Since they currently have nothing to prove the others should have opportunities to secure positions in Nos. 4 and 5. All of these are part of getting ready for the ODI World Cup which will be held at home later this year. However the outcome in Bridgetown with all respect to a tremendous West Indies comeback was a complete letdown. Now that the decider is about to take center stage Rohit and Kohli are both anticipated to be called back for the big game on Tuesday (August 1) in order to prevent a humiliating series loss. One should stand up and give the West Indies credit for their cohesive effort in their convincing victory in the second ODI. The first game of the series in which they were dismissed for 114 in just 23 overs seemed to be a case of "Men against Boys even though Rohit and Kohli did not really have much to offer. The Caribbean outfit realized their mistakes and brought Joseph and Carty back and both of them chipped in with valuable contributions to level the series. They are therefore unlikely to alter the lineup that helped them win their first match against India in three years. Contrarily the Men in Blue will need to make difficult decisions. Suryakumar Yadav was given two opportunities but the top-ranked T20I batsman did not do much with the willow. Now it is interesting to see whether he or Samson who only got one chance gets dropped in the decider to make way for Rohit. Among the rest Kohli and Jaydev Unadkat are likely to take the place of Malik and Patel who are expected to be benched after below-par outings. So which team will emerge victorious in the decider? The irony is obvious. Sixty-six days to go for a home World Cup in which they are meant to be favorites. An experimenting India have just lost an ODI rather comprehensively to a side that was recently chastened for being unable to qualify for the World Cup. India are in a situation where even their opening pair is struggling. Shubman Gill who could do no wrong a couple of months ago has had his technique splayed apart against the Dukes ball - first at the WTC Final and then in the West Indies Tests. West Indies Team news: With no injuries being reported between the two ODIs West Indies are unlikely to tinker with a combination that has worked especially given that some of the previously benched players paid off - Carty and Mayers in particular. even if it was after giving India a sniff with four wickets in a 38-run window. And at the center of the display of character were Keacy and Hope - a veteran and one of the grittier players in the team. India Team news: It's hard to predict what India will do given their experiments in the second ODI. However it's unlikely that India will stick to their guns and risk a sinking morale in the dressing room. It's likely that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play. The real question mark lies in the middle-order they might go with. For now they don't have a World Cup to look forward to. They have no distractions and can focus on beating a scatter-brained India just one more time. What to expect: This is the first game that's being played at the Brian Lara Stadium in this tour. It is known to be a true wicket and aids strokeplay a lot more than the two-paced Barbados wicket. With an Indian batting desperately in need of a get-out-of-jail card this pitch might just be the one to give them a boost. With a typical Trinidad wicket in place it has to be advantage India - and seamers of course in that brief new-ball period. India have taken a 1-0 lead in the series with a five-wicket win but would be looking to iron out their flaws in the second game while for the Windies it is a must-win game to keep the series alive. A win here will be a big boost for the Men in Maroon and let's see how they go about their business in the second ODI at the beautiful Kensington Oval Barbados. India were brilliant with the ball in the first game and hunted down Windies for just 114. The spinners did the trick with 7 wickets between them as Kuldeep took a four-wicket haul in just three overs. Mukesh Kumar the debutant also showed a lot of promise and we can expect India to go with the same bowling attack. As far as batting is concerned India were in a mood of experimentation. Ishan Kishan opened the innings while Suryakumar Yadav batted at 3. But India could not end the chase in a clinical fashion as they lost five wickets on their way. Ishan though scored a fighting fifty in testing conditions which are good signs for India. However India's middle order conundrum is getting mysterious day by day and we might see Samson getting a nod ahead of misfiring Suryakumar Yadav in the second ODI. West Indies on the other hand just need to find a way to apply themselves with the bat. The strike-rotation has been missing in their game for a long time now and they have been guilty of throwing their wickets in a bid to play big shots. Shai Hope has been a lone warrior in the past and he was in the first game too but the likes of Mayers Powell and Hetmyer need to take more responsibility as well. On the bowling front Hope will be happy with the way his bowlers fought till the end. Motie bowled beautifully and he will have to play a big role in the second game too. They might also bring Alzarri Joseph back in the XI for this do-or-die game and we might see a more resilient Windies unit in the second ODI. Let's hope for a cracking encounter. Kuldeep Yadav preferred over Yuzvendra Chahal for the first match. West Indies Team News: Keacy Carty Alzarri Joseph Oshane Thomas and Kevin Sinclair were the ones to sit out for the first game. Among them Carty is an option in the batting order with Mayers not having had a good run in ODIs of late. Carty meanwhile had scored 87 in his previous outing against Sri Lanka. Shai Hope who top-scored with 43 will be hoping for some kind of support at the other end and will expect the batters to show better application with their shot-making going forward. India Team News: The visitors may not make too many changes as they look to give the current lot another go to audition for the World Cup. They are likely to remain unchanged. They are likely to continue with such experiments both with their batting and bowling in second ODI as they look to seal the series and extend their winning streak against the West Indies in ODIs to 10 games. Mukesh was decent in his debut game while India also tried Pandya as their opening bowler with some success. What to expect: There was enough bounce and spin on offer during the first ODI helping the pacers and spinners alike. India might look to bat first should they win the toss in the second game to give their batters some challenge should the pitch turn out anything similar for the second game. Showers are forecast in the first half of the day and might lead to some interruptions. will hoping for some kind of support other end and will expect batters show better application with their shot-making going forward. West Indies are 76/2 at the end of the fourth day's play and they need 289 more runs to win this clash. Early lunch was taken as the game was interrupted multiple times and only 3 overs were possible in the afternoon session. Siraj registered his best Test figures in the morning session as he and Mukesh did short work of the Windies middle and lower order to send them packing for 255. The Indian openers began well adding 98 runs for the first wicket. Rohit was dropped twice on 25 and 29 in the space of two overs and brought up his quickest Test half century. He was eventually dismissed by Shannon Gabriel who dropped one of his catches earlier. Yashasvi Jaiswal also got to an aggressive start and fell against the spinner Jomel Warrican. The left-hand right-hand batting combination was continued as Ishan Kishan was sent to bat at number 4 with the attacking intent. Rain interrupted the game for almost 2 hours with tea taken during the interval. The two batters then added 63 runs in nine overs with Kishan getting his first Test fifty in just 33 balls adding 79 unbeaten with Gill (29*) for the third wicket and set West Indies 365 to win. Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul spearheaded the innings for the West Indies in the 4th innings. The duo played sensibly and negotiated Indian pacers carefully without losing any wickets in the first hour of the last session. Rohit switched the bowling from pace to spin and it proved to be the right decision as Ashwin trapped Brathwaite (28 off 52) and Kirk McKenzie (0 off 4) in quick succession and put West Indies in a spot of bother. Blackwood joined Chanderpaul at number three and the duo played cautiously remaining unbeaten till the end of the fourth day’s play. Rohit employed five bowlers and Ashwin managed to extract a couple of wickets for India. India will aim to wrap up the innings quickly tomorrow and win this clash. Session Breakdown: Morning Session: 19.4 Overs | 124 Runs | 6 Wickets Afternoon Session: 3 Overs | 20 Runs | 1 Wicket Evening Session: 41 Overs | 149 Runs | 2 Wickets. Ashwin removes Brathwaite and McKenzie in the of 2 overs Windies move 50 as Chanderpaul Blackwood stabilize Day 4 Stumps: WI- 76/2 (32 Overs) (Chanderpaul 24 Blackwood 20). Innings Break: IND- 181/2 Declared (24 Overs) (Gill 29 Kishan 52) West Indies a target of 365 runs India a not out decision for caught behind burn a review the fourth over Brathwaite given out against Ashwin but he reviews and survives as the ball was missing the leg stump. Ishan Kishan: "Yeah it was very special. I was aware of what the team required from me and I received support from everyone. Virat supported me and encouraged me to play my game. Let's hope we will finish the game tomorrow. No I think it was planned earlier It was Virat bhai who took the initiative and suggested that I should go in. It was a good call for the team. Sometimes you need to take these calls. We had the plan that we will play 10-12 overs after the rain break and score 70-80 runs. We wanted a 370-380 target. I was at NCA before this. Pant was also present there. He is familiar with my playing style as we have known each other since our under-19 days. Fortunately I found someone to advise me on my bat positioning and I was lucky that Pant was there to tell me something about my bat positioning. Many senior players also engage in discussions with the bowlers. I am looking forward to an exciting game tomorrow where hitting the right areas and getting early wickets will be crucial." A good day of Test cricket all around but India would be the happier dressing room with 288/4 on the board at close. It was a brilliant session for India who lost 4 wickets in the afternoon session but the right-hand left-hand combination of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja has dug in adding an unbeaten 106 runs for the fifth wicket. Kohli played his trademark cover drives and hit 8 fours on a heavy outfield to remain unbeaten on 87 in 161 deliveries. Jadeja has played cautiously so far adding 36 runs in 84 balls. Jomel Warrican (1/55) Jason Holder (1/30) Shannon Gabriel (1/50) and Kemar Roach (1/64) all picked up a wicket apiece in the afternoon session. The final session belonged completely to India as Kohli-Jadeja didn't make a single error despite some visible footmarks on the pitch first day itself. Kohli had a scare when he dived to get back in the crease turning for a couple and got some medical attention. For West Indies substitute fielder Kevin Sinclair injured himself in the deep with Tagenarine Chanderpaul getting hit on the wrists at short leg by Virat Kohli in the final over of the day. The Windies pacers showed lack of intent and failed to put some short stuff in action making it easier the pair to put up runs on the board. Session Breakup: Morning Session: Overs 26 | Runs 121 | Wickets 0 Afternoon Session: Overs 24.4 | Runs 61 | Wickets 4 Evening Session: Overs 33.2 | Runs 106 | Wickets 0. Highest opening partnerships for visiting pairs at Port of Spain 209 - Geoffrey Boycott & Dennis Amiss (ENG 1974) 191 - Arthur Morris & Colin McDonald (AUS 1955) 139 - Rohit Sharma & Yashasvi Jaiswal (IND 2023) 129 - Michael Atherton & Alec Stewart (ENG 1998) 123 - Sadiq Mohammad & Majid Khan (PAK 1977). The over-rate has been appalling to say the least. This duo has added runs and have done so at a very decent rate. Debutants each for two teams; Kirk McKenzie for West Indies Mukesh Kumar for India. West Indies won the toss and opt to bowl. Yashasvi Jaiswal smashes a pull himself in the next over getting another maximum. Back-to-back boundaries from captain Sharma bring the 50-run opening partnership. Hitman brings his 15th Test fifty with another six via the pull shot. Rohit also completes 2000 runs as a Test opener. Kohli gets to his consecutive half-century 30th in the Tests. The fifth wicket partnership between Kohli-Jadeja move past 100. Stumps Day 1: IND- 288/4 (84 Overs) (Kohli 84 Jadeja 36). Most runs in international cricket 34357 - Sachin Tendulkar 28016 - Kumar Sangakkara 27483 - Ricky Ponting 25957 - Mahela Jayawardene 25548 - Virat Kohli. Most runs from No.4 in Test cricket 13492 - Sachin Tendulkar 9509 - Mahela Jayawardene 9033 - Jacques Kallis 7535 - Brian Lara 7097 - Virat Kohli. Shannon Gabriel: "I think it was a tough day based on the pitch. The guys were patient and fought back nicely. We were not in control during the first session but apart from that the guys were disciplined. We hit the good lengths later and got the rewards. We thought there might be some grass on it but it has nothing. We expected some bounce but it too eased out. Just needed to hit those tight lines and lengths. In the second session we were on target. There isn't much spice in the pitch. We weren't at our best in the first session after opting to bowl first. We will sit back and access this in the dressing room. The second new ball is due and we will take it tomorrow. I just hit the hard length closer to the off-stump and I was happy with that (Rahane's) wicket." West Indies won the toss in the first match and decided to bat first. Courtesy of Ashwin India restricted the hosts to just 150 runs in the first innings. After this the Indians put forward a solid and resilient batting effort. Riding on the brilliant starts provided by the openers India managed to put forward a brilliant and solid batting effort posting a total of 425 runs for the loss of five wickets before declaring the innings. In the second innings the Ashwin magic worked again and India dismissed West Indies for just 130 runs this time. With that India won the match by an innings and 141 runs. The visitors will look to maintain the momentum and win this match thus winning the series by a 2-0 margin in the process. This will give Rohit Sharma and his men a brilliant start to the 2023-25 WTC cycle. On the other hand West Indies will try to comeback and walk away with prestige at the end of this clash. As India stand on the brink of another series win in West Indies they'd be resting easy given their commanding performance in the opener. So much so that even a transitioning Indian team start as favorites once again in Trinidad. It has been 21 years since West Indies last failed to lose a Test series against India and with the odds heavily stacked against them once more the hosts would be pleased if they do manage to square the series. It'd be easier said than done for West Indies' batting woes were only exacerbated in Dominica where the conditions too were right up the alley of India's masterful spinners. The challenge in Trinidad could be different if the hosts decide to back their strengths which has been the pace attack over the last few years. The tone usually set by skipper Kraigg at the top has been off-key. Brathwaite was done in twice adding to the four times previously by Ashwin in the first Test leaving a rocky ship without an anchor. India Team News: Having won the first Test handsomely India aren't hard-pressed to make any changes. R Ashwin's performance in that game would all but rule out any thought of going in with a lone spinner. The choice for the third seamer though could still be up for debate with the likes of Navdeep Saini and Mukesh Kumar waiting in the sidelines. West Indies Team News: It is likely given the conditions that West Indies pick an extra pacer instead of two spinners which could pave the way back for Shannon Gabriel who was benched for the first game. Additionally the toss up for the lone spinner's slot will be a toss up between newbie Kevin Sinclair who has been picked with Rahkeem Cornwall staying on albeit a chest infection in the first Test. With Raymon Reifer dropped they could also hand out a cap to Kirk McKenzie. What to expect: In contrast to the first Test at Dominica where spin played a part and had a big say in the outcome of the game this ground has favoured the pacers more over the last decade. With rain expected over the course of the match it could dictate selection calls for both teams. This will be the 100th Test between India and West Indies Since 2021 no bowler has taken more wickets in Tests than R Ashwin who has 111 to his name. Pitch Report: The Queen’s Park Oval track is more favorable to bowlers than batters. Pacers will enjoy bowling on this ground due to the pace and bounce on offer. Early swing can also trouble the batters. Teams winning the toss might choose to bat with the average first innings score being 251. Yashasvi Jaiswal is enroute a great knock getting his maiden ton on debut and walks off unbeaten at 143 in 350 balls. Jaiswal has hit 14 boundaries in his knock and is unbeaten with Virat Kohli (36*). Lots of landmarks for both the batters as Jaiswal became the Indian batter to face most balls on debut and is still looking strong. Kohli however entered the top 5 run scorers chart for Indians in Test cricket surpassing Virender Sehwag in the list. In the final session of play the duo took the lead past 100 with Kohli surviving a referral taken against him. The second new ball was taken after 100 overs and there was some initial movement for Kemar Roach who trapped Jaiswal in front but the umpire's decision was not out on the field. With no review in the kitty Windies failed to make a breakthrough as ball tracking confirmed the ball would have crashed into the stumps. The 50-partnership for the third wicket was breached in 150 deliveries and the duo have now added 72 runs with a healthy lead of 162 runs. West Indies missed the services of Rahkeem Cornwall the off spinner due to his health issue. We will have an official update later as the game progresses on day 3. Jaiswal brings a fifty on debut and also India’s 100 with a boundary. West Indies burn a review after unsuccessfully reviewing a caught behind decision against Jaiswal. Rohit bring up 150 between them for the first wicket and take India to the lead India take first innings lead without losing a wicket for the first time in the history of Tests. Yashasvi Jaiswal: "This was one of the emotional knock for me I would say because as an Indian whenever we go and get opportunities it's really hard and I would like to thank each and everyone specially selectors and our senior players and Rohit bhai that they have given me the chance to go and express myself. Wicket was pretty difficult because the spin is too much here and the outfield is really slow. I was talking to Rohit bhai and Virat bhaiyya about how we can score here and we were just trying to rotate the strike. It has been challenging because its pretty hot and I have to keep thinking that I have to do it for my country and I was telling myself to stay on the ground and keep pushing myself on each and every ball. I was just enjoying my day I guess. That's why I love Test cricket because it's always going to test you. I like that challenge all the time and I just try to enjoy the situation and how can I handle the bouncer balls and when its swinging or spinning. I had prepared for it and I would like to thank to Zubin sir that he worked really hard on each and every part and I am just going and expressing myself. It was really emotional and I am proud of myself and I would like to thank everyone and the god. This is just the start I will just try to push myself and try to make more innings." Kemar Roach hits Jaiswal’s pads with the opener on 133 but the LBW appeal is turned down no review left for Windies this one was hitting the stumps on ball tracking Jaiswal-Kohli bring up their 50 run partnership in 150 balls Virat Kohli surpasses Virender Sehwag to become the 5th highest Test scorer for India with his 25th run. Jaiswal and Kohli remain unbeaten as India finish day two on 312/2 Stumps Day 2: IND- 312/2 (113 Overs) (Jaiswal 143 Kohli 36) lead West Indies by 162 runs. Rahkeem Cornwall faced some issues with his ankle yesterday and walked off the field after bowling only four overs. It remains to be seen whether he takes the field today. He will play a crucial role for the hosts as he is one of the spinners along with Jomel Warrican who will certainly get some assistance from the surface as the game progresses. India are in a commanding position at the start of day two of this opening Test match of the two-match series. West Indies won the toss and that was the only thing that went their way on the first day. Their batters got starts but literally threw away their wickets and got bundled out on 150 in just 64.3 overs. Alick Athanaze looked composed at the crease but missed out on his maiden Test fifty by three runs on his debut. Indian bowlers were brilliant and kept the hosts under pressure. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled beautifully and picked up a fifer. Ravindra Jadeja also grabbed three wickets. India then had a solid response thanks to Rohit Sharma and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal. They put 80 between them for the first wicket with both Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal remaining unbeaten on 30 and 40 respectively at the end of the first day. West Indies have failed to create chances on the opening day and will have to come out with better plans today. The Indian side will be hoping to bat long and rule the hosts out of this Test by piling up runs in their first innings. A long day awaits the hosts if they fail to pick wickets in the morning session. Let’s see how things unfold for both sides on the second day of this Test. That's the end of the opening day of the 1st Test between West Indies and India. A brilliant day of Test cricket for India as they bundle out the hosts for 150 despite losing the toss and go back in the hut without a dent adding 80 runs for the first wicket. Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin combined to take eight wickets including the final two in the evening session to bundle out the hosts for 150 with the debutant Alick Athanaze top scoring with 47. Ashwin broke a few records to register his 33rd Test 5 wicket haul also passing the 700 wickets mark in international cricket. After bundling out the Windies for 150 India's latest opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal (40*) and Rohit Sharma (30*) batted well to add 80 runs. There were a couple of close appeals and a review as well taken against Rohit Sharma but the umpire's call which was initially not out saved the India skipper early in his innings. The game was also interrupted for 5 minutes due to rain but it didn't impact much to the India openers. Jaiswal took his time to get off the mark but did so in style playing an upper cut on his 16th delivery and did not look back hitting six fours enroute his unbeaten knock. Quick bowlers Jason Holder and Kemar Roach alongside Jomel Warrican kept things tight for India but the openers have brought the trail down to just 70 runs. Pitch Report: The track at Windsor Park is more favorable to bowlers than it is to batters. Spinners are going to play an important role in the match with the pitch offering some turn and bounce for them. Batters who can counter spin well certainly have better chances to do well here. Teams winning the toss would choose to bat first with the average first innings score being 249. Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content. The first Test of the series will be played at Windsor Park Roseau Dominica. An interesting factor about Dominica is that the particular venue is hosting an international red-ball game after six long years. Team Preview (India): Led by Rohit Sharma the Men in Blue have been the dominant side in both WTC cycles played so far. But despite being a team to beat India haven't fired when they needed losing the finals to New Zealand (2019-21) and Australia (2021-23). And in pursuit of an ICC title the Men in Blue are regrouping with a mixture of young and experienced squad. It is confirmed by captain Rohit Sharma that Yashasvi Jaiswal will make his Test debut and will open the batting alongside him. Shubman Gill will bat down at number three the place opened after management dropped veteran Cheteshwar Pujara for the tour. Virat Kohli Ajinkya Rahane Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin will complete the middle and lower order. It will be interesting to see who the team management will opt for the glove work. So the fight will be between Srikar Bharat and Mumbai Indians' Ishan Kishan for that most-important spot in the XI. On the pace bowling front it will be led by the fiery Mohammed Siraj. Giving him the company it is expected to be the duo of Jaydev Unadkat and Shardul Thakur. But don't be surprised if Mukesh Kumar gets an opportunity to make an India debut. India will hope for a winning start but it won't be easy in the Caribbean Islands. India featured only once in Dominica and it was back in 2011 when the venue made its debut in Test match cricket. Both these sides played out a draw when they met back in 2011. Team Preview (West Indies): West Indies are under their new head coach Daren Sammy who is all set to make his Test coaching debut. The two-time ICC T20 World Cup-winning captain is coming off a horrible experience in the ICC World Cup 2023 Qualifiers as the Men in Maroon failed to make it to the main event later in the year in India. Focusing on the purest format of the game the records aren't pleasing. The Kraigg Brathwaite-led side has been pretty poor in the previous two championship cycles. West Indies would want to start the third WTC cycle well but they are facing the two-time runners-up of WTC India which is not going to be an easy task. West Indies team management has named a 13-man squad for the first Test. A few new faces have been added to the team. As usual Brathwaite is leading the side. The impressive Tagenarine Chanderpaul will accompany his skipper up at the top with the bat. Alick Athanaze had a wonderful domestic season and has been in the pick of the things in the West Indies-A set-up as well as toured South Africa in the previous WTC cycle. Kirk McKenzie has got his maiden call-up to the camp. The rest of the side is pretty similar comprising experienced Jason Holder Jermaine Blackwood Alzarri Joseph Shannon Gabriel Kemar Roach Raymon Reifer and Joshua Da Silva as expected will don the gloves. Rahkeem Cornwall an all-arounder who last played in a Test in November 2021 as well as left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican who was a member of the team that toured Zimbabwe but was absent from the most recent tour of South Africa in February have been called back. Gudakesh Motie was unavailable for the selection as he is undergoing rehabilitation from injury. Kyle Mayers is rested for the first Test after complaining about some niggles in the recently concluded ICC World Cup Qualifiers.
