Apart from one podium, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has had a pretty forgettable season so far. This has ignited the “car vs driver” debate and Hamilton’s former teammate and current Alpine driver Fernando Alonso has weighed in as quoted by Racing News 365 Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxxjuCW3viNY3RCo7RC_p-WzSGnsAqeOH8 0:00 - Lewis Used To Win Because He Had “Fastest Car” – Alonso 1:04 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Lewis Used To Win Because He Had “Fastest Car” – Alonso Alonso began by explaining his thoughts on the car vs driver debate “It’s Formula 1. It has been like this always” “When [Ayrton] Senna won the championships and the races, he had the fastest car. When I won the championship, I had the fastest car. Michael [Schumacher] had the fastest car” He then spoke specifically about Lewis “Lewis broke all the records and pole positions because he had the fastest car” “Today, Lewis is driving super well and [yet] he’s P13. It’s Formula 1” He signed off by responding to whether racing has improved for him “There is no race at the moment. It is like fighting with Lewis last year, or Verstappen. They start last and they finished on the podium still, so there is not much to fight” Fast Feed For Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz “the difficult thing is that [the poor results] come one after the other” [Soy Motor] “It hurts more, but hopefully we have put this behind us in the first part of the season” Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' Trackside Engineering Director has explained that “realistically, [they] have to look at this step by step” [Official Statement] “However, we are seeing encouraging signs and hope to bring updates soon” “Perhaps even in Miami, that will further solve this problem” Retired F1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi stated that “if you compare Mercedes to McLaren, they both have the same engine” [Vegas Insider] “But McLaren is running much faster than Mercedes. That means it’s not the engine, but also the chassis” Alfa Romeo team principal Fred Vasseur pointed out that “when you are designing a racing car the weight is always the target number one” [Motorsport] “Nobody can be surprised with the weight at the last minute” “I think that some teams played a game with the FIA expecting that the FIA at the last minute would increase the minimum weight [even more]” AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly suggested that they “need to go away and work out how to get back to a stronger qualifying performance for the next race” [F1] Red Bull team principal Christian Horner revealed that “tyres are a big issue” “In Imola we managed to bring them into the best working window, in Australia we had a hard time with that” “Leclerc had more tyre problems in Italy than we did and that tipped the scales in our favor” Can you only win championships in Formula 1 if you have the best car?

Awful pace, a car that was apparently ‘very very difficult to drive’ and a P14 and P15 for the two drivers. And that would have been P18 and 19 if the three Red Bull engines had held together. But they’ve had one hell of a resurgence, with Lando getting a podium in Imola and some strong results in Australia. So what have they changed for the Emilia Romagna GP? And where are they going from here? Well, this story with the McLaren starts in Bahrain - where we were all wondering if the McLarens were going to be the backmarkers for this year. They only beat Latifi and Hulk (in a car he had never driven before) - and yes the Red Bulls and Gasly who all DNF’d. If you look at Qualifying, their delta to the fastest cars in Qualifying was about a second and a half. Then, looking at race pace - the delta was a little bigger. Now, this is harder to tell in the race, with traffic, degrading tyres and the list goes on. But you can see that the McLaren is consistently a way off the pace. Lando said - ‘We don’t really have a good enough car to do better’ and explained that he had to push really hard just to keep up at the beginning, only then to deg the tyres and fall off the pack altogether. ➤Follow Driver61 on: ➤ Instagram- @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta ➤TikTok - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61TikTok ➤ Follow Scott on: ➤ Twitter - https://twitter.com/scottkmansell ➤ Instagram - @official_driver61 - https://bit.ly/D61Insta #Formula1 #McLaren #Driver61
From the pole, and with fastest lap along the way, Red Bull's Max Verstappen dominated the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola on Sunday. And, this time, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc never had a look in. Adrian Newey's RB18 was superior to the F1-75 in every department - and in the closing laps, to cap it all, while pushing hard on a new set of soft tyres, Charles Leclerc spun from P3 to P6. With Carlos Sainz being nudged out of the race on the first lap, first chicane, it was a day that the packed Imola crowd will want to semi-forget - particularly as Sergio Perez underlined the RB18's pace with a very strong run into P2. Lando Norris finished an excellent P3 for McLaren; George Russell withstood late-race pressure from Alfa's Valtteri Bottas to finish P4 for Mercedes - but Lewis Hamilton, who finished P13, was never in the running even for a point. The Saturday sprint F1 race at Imola looked to be another demonstration of unabashed superiority by Charles Leclerc and Ferrari...until the right-front Pirelli on the F1-75 began to grain and thus to lose grip. Then Max Verstappen, the tyres on his Red Bull RB18 working perfectly, closed in for the kill. In this video, at 06:20, Peter Windsor offers a suggestion as to why there was such a difference in late-race tyre performance between the two cars. Calling on data from FP2 at Imola this morning, Peter also looks ahead to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola on Sunday, when the protagonists will also be using harder Pirelli compounds. (Even so, the soft tyre still looks to be very raceable off the line, even with a higher fuel load.) Peter also analyses another disappointing day for Mercedes; a strong result for McLaren-Mercedes and Alfa Romeo; and the impressive drive by Haas' Mick Schumacher. They’re quick on the straights, and through the slow corners and, over a lap, nobody can touch them. They seem to have solved the Porpoising issues, been able to adapt their car for the three (very different) circuits we’ve had so far, and been quick on every tyre they’ve run. But on top of that, they have been leveraging a couple of key advantages (and doing it very well). Let's get into it. 🔧 Thanks to Scarbs for joining us once again! Go follow him on Twitter for F1 Tech news! https://twitter.com/ScarbsTech The first thing to bear in mind is that Ferrari rocked up to the first test with a strong car. A very defined concept that they have been running ever since, they have made very few changes to it. And those little changes have all been for track-specific reasons. Whereas if you look at Mercedes, Red Bull (or any of the other teams for that matter), they have been making component upgrades, vast setup changes and different concepts on each of their cars. If you look back at Lewis and George’s cars in Jeddah, the cars were set up very differently. (And Lewis made sure we knew it) Whereas Ferrari have stuck to its original plan, and it paid off. They have been learning their car inside out, gaining valuable experience with it - without the disruption of big setup or performance changes.
