Reading 2-2 Sunderland: Black Cats throw a lead away once again
At full-time the Sunderland bodies slumped. Hands over faces. Heads down. For the second time in a week, the players knew they had thrown away a lead and were having to settle for a draw in their battle to survive in the Championship.Against Norwich on Tuesday, they were 1-0 up with two minutes left, having missed a penalty before Ivo Pinto equalised for the Canaries.This time though, the Sunderland fans didn't have to wait until the dying seconds of the game for the heartbreak. That came in the 79th minute when Reading's Yann Kermorgant pulled one back with a header to make it 2-2. Reading had taken the lead, and looked the better of the two sides for much of the first half. In the 19th minute they got their reward when Lee Camp spilled a ball into the path of Reading's Jon Bodvarsson.The goalkeeper closed down the angle but in doing so, clattered into the Icelandic international.Referee Stephen Martin awarded a penalty and Liam Kelly smashed it past Camp to give Paul Clement's side a lead.Sunderland pressed forward but everything they tried to do just didn't quite come off. Passes were just an inch too long, crosses were slightly overweighted and Ashley Fletcher hit the post, but Reading were able to keep them at bay until after the break.Whatever Chris Coleman said to his Sunderland team at half-time, it clearly worked as they equalised straight after the interval.Paddy McNair picked the ball up inside the Reading half and with nobody available to take a pass he carried on his cavalier run before pulling the trigger.His effort - from 30 yards out - was speculative and it left Vito Mannone rooted to the spot in the goalmouth as it rippled the back of the net.Strangely it was now Sunderland in the ascendancy and they made that tell with a second goal. The legs may be old, some would say even gone. But that doesn't matter if you score with your head.And that's just what Lee Cattermole did as he glanced in Aiden McGeady's curling free-kick to give the Black Cats the lead. Could they do it? Could they hold on?By then there were 24 minutes to play. They had chances to extend their lead and Reading had opportunities to draw level.The difference was Reading took theirs as Chris Gunter lofted in a delivery and Kermorgant hit home.The bodies slumped to the turf, and the Sunderland players knew that once again they had blown it.
