Nachdem sich die Dortmunder Abwehr stabilisiert hatte, zeigten sich die Gäste mit dem ersten guten Angriff aus einem Konterspiel heraus wahrlich effizient: Salih Özcan bediente Flügelstürmer Donyell Malen mit einem öffnenden Diagonalball. Der Niederländer setzte sich stark gegen den taumelnden Tuta durch und bediente passgenau Nationalspieler Julian Brandt, der in der Mitte aus knapp zehn Metern flach und wuchtig zur 1:0-Führung für Borussia Dortmund durch die Beine von Evan Ndicka und Kevin Trapp einschoss (20.). Vor der Halbzeitpause kam es zu dem wohl größten Aufreger der Samstagabendpartie: Nachdem Kolo Muani nur besagten Pfosten getroffen hatte, hätte Eintracht-Kollege Lindström den Abpraller eigentlich einschieben können, kam aber durch Kontakt mit Dortmunds Karim Adeyemi zu Fall. Der Unparteiische ließ die Partie weiterlaufen, der VAR schaltete sich nicht ein (42.). Nach der Pause hatte sich der BVB hinten sortiert und schlug vorne eiskalt zu. Nach Spielaufbau von Niklas Süle legte Youssoufa Moukoko den Ball in den Lauf von Jude Bellingham, der Tuta stehen ließ und eiskalt gegen Frankfurts Schlussmann Trapp präzise mit links Dortmund 2:1 erneut in Führung brachte (52.). Einen erneuten Gegenstoß von Frankfurt, diesmal durch Lindström, konnte BVB-Keeper Gregor Kobel diesmal mit einer starken Parade verhindern (54.). Und auch Abwehrspieler Nico Schlotterbeck parierte auf der Linie mit dem Knie gegen Götzes Abschluss (57.) und hielt die Dortmunder weiter in Führung. Am Ende war es aber nicht nur die Torwartleistung von Kobel, die Dortmund den Drei-Punkte-Gewinn brachte, auch haderte Frankfurt mit der eigenen Chancenverwertung viel zu oft.
