Ali Walsh will fight in the historic venue that hosted one of his grandfather’s most memorable bouts. In March 1973, Ali and Ken Norton battled for 12 rounds at what was then known as San Diego Sports Arena. Ali suffered a broken jaw and lost a split decision in a major upset. The Canadiens did a good job of killing a holding penalty to David Savard midway through the first period. They held the Capitals to one shot on goal and created a scoring chance when Poehling had a short-handed breakaway. But Savard was back on the ice for only a dozen seconds when Nic Dowd deflected Orlov’s shot from the blue line for his 10th goal of the season. The Canadiens thought they had a power-play goal a few minutes later when Rem Pitlick was in front to field the rebound of Corey Schueneman’s shot from the blue line. The apparent goal was waved off when officials ruled Pitlick kicked the loose puck into the net and that ruling was confirmed by the situation room in Toronto after a video review.
