Inverurie Locos, fresh from their splendid Aberdeenshire Shield triumph, returned to winning ways in the league on Saturday with a resounding 6-0 win over Rothes. Keeper Ryan Booth, on loan from Dundee United, took his Locos first team bow & notched up a debut clean sheet. Connor Rennie & Ryan Broadhurst had been involved in a somewhat obvious case of mistaken identity at Spain Park seven days earlier, that saw the match referee invite the wrong player to leave the park & so Broadhurst took his usual berth with Rennie serving a one match ban. Stephen Jeffrey started his first match since mid October, with Martin Bavidge also starting as Andy Hunter was injured. Speed merchant Colin Charlesworth also took a starting berth with Dean Donaldson dropping to the bench. Man in the middle Shepherd was at Harlaw for the first time since the opening day. Locos were attacking the Harlaw Road end in the first period. Popular young keeper Booth made a nice confident field early doors from a driven low cross. Leyden & McCabe tested trialist keeper Smith. Ross Anderson, fresh from his final brace, thought he’d opened the scoring but the ‘goal’ was chalked off. James McLaren of Rothes raced forward on twelve minutes to fire the ball into the hands of Booth. Laing, McLean & Souter had efforts blocked or saved as the pressure mounted, before McCabe picked up a yellow card for dissent, a caution that will see him miss the visit of Lossiemouth. Locos continued their flurry of opportunities with Bavidge, Charlesworth & McLean all going close. Ryan Stuart received a caution for diving which looked harsh in the extreme on first viewing & it would go on to become crucial. The stubborn resistance of the Speysiders finally ended on thirty four minutes with veteran BAVIDGE netting a neat glancing header from a whipped McLean cross. Three minutes later CHARLESWORTH made it 2-0 with a calm back stick header from a Leyden cross. Rothes kept it at 2-0 as the half time whistle blew. After the break McCabe tried his luck from distance before Kelvin Main rasped a drive right into the arms of Booth. McCabe was having a fine match and again tested the keeper. Leyden then flighted a free-kick towards the top corner forcing a Smith save. BAVIDGE made it 3-0 on fifty seven minutes & again the assist belonged to Leyden who was unplayable at times. His low centre was properly blootered into the net by the onrushing forward. Stables then picked up a yellow. Bavidge had a hat-trick on his radar and his twenty yard drive was only just too high. On sixty two minutes MCCABE got the goal his all-round performance merited & what a goal it was. The young man opened his body up and bent a curled controlled drive high into the net. Two minutes later JEFFREY made it a nap hand with a close range finish, his second goal of the campaign. A triple substitution saw Leyden, Bavidge & Souter go off, with Forsyth, Selfridge & Dons legend Mackie take to the field. This was Mackie’s first appearance for the Locos. The scoring was complete on seventy one minutes & it was arguably the goal of the game, captain MCLEAN weaving, bobbing & feigning his way through bodies before expertly despatching the ball into the net. Charlesworth & Broadhurst each had a pair of chances to again trouble the scoreboard. Ryan Stuart saw red at the game’s death with his second yellow seeing him ‘upgrade’ to a red. Full time arrived soon after, 6-0. The win saw Inverurie move in to the top half of the table for the first time since the last weekend in July. The calendar year of 2016 has not been kind to Loco Works, with only fourteen victories recorded, but hopefully the Shield success & a fine run of form since visiting Kynoch Park can see the side continue to climb the table. It’s the Old Farm derby at The Haughs this Saturday (10th), a fixture that has only seen the Locos record one loss. BE THE EARLIEST WITH THE LATEST! Inverurie Locos & Rothes fought out a thoroughly entertaining & largely high quality draw under the Harlaw Park lights. A goal of the utmost skill from Rob Ward was cancelled out by a header from Fraser Robertson. Breedon Highland League. Inverurie Locos 1 Rothes 1 Match Stats. Shots ON 5-6, Shots OFF 9-3, Fouls 14-9, Corners 5-4, Offside 3-3, Yellows 1-2. Locos – A Reid Mitchell Dingwall Souter Broadhurst Ward McLean Shanks (Gauld) Still Gill (Robertson) Meres (McGowan). Unused subs-Hunter Michie Adams Cook Rothes – McCarthy Stark Finnis Johnstone Milne Robertson Gunn Pollock Morrison Cormack A MacKenzie. Subs-Harkness McRitchie Niel Davies I Mackenzie New Locos manager Richie Hastings was watching on from the Main Stand with interim gaffer Steven Park controlling things from the technical area. Gary McGowan had been captured just ahead of the fixture from Banks o’ Dee & was on the bench. The injured Sam Burnett was replaced by Ross Still in the starting line up. Rothes arrived in the Aberdeenshire capital fresh from a comprehensive win over Buckie Thistle. The man in the middle was Filippo Mazzoni, taking care of his first Locos fixture since matchday one of the previous campaign. This one kicked off in dreich drizzle, with Locos attacking the Harlaw Road end. Dingwall strode forward with bis swerving shot clearing the bar. Still & MacKenzie had efforts caught by their opposing goalies with McCarthy then swiftly off his line with Souter sneaking in on the blindside. A Cormack shot was easily caught but this tussle was ignited by a goal fit to grace any stadium in the world. Rob WARD made space for himself before rasping in a crackerjack that was made all the more spectacular by kissing the woodwork on it’s route to swishing the onion bag. What a lovely, lovely goal by the Locos top scorer. Meres saw McCarthy show nice glovemanship next as a driven low ball was gathered. Andy Reid denied a near certain Cormack goal with a top point blank save. Shanks was working like a beaver & had a low shot held, with a Johnstone pass nearly ending up in his own net. A Locos chance was then cleared from below the bar, with loud appeals for the ball having crossed the line, with Dingwall’s rebound driven into the ground & skipping up & over. Ward marauded forward & lashed a thirty yarder wide. Locos had been the better of two good sides & the 1-0 half-time score was fair. Ward caused havoc at the beginning of the second period & played in Shanks for a pop at goal. Rothes levelled next with Fraser ROBERTSON heading home a rebound after a Locos error gifted Rothes possession. Allan Pollock fired over & had a quick free kick go wide, whilst Dingwall had another effort fly over the crossbar with Ward shooting into the sidenet. Keeper McCarthy dropped the football under no pressure but was able to compose himself & retrieve it before Locos capitalize. McGowan came on for his debut & impressed in this Harlaw cameo. Sub Gauld had an effort deflect wide & Still had a header go wide. Morrison’s late shot was easily fielded by Reid & the Mazzoni whistle confirmed that Locos had played out their one hundredth draw in senior soccer. Locos had created more than the visitors but Rothes had more significant possession & possibly just edged proceedings in general open play. Therefore the share of the spoils had a reasonable & logical feel to it. The number four was to the fore at full time. Locos in fourth, four points off the lead & one of only four teams left unbeaten. It’s an away day at Bellslea next against the strongest side thus far, with their second half performance in the cup final perhaps the best football observed in this campaign.
