The NHL has suspended Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin for four games for checking out Nashville Predators defenseman Mark Borowiecki. #NHLsuspends #Penguins #Malkin4 #gamescrosschecking Evgeni Malkin's four-game suspension for checking the face of Nashville's Mark Borowiecki was a major blow to the Pittsburgh Penguins as they looked to maintain a playoff spot. Malkin will miss upcoming games against the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins after the NHL's player safety department announced a suspension following a disciplinary hearing on Monday. In a video explaining the suspension, the league called Malkin's cross-check "retaliatory and aggressive." Malkin was initially given just four minutes of a small double after hitting Borowitzki in the mouth with a racket late in the second quarter on Sunday. "Emotional Game" "It was an emotional game," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan told reporters after the game. "It's physical, and sometimes this kind of thing happens. It's a physical game, especially in front of the net in the area where it happens. "Obviously we don't want our best players to be in the box, but these guys are competitive guys who will fight back. We'd rather have them on the ice. When they're on the ice, they give It's a better chance for us, of course. But one of the things we like about Geno is his competitiveness, so when you play emotional games like ours today, these things happen." This is Malkin's second suspension following a one-game suspension in 2019 for high stickiness. He has been fined 3 times. The suspension cost him $190,000 in salary. He is eligible for a comeback against Detroit on April 23. The Penguins beat the Predators in overtime for a four-game run. They've lost seven of their last 10 games and are in danger of falling from third in the Mets to a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Malkin missed the first 34 games of the season while recovering from knee surgery. Since his season debut on January 11, the 35-year-old Russian center has become a scorer with 17 goals and 20 assists in 37 games.
