Er war dabei noch deutlich schneller erfolgreich als der bisherige französische Rekordschütze Bernard Lacombe: Der hatte bei der WM 1978 38 Sekunden für sein Tor ebenfalls gegen Italien gebraucht. Damals verloren die Franzosen ebenfalls - und auch diesmal erwies sich das frühe Tor nicht als gutes Omen. Frankreich hätte schon früh den Ausgleich kassieren können. Doch mit seinem Kopfball traf Davide Frattesi (6.) nur die Latte. Besser machte es Federico Dimarco (30.), der nach einer Hackenablage von Sandro Tonali mit einem sehenswerten Volleyschuss ausglich.
