La Vuelta 2021 Stage 15 Highlights | Breakaways And GC Action In The Mountains
Another tough day in the Mountains, the stage starts in Sierra de Gredos towards the eastern area of the massifs. Flat at the beginning around the region of Extremadrua, once the riders enter the province of Castilla-La-Mancha the first of four cat climbs begins. The first climb is up the Alto de la Centera for 15.5km, but not even before riders complete a full descent does the next climb of Puerto de Pedro Bernardo ascend, albeit a longer but shallower climb. Roglič and Mas could be battling it out through this stage with the next climb reaching 1,570m above sea level (the highest point of the stage), climbing for a whole 20km and with the last climb of Puerto San Juan de Nava having bonus points could cause a scramble between the top of the GC contenders. El ciclista ecuatoriano gana la etapa 3 del giro de Italia 2020 y es segundo en la general. Team Ineos se desmorona, Un joven portugués se viste de rosa y Ecuador celebra nuevamente en el giro. La etapa tres presentaba un recorrido plano en el inicio con un descenso de 10 kilómetros iniciada la fracción y dos sprints puntuables luego de la segunda mitad del recorrido, uno en el kilómetro 108 y otro bonificable justo en la base del monte Etna. Un puerto de 18,6 kilómetros al 6,7 de desnivel promedio y los últimos 2 kilómetros con rampas superiores al 9 por ciento. Mientras rodaban por las calles de Enna y la carrera estaba neutralizada se presentó una caída que involucró a Geraint Thomas del Ineos. Un bidón de agua hizo que el gales perdiera el control de su bicicleta y fuera al suelo. Dura caída que más adelante en el desarrollo de la etapa tuvo sus consecuencias. 6 corredores se involucraron en la fuga del día, entre ellos Matthew Holmes, Lawson Craddock, Josip Rumac, Víctor Campenaerst, Mikkel Bjerg y Francesco Romano. Más adelante saltarían del pelotón el veterano Giovanni Visconti junto al ecuatoriano Jonathan Caicedo y conformarían un grupo de 8 pedalistas que trabajando mancomunadamente lograron distanciar al lote y obtener una renta de hasta 5 minutos de diferencia. El Mitchelton Scott es el equipo que se pone al frente del pelotón para empezar a reducir la distancia que tienen con la fuga, por momentos logran achicar la renta a tres minutos, pero el trabajo sincronizado que hay adelante hace que la diferencia de nuevo se amplíe. Jumbo y el trek también buscan posibilidades de etapa y entran a colaborar en la persecución. Avanzan los kilómetros y Geraint Thomas empieza a sufrir las consecuencias de su caída en la primera parte, no consigue mantener el ritmo y aun con la ayuda del líder Filippo Ganna y Ben Swift no consigue mantenerse en el lote, empiezan a caerle segundos que más tarde serian minutos, situación que aprovechan el lote para marcar un paso más fuerte y eliminar a uno de los grandes favoritos para llevarse el giro. Una mascota en la carretera por poco produce una caída, por suerte ya habían iniciado el ascenso y el grupo no rodada a una velocidad muy alta. Simon Yates otro de los favoritos sucumbe ante el ritmo que imponen los hombres del Bora y también se queda del grupo, los ciclistas del trek comandados por Nibali aceleran el paso en la montaña y dejan knock out a Yates. Mal día para los británicos que junto a Geraint Thomas ven a otro de sus nacionales quedarse lejos de la conversación por el título. La fuga en el ascenso ha ido perdiendo componentes y solo un trio de ciclistas marcha en punta, Mikkel Bjerg, Caicedo, y Visconti ruedan a 12 kilómetros de meta con una diferencia de tres minutos que los pone a soñar con un triunfo de etapa. Por su parte Jonathan Castroviejo salta del paquete principal y busca unirse a los punteros, la salida ocasiona que se mueva el lote y la diferencia con la fuga se siga recortando. Adelante y a tres de meta Giovanni Visconti ataca al ecuatoriano pero su veteranía no es suficiente para asustarlo. El de Ecuador nivela su rueda y sigue de largo, la leve llovizna y el frio del Etna emulan los paisajes de su Carchi natal donde entrena a diario. Se siente como en casa, aplica potencia y se va en solitario para buscar la etapa. Hay buenas sensaciones, entra al último kilómetro pedaleando sin mirar atrás sabiendo que lejos ha quedado Visconti, cruza la línea de meta y levanta a los brazos dibujando una sonrisa en su rostro. Jonathan Klever Caicedo se hace con su primera etapa en una grande y le da al Ecuador su cuarta victoria en la historia del giro de Italia. No esta Carapaz, pero llega otra máquina venida del Carchi dispuesto a exaltar el amarillo azul y rojo de su tricolor. Arriban un poco más atrás Visconti, Vanhoucke y kelderman, y unos segundos después un pequeño grupo con los favoritos, el monte Etna ha puesto las cosas en orden. Nibali, Kruijswijk, Majka, Fuglsang y Almeida se meten en la pelea por el giro. Una carrera que hasta empezar la etapa de hoy tenia a Thomas y yates con una ventaja considerable, pero que al revisar la tabla final ya no aparecen ni entre los 30 primeros de la general. El nuevo líder es el portugués Joao Almeida y se confirma como uno de los favoritos al título, ahora Jonathan Caicedo es su escolta con el mismo tiempo y no es líder por las milésimas que le tomo de ventaja Almeida en la crono.
