Talking Hoosier Baseball - 2026 - Week 12 Northwestern
Talking Hoosier Baseball - 2026 - Week 12 Northwestern

ndiana Baseball started the week by going on the road to Louisville and claiming another midweek win to finish the season an impressive 9-2 in those contests. The Hoosiers got a fantastic 5-inning scoreless start from graduate lefty Conner Linn, and the offense put up 5 runs in the third on the way to a 10-6 victory. The Hoosiers got a special treat in being the team that got to play Northwestern in the annal game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Our own Zach and Josh Bennett were on hand for that one. The Hoosiers put on a show for the mostly IU friendly crowd. Tony Neubeck tossed six scoreless frames. The top of the Hoosier order Hogan Denny, Jake Hanley, and Owen ten Oever, combined to reach base nine times. The Hoosiers dominated the game for a 9-2 win. The series shifted to suburb of Evanston on Saturday and things did not go well for the Hoosiers. At least three critical base running mistakes kept the Hoosiers from extending an early lead. Starter Brayton Thomas was excellent through two innings, but lost command in the third inning and never returned to form. He was replaced in the fourth and Indiana would give up seven runs total. Despite a 4-for-4 day from Hogan Denny and Indiana doubling Northwestern's hit total, the Hoosiers dropped the game 7-4. In the Sunday rubber match it was the early game pitching that faltered as Conner Linn was not effective on short rest and Northwestern rocked bullpen ace Gavin Seebold in the 2nd inning. Seebold would settle in and get the Hoosiers through the fifth, but the deficit proved too much and the Hoosiers dropped the series with a 9-6 loss.

Call (513) 655-3356 or visit qckinetix.com The series opened with a convincing 9–1 victory, as the Pirates set the tone early. Their lineup applied steady pressure, stringing together hits and capitalizing on mistakes. Meanwhile, the pitching staff kept Cincinnati’s offense quiet, allowing little room for any comeback. It was a balanced effort that highlighted Pittsburgh’s ability to control a game from start to finish. If Game 1 was controlled, Game 2 was a full-on offensive eruption. The Pirates exploded for 17 runs, overwhelming the Reds in nearly every inning. Hits came from throughout the lineup, with multiple players contributing big performances. Extra-base hits, timely swings, and relentless pressure turned the game into a rout. Cincinnati simply had no answer, as Pittsburgh took advantage of every opportunity and showed the depth of its offense. The finale told a completely different story, but with the same result. In a tight 1–0 win, the Pirates relied on elite pitching and defensive execution. Every pitch mattered, and the staff delivered under pressure, shutting out the Reds and preserving the narrow lead. It was a testament to their ability to win in different ways—slugging when needed and grinding out close games when offense is scarce. Outscoring Cincinnati 27–8 over the series, Pittsburgh demonstrated a clear edge in execution, consistency, and adaptability. Whether through power at the plate or precision on the mound, the Pirates dictated the terms all weekend, leaving the Reds searching for answers as the division race continues. The NHL’s division system has always played a huge role in shaping how the playoffs unfold, and it quietly decides how difficult a team’s path really is. Teams spend the entire regular season battling within their own division, building rivalries and getting used to the same opponents. When the playoffs start, those same matchups carry over into the first rounds. On paper it creates intensity and familiarity, but in reality it can create completely different levels of difficulty depending on where a team is placed. Some divisions are loaded from top to bottom, forcing teams to survive constant heavy matchups just to advance, while others give a bit more room to operate. That is where the conversation starts to get heated. When a team like the Carolina Hurricanes falls behind 2 to 0 and still manages to come back without it ever feeling out of reach, people begin to question how tough the road actually is. In some divisions, going down like that means the series is basically over because the competition punishes every mistake. In others, there is more margin for error, and that changes how these games feel. It is not just about how good a team is, it is about the environment they are playing in and the level of pressure they are facing every shift. Because of that, the division format ends up driving narratives just as much as it creates matchups. A comeback in one division is seen as grit and resilience, while the exact same comeback somewhere else can get brushed off as expected or even lucky. Fans notice those differences, and it fuels debates about which teams are truly being tested and which ones are benefiting from the structure. The system guarantees rivalries and drama, but it also guarantees that not every playoff path is equal, and that is why moments like this always turn into bigger conversations than just one game. #nhlplayoffs #OTWINNER #hockey#nhlhighlights
