Canelo Alvarez faces Jaime Munguia tonight, with his undisputed super-middleweight world title on the line. The 33-year-old is in acton on Cinco de Mayo weekend and it’s a particularly special occasion this time against compatriot Munguia, his first Mexican opponent in seven years. It was on this weekend two years ago that Canelo fell to defeat against Dmitry Bivol when stepping up to challenge at light-heavyweight, but a return to 168lbs has brought three wins since then, with Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder and most recently Jermell Charlo all beaten on points. His WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF belts will be on the line tonight against Munguia, who boasts an unbeaten 43-0 record and now looks to dethrone the super-middleweight king. The 27-year-old was last in the ring in January, when he also faced Ryder and stopped the Briton in the ninth round for his 34th victory inside the distance. That was only Munguia’s second fight at 168lbs, having beaten Sergiy Derevyanchenko last year when first making the step up in weight. While this is by far the toughest test of Munguia’s career, he is a former world champion, having held the WBO super-welterweight strap and defended it five times before moving up in 2019. #caneloalvarez #jaimemunguia #canelomunguia
