New Orleans Saints rumors and Saints news after a win against the Los Angeles Chargers during NFL preseason Week 3 with a ...
The New Orleans Saints might not be postseason bound, but they did enough in Atlanta to handle their business and remind their players, future players, and others paying attention of their competitive spirit and winning culture. Between loosing Drew Brees, chopping down the salary cap, replacing players at just about every position, a record-breaking 58 unique starters, Hurricane Ida, and COVID outbreaks, the New Orleans Saints went through the ringer. But whether it was Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Tevor Siemian, or Ian Book under center, Sean Payton was prepared and ready to compete - a clear Coach of the Year candidate. Cam Jordan, Kwon Alexander, Alvin Kamara, and Marcus Davenport - among others - all had standout performances in the Saints' 30-20 victory over the rival Atlanta Falcons. Although the Los Angeles Rams couldn't hold up their end of the bargain and the Saints will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017, New Orleans needs not be pitied. As the team proved itself to be one of the most competitive and resilient rosters in the NFL. Offseason storylines are on the way. Will Dennis Allen be the Saints defensive coordinator? Will the Saints be able to keep Marcus Williams? What's happening at quarterback? All just part of what is setting up to be a very intriguing offseason in the Big Easy. The New Orleans Saints added quarterbacks Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian to the COVID/Reserve list Thursday morning leading to the expectation that rookie QB Ian Book will be the starter on Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. With Jameis Winston's season over on the injured reserve list, Book would be the fourth starting signal caller for the Saints. Ian Book was a highly-coveted draft prospect by the New Orleans Saints beyond just his Senior Bowl performance. As the winningest quarterback in Notre Dame history, the Fighting Irish alum crafted a high profile which checked a lot of boxes for Sean Payton, Ronald Curry and even drew praise from Drew Brees himself. Expect the Saints offense to look akin to what it did in the team's win over the New York Jets a pair of weeks ago. Condensed, quick-passing, simple reads, and a heavy dose of Alvin Kamara and the rushing attack. The defense led by Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, Marshon Lattimore and others will be key, however, there is expectation that more players could be added to the reserve list throughout the week. New Orleans Saints WR Deonte Harris finally saw his court case stemming from his offseason arrest come to a close. One year of supervised probation and no guilty verdict could be good news for the Saints' leading receiver. However, the NFL will have their own process that could lead to three games of suspension based on the CBA. Losing Deonte Harris would be yet another huge blow to the Saints offense that has struggled in the passing game so far this season. Already down Jameis Winston and Michael Thomas, Deonte Harris has been the most consistent part of the Saints passing game outside of Alvin Kamara. And with Odell Beckham Jr. sure to have several suitors if he clears waivers, the Saints may be short on options to help themselves if they lost Harris for any amount of time. How Deonte Harris, Marquez Callaway, Kenny Stills, Adam Trautman, and other passing game options have fared and what it means without their top option. A deep dive into the Saints loss to the Atlanta Falcons by the numbers. How the perfect storm of uncharacteristic inefficiencies forced the team to play out of their comfort zone and what they might have learned about the rest of their season at quarterback because of it. Marcus Davenport, Cameron Jordan, and David Onyemata all had stand out performances on the defensive line while passing coverage struggled at every other level. What it could mean for rookie Paulson Adebo, especially with C.J. Gardner-Johnson's injury looking not so good. Tom Brady, despite throwing for over 300 yards and 4 touchdowns, turned the ball over three times with the final one being the nail in the coffin as P.J. Williams returned it for a touchdown. Chris Godwin finished with a season high 140 yards on eight catches, adding in a touchdown that gave the Bucs the early 7-0 lead, but it was third string quarterback Trevor Siemian that led the charge for New Orleans once Jameis Winston left the game with a knee injury. Siemian got the Saints out to a 23-7 lead early in the second half before Brady and the Buccaneers offense stormed back to take a 27-26 lead. In the end, the defense couldn't get the job done, allowing the Saints to march down the field for a go ahead field goal before the ill timed pick six put the game out of reach with under 1:40 to play. The biggest story surrounding this one was the penalties. The Buccaneers accounted for eleven of the game's thirteen penalties, awarding the Saints six free first downs because of lapses in judgement by the defense. One penalty - an early roughing the passer call - negated an interception in the end zone by Antoine Winfield Jr. that could have swung the game in the Bucs' favor in the second quarter. Though officiating was not the reason the Buccaneers lost this game, some suspect calls - or non-calls - certainly played into it. Through 24 games in the regular season, Tom Brady has turned the ball over against the Saints eight times in three games, while turning the ball over just twelve times in the other 21 games. The Bucs have now lost six regular season matchups in a row, their last win coming in week one of 2018 where they were led by Ryan Fitzpatrick. With the Buccaneers headed for the bye week, they have time to continue to get healthy and get some things figured out on both sides of the ball.
