I college iniziano a interessarsi a lui e la sua vita sembra poter prendere una svolta importante, ma accade qualcosa, come in tutte le grandi storie che si rispettano. Nella notte di San Valentino del 1993 Iverson finisce in una rissa in una sala da Bowling e viene arrestato. La sua versione è semplice: un ragazzo bianco gli ha rivolto insulti razzisti e a quel punto lui aveva risposto, dando il via a un corpo a corpo dal quale era stato trascinato via da un suo amico, evitando in questo modo che finisse nella rissa vera e propria che si era scatenata successivamente. Ma tutti i presenti nella sala da bowling avevano fatto il suo nome e in aula nessuno crede alla sua versione. Iverson viene riconosciuto colpevole di rissa aggravata e incitazione al linciaggio. L’accusa ha vita facile nel tentativo di demolire la figura di un ragazzo ritenuto da tutti difficile. Vengono chiesti 60 anni di carcere. La sentenza di primo grado è di 15, con 10 anni di sospensione. Allen Iverson ora, nel momento in cui il futuro per la prima volta nella sua vita sembrava sorridergli, deve scontare 5 anni in carcere. A questo punto Ann Iverson è sicura: l’unico a potergli dare un’altra chance è John Thompson, il coach della squadra di basket dell’università di Georgetown. Ha la fama del sergente di ferro, ma anche dell’uomo che è pronto a rigenerare talenti apparentemente dannati. Da giocatore aveva vinto due titoli con i Boston Celtics, da allenatore aveva portato gli Hoyas al titolo nel 1984, allenando Patrick Ewing e Reggie Williams: era stato così il primo allenatore nero a portare un college alla vittoria in NCAA.
