into the arms of Booth. McCabe was having a fine match and again tested the keeper. Leyden then flighted a free-kick towards the top corner forcing a Smith save. BAVIDGE made it 3-0 on fifty seven minutes & again the assist belonged to Leyden who was unplayable at times. His low centre was properly blootered into the net by the onrushing forward. Stables then picked up a yellow. Bavidge had a hat-trick on his radar and his twenty yard drive was only just too high. On sixty two minutes MCCABE got the goal his all-round performance merited & what a goal it was. The young man opened his body up and bent a curled controlled drive high into the net. Two minutes later JEFFREY made it a nap hand with a close range finish, his second goal of the campaign. A triple substitution saw Leyden, Bavidge & Souter go off, with Forsyth, Selfridge & Dons legend Mackie take to the field. This was Mackie’s first appearance for the Locos. The scoring was complete on seventy one minutes & it was arguably the goal of the game, captain MCLEAN weaving, bobbing & feigning his way through bodies before expertly despatching the ball into the net. Charlesworth & Broadhurst each had a pair of chances to again trouble the scoreboard. Ryan Stuart saw red at the game’s death with his second yellow seeing him ‘upgrade’ to a red. Full time arrived soon after, 6-0. The win saw Inverurie move in to the top half of the table for the first time since the last weekend in July. The calendar year of 2016 has not been kind to Loco Works, with only fourteen victories recorded, but hopefully the Shield success & a fine run of form since visiting Kynoch Park can see the side continue to climb the table. It’s the Old Farm derby at The Haughs this Saturday (10th), a fixture that has only seen the Locos record one loss. BE THE EARLIEST WITH THE LATEST!
