Two of the most dynamic personalities will square off on Saturday, August 22, live on DAZN PPV and Prime Video when Rolly Romero puts the WBA welterweight title at stake against former two-division world champion Teofimo Lopez from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) last competed in May 2025 when he knocked down and defeated Ryan Garcia to win the WBA (regular) welterweight belt at Times Square in New York City. He got elevated to full champion status after Jaron "Boots" Ennis moved up to 154 pounds. After a proposed bout with Devin Haney fell through, the focus shifted to "The Takeover". Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) is making his debut at 147 pounds. Normally, a bout to get accustomed to the weight happens. But Lopez wanted to jump right into the fire against Romero. He looks to get back on track in a big way and become a three-division world champion after losing his WBO and Ring Magazine belts to Shakur Stevenson in January. WBA welterweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) and former two-division champion Teofimo Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) went face to face Thursday at Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles to officially announce their 12-round world title fight Saturday, August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout headlines a PBC pay-per-view promoted by TGB Promotions in association with Takeover Promotions. The press conference opened with the announcement of a distribution agreement between PBC and DAZN that will bring PBC fight nights to the platform worldwide, with the August 22 pay-per-view also available on Prime Video. WBC super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora, WBA featherweight champion Brandon Figueroa, interim WBC middleweight champion Jesus Ramos Jr. and IBF bantamweight champion Jose Salas Reyes appeared as part of that portion of the program. Normally, a fight promotion involves animosity of some sort. Reasons are sometimes known. Sometimes they are not. In the case of Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez at Thursday's press conference to promote their Aug. 22 DAZN PPV headliner, the exchanges were friendly, but there was an underlying tension between the two. Things started early when Romero was talking, and Lopez's father, Teofimo Sr., was going back and forth. Teofimo Sr. said that after the two had trained in the past, they stopped hearing from Romero after he lost to Gervonta Davis in May 2022. As the presser went on, the talk was calm, and the tension seemed to have soothed. Lopez provided a different account. "We are kinda like beating around the bush of it," Lopez said of the animosity. "The time is up. We got to fight each other. We got to settle it in the ring. That’s why it’s a real man’s sport. If you got problems, you settle it in the boxing ring." The cool, calm, and collected Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) appeared to have a different perspective. Although it was hard to tell with Romero's sarcasm throughout the press conference, which included the WBA welterweight champion receiving a duck stuffed animal from Lopez that the native of Las Vegas quipped was WBO champion, Devin Haney. "Me and Teo ain’t friends," Romero said. "He’s my little brother at the end of it. If I’m to lose this belt or to defend my belt, I’d rather have it be with him than anyone else. Only God knows what’s going to happen." Teofimo Lopez is looking to regain his world champion status when he challenges WBA (Super) welterweight champion Rolando Romero in August, but ‘The Takeover’ already knows the fight that he wants to come after that outing. Lopez dethroned lineal champions in Vasyl Lomachenko and Josh Taylor when he claimed world honours at lightweight and super-lightweight respectively, but he was outclassed by Shakur Stevenson back in January – losing his WBO 140lb title by a wide unanimous decision. The Brooklyn-based 28-year-old has wasted no time in thrusting himself back into the mix though, accepting a shot at Romero’s WBA world title upon his 147lb debut, seeking to become a three-division world champion. In an interview with Ring Magazine, Lopez looked ahead to the fight and admitted that Romero’s awkwardness is what makes him a difficult obstacle, and highlighted it as the reason why he was able to trump Ryan Garcia last year.
