Match preview A year to the day that Unai Emery was relieved of his duties as Arsenal manager, the Spaniard's successor Mikel Arteta witnessed a ghastly performance which could have him fearing for his Emirates future as well. Arsenal's showdown with Wolverhampton Wanderers was marred by a sickening clash of heads between Raul Jimenez and David Luiz, but even after their star striker had to be given oxygen as he was stretchered off and transported to hospital, Wolves produced a top-class performance to travel back to the West Midlands with three points in the bag. Arteta witnessed his side score a long-overdue goal from open play in the Premier League as Gabriel Magalhaes powered a header home, but strikes from Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence saw Wolves come out on top and condemn Arsenal to a third top-flight defeat in a row on familiar territory. The Gunners, like many teams, are afflicted with numerous injuries at the moment, but Arteta has now overseen Arsenal's worst ever start to a Premier League season after 10 matches and a top-four charge already looks dead in the water heading into the festive period. One thing that Gooners can take solace in is their side's dominance in Europa League Group B, with Arsenal already guaranteed to advance to the knockout stages, and Arteta's side can secure top spot in the group with victory on their own turf against Vienna. Rapid Vienna boast a far better goal difference than second-placed Molde, but having lost 1-0 to the Norwegian outfit back in October, this week's visitors to the Emirates find themselves outside of the top two. Since losing their opening two group matches, the Austrian giants have notched up seven goals in two successive victories against Dundalk to keep their knockout dreams alive and confirm the Irish side's elimination in the process. With Molde expected to further their own bid for a top-two finish with a victory against Dundalk on matchday five, Rapid Vienna will know that nothing less than a win at the Emirates - however difficult that may be - will do before their crunch showdown with Molde in the final round of group matches. Dietmar Kuhbauer's side have been faltering in the league, though, with Rapid Vienna's winless streak stretching to three top-flight matches as Austria Vienna held them to a 1-1 draw in the capital derby. Arsenal just about managed to eke out a win when they paid a visit to Austria on matchday one, with Luiz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both netting after Taxiarchis Fountas had opened the scoring for Rapid Vienna. Arsenal Europa League form: WWWW Arsenal form (all competitions): WWLDWL Rapid Vienna Europa League form: LLWW Rapid Vienna form (all competitions): WWDLWD Team News Arsenal have confirmed the solemn news that Thomas Partey's injury is worse than first thought, and the summer arrival is likely to remain on the treatment table until 2021. Luiz played on for another 30 minutes with blood seeping through his bandage against Wolves - a move which was heavily criticised - and the Brazilian defender is confirmed to be missing this one out. Nicolas Pepe should start this one amid his domestic suspension, while Reiss Nelson - who was dropped for Willian at the weekend in spite of his impressive performance at Molde - is expected to get the nod on the opposite flank. Aubameyang's struggles in front of goal continued against Wolves - despite finding himself in a more familiar central role - and the 31-year-old will make way for either Alexandre Lacazette or Eddie Nketiah here. As for Thursday's visitors, midfield duo Dejan Petrovic and Dejan Ljubicic are thought to be nearing returns to action, but the trip to Arsenal will come too soon for both players. Wholesale changes are unlikely, but Fountas made an appearance from the bench in the Vienna derby and will be dreaming of a second goal against the Gunners this week, so he should start this one. Molde vs Arsenal result Five From Gunners Europa League group Passage Arsenal produced an improved second-half showing to beat Molde 3-0 in the Europa League. A fairly dismal first 45 minutes saw the two best moments fall for the home team, with Sheriff Sinyan missing from one yard out and goalkeeper Runar Runarsson missing the ball entirely after running out of his box to clear for the Gunners. Nicolas Pepe finally curled in the opener just moments into the second half, though, before Joe Willock put a great cross over for Reiss Nelson to score from minutes later. There were further chances for Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette, before sub Folarin Balogun sealed the routine win and Arsenal’s qualification from the group phase with a neat finish on the turn. Here are five things we learned from the game in Norway. Tags: #Molde #Arsenal #EuropaLeague

The Gunners crashed out at the first knockout stage last time out but are among the favourites to go all the way this time, though this could be a tricky opening test for them. Match preview Mikel Arteta admitted to being "hurt" by Arsenal's shock loss to Olympiacos in last season's last 32, with Youssef El Arabi scoring late in extra time to seal a dramatic victory. This is now Arsenal's fourth attempt at trying to win the Europa League, having previously reached the semi-finals and finished runners-up in 2018 and 2019 respectively. The Gunners will be taking the competition seriously, too, although as ever the early rounds can often be a distraction from the bigger target - a top-four finish in the league. Arsenal have made a good start to their season, winning three and losing two of their opening five league games, albeit with two of those defeats coming in their last three games. That includes a slender 1-0 loss to Manchester City last time out, leaving Arteta's men fifth in the table with nine points from a possible 15. With an EFL Cup quarter-final place already in the bag, focus now switches to the continent for the first time this season. As well as facing Rapid Vienna home and away, Arsenal will also take on Norwegian and Irish champions Molde and Dundalk over the next two months. Rapid boast plenty of experience in UEFA's secondary competition, with this their eighth campaign, reaching the knockout stages on two occasions previously - 2015-16 and 2018-19. The Green-Whites are also in the early stages of their campaign and enter this game on the back of three straight wins, most recently thrashing Wiener Neustadt 5-1 in the cup, though they did face the disappointment of losing to Gent in Champions League qualifying. After finishing second in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, the aim for Dietmar Kuhbauer this time around will be to finish above Red Bull Salzburg at the top of the pile. This will be Rapid's first meeting with Arsenal, although the Austrian side did beat Aston Villa 3-2 in a Europa League qualifying match nine years ago in their most recent meeting with an English side. Arsenal's last Austrian opponents were Austria Wien in the 1991-92 European Cup, meanwhile, winning that one 6-1 at home before losing 1-0 away. Rapid Vienna form (all competitions): WLDWWW Arsenal form (all competitions): WWLWWL Team News Summer signing Thomas Partey made his debut from the bench against Man City and is in contention to make his full debut here. There will be no Mesut Ozil or Sokratis Papastathopoulos as both players were left of Arsenal's Europa League squad. With Sunday's home league meeting with Leicester City likely taking priority, Arteta could turn to academy graduates Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Joe Willock. Bukayo Saka, who was directly involved in more goals in the Europa League last season than any other Arsenal player, is expected to be given a breather. As for the home side, an unnamed player has tested positive for coronavirus in the build-up to the game and will therefore miss this match. However, he was not in close contact with any of his teammates so Kuhbauer still has pretty much a full-strength squad to choose from. Taxiarchis Fountas has four goals in four league appearances this season and is one to watch for Rapid. Rapid Vienna possible starting lineup: Strebinger; Stojkovic, Hofmann, Barac; Arase, Grahovac, Ljubicic, Ullmann; Murg, Kara, Fountas Arsenal possible starting lineup: Runarsson; Luiz, Gabriel, Kolasinac; Cedric, Elneny, Partey, Maitland-Niles; Willock, Nketiah, Nelson We say: Rapid Vienna 1-2 Arsenal Rapid Vienna have won four home games in a row in all competitions, whereas Arsenal are winless inside 90 minutes in their last three away games, losing two of those. However, the Gunners were unbeaten in their four away matches in the Europa League last term and, even accounting for some rotation, we can see them prevailing at the Allianz Stadion.
