Hoy la carrera reunía a 128 corredores de 57 naciones diferentes, Siendo Países bajos, Bélgica, España, Italia y Francia las selecciones con mayor número de participantes contando cada una de ellas con cinco integrantes. Las máximas estrellas del ciclismo mundial se dieron cita en la línea de partida para buscar el título olímpico que estaba en poder del belga Greg Van Avermaet. Y por parte de Latinoamérica se contaba con la participación de Eduardo Sepulveda de Argentina, Royner Navarro de Perú, Los colombianos Sergio Higuita, Rigoberto Urán, Nairo Quintana y Esteban Chaves. El costarricense Andrey Amador, Eder Frayre de México, Richard Carapaz y Jhonatan Narváez por Ecuador, el panameño Christopher Jurado, Manuel Rodas de Guatemala y el Venezolano Orluis Aular. El recorrido olímpico se ha diseñado en un trazado de 234 kilómetros el cual incluía 4860 metros de desnivel positivo distribuidos en 5 puertos. Los dos primeros un par de pequeñas cimas luego del kilómetro 80. Tras el descenso y luego de transitar por un semiplano vendría la subida al imponente monte fuji con sus 14 kilómetros al 6 %. Una vez coronado tomarían el descenso hacia el autódromo en donde debían completar dos pasos previos por línea de meta, y finalmente la dura ascensión al mikuni pass con sus casi 7 kilómetros a 10%, antes de un pequeño muro en el paso kagosaka y la incursión final pasando de nuevo por el fuji speedway. NO toman la partida el alemán Simon GESCHKE y Michal SCHLEGEL de republica checa por dar positivo a las pruebas PCR previo al inicio de la carrera. Una situación recurrente en las filas de la delegación checa que ha presentado 4 casos entre su grupo de deportistas. Se da la salida neutralizada por las calles de la capital japonesa, y de inmediato comienzan los movimientos por figurar en la carrera. Una escapada de 8 corredores involucra a Juraj Sagan de Eslovaquia, Nic Dlamini de Sudáfrica y el venezolano Orluis Aular entre otros. Fuga que en el kilómetro 20 llegó a alcanzar hasta 10 minutos de diferencia con el pelotón. Es el mismo campeón Olímpico Greg Van Avermaet el que se pone al frente del grupo y marca el ritmo para no dejar que se incremente la renta. Al paso por el primer desafío montañoso son los eslovenos quienes toman el relevo y tiran del paquete con Jan Traknik a la cabeza. Hay caída entre los hombres que vienen en el grupo. Los británicos Geraint Thomas y Tao Geoghegan Hart se van al suelo, y con ellos Giulio Ciccone y Gregor Muhlberger. Los cuatro ciclistas tienen que hacer un esfuerzo extra para llegar de nuevo al pelotón, y mas aun teniendo en cuenta que están ascendiendo al dushi road. Al paso por la cima la fuga ha ido perdiendo unidades y la diferencia que llegó a ser de hasta 20 minutos ha decrecido a 17. De inmediato viene una nueva subida, el Paso Kagosaka es el siguiente obstáculo de montaña para los cinco punteros y los perseguidores. La diferencia ha seguido bajando y ya son 15 los minutos que hay entre los dos grupos. La diferencia llegó a estar cercana a los 50 segundos, pero por el empeño que pusieron los perseguidores con Van Aert trabajando, lograron recortar la brecha a solo 16 segundos y tuvieron a los dos punteros en la mira. Es en ese momento que Richard acude a su fortaleza mental y no se deja intimidar por la inminente cacería. Saca lo mejor de sí y se deshace de McNulty. Ya dentro del autódromo acelera aun mas y aprovecha la indecisión que reina atrás para volver a aumentar la renta. Van Aert pedalea con todo para llegarle pero no recibe la ayuda de nadie, la guerra ha terminado por favorecer a Richard que entra en la última curva con un ahorro suficiente. Pedalea los últimos metros del fuji speedway, levanta los brazos al cielo y sonríe, cruza la línea de meta y se asegura la primera medalla de oro para su país en estos juegos y la primera en la historia del ciclismo latinoamericano. Los perseguidores se miden y definen las medallas restantes al sprint, en donde fue necesario el foto finish para saber quiénes completaban el podio. Wout Van Aert se quedó con la medalla de plata y Tadej Pogacar cerró otra brillante actuación quedándose con la de bronce. Histórico e impresionante la actuación del Ecuatoriano 🇪🇨 Richard Carapaz hoy en los ✅ Juegos Olímpicos de 🇯🇵Tokyo 2020, se llevó la medalla de oro. Una etapa muy fuerte con un recorrido de 234 kilómetros Musashinonomori Park y llegada en Fuji International Speedway, dejó gran espectáculo pero sobretodo la alegría del pueblo ecuatoriano y toda la comunidad latinoamericana.
