The New Orleans Saints might not be postseason bound, but they did enough in Atlanta to handle their business and remind their players, future players, and others paying attention of their competitive spirit and winning culture. Between loosing Drew Brees, chopping down the salary cap, replacing players at just about every position, a record-breaking 58 unique starters, Hurricane Ida, and COVID outbreaks, the New Orleans Saints went through the ringer. But whether it was Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Tevor Siemian, or Ian Book under center, Sean Payton was prepared and ready to compete - a clear Coach of the Year candidate. Cam Jordan, Kwon Alexander, Alvin Kamara, and Marcus Davenport - among others - all had standout performances in the Saints' 30-20 victory over the rival Atlanta Falcons. Although the Los Angeles Rams couldn't hold up their end of the bargain and the Saints will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017, New Orleans needs not be pitied. The New Orleans Saints added quarterbacks Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian to the COVID/Reserve list Thursday morning leading to the expectation that rookie QB Ian Book will be the starter on Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. With Jameis Winston's season over on the injured reserve list, Book would be the fourth starting signal caller for the Saints. Ian Book was a highly-coveted draft prospect by the New Orleans Saints beyond just his Senior Bowl performance. Tom Brady, despite throwing for over 300 yards and 4 touchdowns, turned the ball over three times with the final one being the nail in the coffin as P.J. Williams returned it for a touchdown. Chris Godwin finished with a season high 140 yards on eight catches, adding in a touchdown that gave the Bucs the early 7-0 lead, but it was third string quarterback Trevor Siemian that led the charge for New Orleans once Jameis Winston left the game with a knee injury. Siemian got the Saints out to a 23-7 lead early in the second half before Brady and the Buccaneers offense stormed back to take a 27-26 lead. In the end, the defense couldn't get the job done, allowing the Saints to march down the field for a go ahead field goal before the ill timed pick six put the game out of reach with under 1:40 to play. The biggest story surrounding this one was the penalties. The Buccaneers accounted for eleven of the game's thirteen penalties, awarding the Saints six free first downs because of lapses in judgement by the defense. One penalty - an early roughing the passer call - negated an interception in the end zone by Antoine Winfield Jr. that could have swung the game in the Bucs' favor in the second quarter. Though officiating was not the reason the Buccaneers lost this game, some suspect calls - or non-calls - certainly played into it. Through 24 games in the regular season, Tom Brady has turned the ball over against the Saints eight times in three games, while turning the ball over just twelve times in the other 21 games. The Bucs have now lost six regular season matchups in a row, their last win coming in week one of 2018 where they were led by Ryan Fitzpatrick. With the Buccaneers headed for the bye week, they have time to continue to get healthy and get some things figured out on both sides of the ball.
