China survives Clarkson, Team Philippines with 82-80 squeaker

Powerhouse China turned back a pesky Philippine side, 82-80, in Group D play of the 2018 Asian Games men’s basketball tournament Tuesday night at the Gelora Bung Karno Basketball Hall, in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Chinese, who sat squarely on the driver seat for the first three quarters, leaned on Zhou Qi for a cushion against the hastily-assembled Filipino squad. But the Philippines, bolstered with National Basketball Association cager Jordan Clarkson, patiently chafed on the lead. The Filipino-American led a blistering outing in the second frame that saw the Nationals hold down perennial Asian Games hoops champions to just 16 points. With barely a week in training with his fellow Filipinos, Clarkson helped the squad tie the game at 55 in the third quarter. Stanley Pringle’s brilliant and equally blurry slashing play buoyed the team in the final frame. PBA rookie Christian Standhardinger added in the effort as the Filipinos took over the driver seat at the 3:09 mark via the Fil-German big man's free throw. Pringle, the top scorer in the win over Kazakhstan last Thursday, hiked the lead just as their assignments kept them within striking range, digging the team out of a what was once a 12-point rut. Zhou and Zhao Rui remained unfazed under pressure as they went on to help China knot the game anew — this time, at 80 and with just 46 ticks left on the clock. Zhao’s productive trip from the charity stripe gave China a two-point lead to enjoy as the game wound down. He accounted for four points in the crucial turnaround along with a momentum-swinging steal. Paul Lee, who made a couple of booming triples to help the momentum swing to the Filipinos’ favor had another clean look within the final six seconds of the game, but his shot was just too strong. The Filipinos, despite the loss, are assured of a berth in the next round of hostilities barring any major upset when China takes on Kazakhstan on Thursday. The Scores China - Zhou 25, Wang 13, Abudurexiti 12, Zhao 11, Ding 7, Sun 6, Liu 5, Fang 2, Dong 1 Philippines - Clarkson 28, Standhardinger 18, Pringle 14, Lee 10, Erram 6, Almazan 2, Belga 2, Norwood 0, Ahanmisi 0, Yap 0, Taulava 0 Quarter scores: 20-12, 36-31, 59-57, 82-80

Brownlee, Parks take charge as Alab Pilipinas holds off Mono Vampire to close in on ABL title

Bobby Ray Parks scored 30 points, while Justin Brownlee added 27 after sustaining an injury in Game Two as San Miguel Alab Pilipinas moved one win away from clinching the Asean Basketball League (ABL) crown with a hard-earned 99-93 win over Mono Vampire Basketball Club in front of a raucous crowd at the Stadium 29 here. Parks and Brownlee spearheaded their team’s attack in staving off repeated rallies by Mono Vampire to lift Alab Pilipinas to a 2-1 series lead on the road on Saturday. With Parks and Brownlee leading the way in Saturday’s all-important finals match, Alab can seal the title on the road in Game Four on Monday at the Stadium 29. Parks hit a triple that gave Alab a 93-86 lead, before hitting another jumper, his eighth straight point, that cooled off a Mono run and took the fight out of home squad as the Philippine team remained ahead, 95-90. Lawrence Domingo clinched the win with a reverse lay-up with 28 seconds left in the game. “I’ve said a lot this season but I’m just really proud of these guys. They’ve been a resilient group the entire season. Tonight was just another opportunity to show that,” said San Miguel Alab Pilipinas coach Jimmy Alapag. Coming off cramps in Game Two, Brownlee had a double-double as he also grabbed 12 rebounds in the contest. Renaldo Balkman added 24 points and 16 rebounds for Alab, including a dunk that hiked their lead to nine before Parks hit a basket for the biggest lead of the game at 11 points, 85-74. Michael Singletary had 29 points, while Samuel Deguara had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Mono, which will try to stave off elimination with a win in Game Four. Paul Zamar had 16 points, while Jason Brickman added 11 points and 12 assists in the contest. Action was heated from the start with Zamar and Paolo Javelona exchanging words in the first quarter. Balkman was also elbowed by Chanachon Klahan, who was slapped with an unsportsmanlike foul on the play. Mono led at the half, 50-48, and nursed a five-point lead, 65-60, after a Zamar basket, the biggest of the game for the Thailand-based squad. The scores: San Miguel Alab Pilipinas 99 - Parks 30, Brownlee 27, Balkman 24, Raymundo 5, Urbiztondo 5, Domingo 4, Javelona 2, Hontiveros 2, Alabanza 0. Mono Vampire Basketball Club 93 - Singletary 29, Deguara 19, Zamar 16, Brickman 11, Chantachon 10, Apiromvilaichai 8, Sunthonsiri 0, Phuangla 0, Klahan 0. Quarterscores: 22-20; 48-50; 75-67; 99-93.

Kyoto, Nara & Osaka
Kyoto, Nara & Osaka

My journey in Japan continues. My next destination is Kyoto. Here I will find a small area called Gion where girls love to be dressed like geishas. The beautiful bamboo forrest in Arashiyama was a Wonderfull visit. I hiked all the way to the top at the Fushimi Inari shrine. It sure was a busy site. A good opportunity to go to Nara and to see the biggest bronze statue of Buddha in the world. That was truly amazing to see. As I moved to Osaka where I spend less than 24 hours I made most out of it. Visiting the Osaka castle, going to Umeda sky building to have a good view of the visit was a good plan. And just wondering trough the dozens of tourist near “the running man” a very nice city indeed. This concludes my trip to Japan.
