Teamwork isn’t the first word that typically comes to mind when talking about Pipe. But that’s exactly what’s about to happen, as the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout in Memory of Duke Kahanamoku returns to the Banzai Pipeline with their tried-and-true, non-elimination team format. Here’s the deal: surfers are divided into eight teams — either by sponsor, neighborhood, peer group, or some other affiliation — but the whole competition is intended to, according to event organizers, “foster a sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and community spirit among the participants.” According to Da Hui Backdoor Shootout organizers, the event “emphasizes traditional Hawaiian surfing style and places importance on style, power, and respect for the ocean. Surfers are judged not only on their technical maneuvers but also on their overall approach, wave selection, and ability to navigate the tuberides and come out with control and style.” The holding period is from January 4th-16th, and in addition to the main team comp there will be individual Duke Specialty Events with coed divisions in longboard, SUP and bodysurfing. Aside from the competition, there will be heaps of cultural activities on offer: hula performances, traditional Hawaiian music, local food vendors… It’s basically Aloha Incarnate. *** Main Event Heat Draw for Round 1: #1 – Japan #2 – A New Earth Project #3 – Nave #4 – 96712 #5 – Snapt5 #6 – North Shore Boyz #7 – Tubos #8 - Volcom *New heats will be drawn each morning. David Robinson is one of the greatest athletes in American sports history. Standing at 7'1", with a wingspan that allowed him to dominate both ends of the floor, the Admiral was one of the most unstoppable weapons in NBA history. Robinson's agility and speed was incredible to watch. He possessed a rare combination of size, athleticism, balance, and skill that allowed him to run the floor like a guard, finish with authority at the rim, draw the D and dish the rock to an open teammate, or drill a pull-up jumper with consistency. Defensively, his lateral quickness, timing, uncanny ability to quickly get off the floor multiple times, and exceptional leaping ability made him an elite shot-blocker, capable of altering the game's tempo by deterring opponents from attacking the paint. As a rebounder David Robinson was quick to the basketball and used sound technique. Robinson's footwork was exemplary; he could hedge and recover on pick-and-rolls, switch onto smaller players with ease, and was a master of verticality, challenging shots without fouling. His defensive IQ was reflected in his ability to anchor a defense, communicate switches, and provide help-side defense. Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood was a tough neighborhood to dominate in. (For younger fans, that's a reference to the Nike ads.) Technically, David Robinson's abilities were exceptionally polished. He excelled in every offensive role he undertook. Whether facilitating as a point center or contending in the paint against formidable opponents like Shaq and Hakeem, Robinson performed at an elite level. His performances were consistently top-tier, with scarcely few subpar showings. While Robinson's most impressive achievements and games are often celebrated, identifying games where his negative plays led to Spurs' defeats is a challenging task. Among all historically dominant centers, Robinson stands out for the rarity of his mistakes on the court. David Robinson was also one of the most selfless players ever, sacrificing the later years of his prime, stepping aside as the lead Spurs player, so Tim Duncan could take the lead role & develop as a future champion. Some David Robinson Feats (Keep in mind he started playing late, and sacrificed prime years to the Navy): Career High - 71 points NBA Rookie of the Year (1990) NBA Rebounding Champion (1991) NBA Blocked Shots Champion (1992) NBA Defensive Player of the Year (1992) 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist (Dream Team) (1992, 1996) NBA Scoring Champion (1994) 4-time All-NBA First Team (during a stacked era) 2-time All-NBA Second Team 4-time All-NBA Third Team 10-time NBA All-Star 50 - His Jersey number retired in San Antonio for the Spurs One of only 4 players to put up a quadruple double which he did on 2/17/1994 vs the Detroit Pistons. He played one year of college basketball for the Memphis Tigers before being drafted first overall by his hometown Chicago Bulls in the 2008 NBA draft.[1] He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2009 and became the youngest player to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2011 at age 22. Rose was born and raised in Chicago, and attended Simeon Career Academy. He was highly recruited by colleges, eventually choosing to join the University of Memphis under coach John Calipari. Rose led the Tigers to the most wins in NCAA history (a 38–2 record), their first number 1 ranking in 25 years, and an appearance in the NCAA championship game. In 2009, an NCAA investigation revealed that Rose's SAT scores had been invalidated, and as a result, the NCAA vacated Memphis' entire 2007–08 season.[2] Rose has struggled with significant knee injuries since his 2010–11 MVP season. In the first round of the 2012 NBA playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, Rose tore his ACL in his left knee. Rose required surgery and was subsequently sidelined for the entire 2012–13 season.[3] Rose returned to play in 2013–14, but in November 2013, Rose injured his right meniscus, causing him to miss the remainder of the season.[4] He returned once again the following season, but knee injuries continued to impact his availability and his production. In June 2016, Rose was traded to the Knicks, where he finished the final year of his contract. He signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a minimum salary for the 2017–18 season but was hobbled by ankle injuries, which led to him being traded to and subsequently waived by the Utah Jazz in February 2018.[5] He signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves a month later on a rest-of-season contract; he stayed with the team through the following season and enjoyed a revived role as a sixth man off the bench despite missing 31 games due to injury management. For the 2019–20 season, the Detroit Pistons signed Rose to his first non-minimum salary contract since 2012, and he continued to be successful off the bench.[6] The following season, he was reunited with his former coach Tom Thibodeau when the Knicks re-acquired him in a trade. Rose was born and raised in the Englewood area, one of the most dangerous neighborhoods on Chicago's South Side.[7] He is the youngest son of Brenda Rose after Dwayne, Reggie, and Allan. All three were talented basketball players who taught Rose the ins and outs of basketball on nearby courts.[7][8] As his talent for the sport grew, Rose began to attract much more outside attention in Chicago's basketball circles, leading his mother and brothers to restrict outside contact to him. She feared he would be exploited and his path to the NBA diverted by outside parties like street agents, similar to what happened to former Chicago prospect Ronnie Fields.[9]
