Pro Evolution Soccer 4 - Blackburn Rovers vs. Middlesbrough (OPTION FILE SHOWCASE - NO MODS)
This is a CPU vs. CPU match on PS2 Classic Pro Evolution Soccer 4. No real "big" matches around this weekend apart from on Monday but I've already done Chelsea so that one isn't going up. With not much to choose from it fell to two second tier games. Either Blackburn vs. Middlesbrough or Lens vs. Sochaux. And while the latter game actually does feature a lot of recognisable players in the squads... let's be fair, the former is probably going to be even more recognisable, not to mention the fact that both teams have edited crests whereas Sochaux reuses one of the standard crests as a stand-in. So here's a match between two teams which are now in the Championship but back then were in the midst of being established Premier League teams. This is being run on a modified option file on Pro Evolution Soccer 4 with lineups, squads and kits adjusted according to what the squads should be as of the first half of the 2004/05 season. The intent of this video is to show the content of said file. The team lineups have been decided based on appearances. This option file has been gradually edited over 10 years of owning the game as I strive for more and more accuracy, even to this day. The halved kits option made recreating Blackburn's kit quite easy, at least from the front. The back of the kit is the wrong way round but there's not much I can really do there. I spent a lot of time recreating the Blackburn crest to be accurate and had to redo it at one point so that it properly fit in. Finally, getting the sponsor logo to show up properly and indent into the blue half was a challenge in and of itself, but I think the Blackburn kit came out quite well in the end. A few squad changes were made for this with several players added from scratch, they all had to be created. The most notable is Morten Gamst Pedersen, a Blackburn legend who started his career at the club in this season and would go on to become a mainstay at the club for many years to come. He is not in PES4 by default but luckily there is an easy slot for editing him as Neil Danns is not part of the Blackburn squad having just moved to Colchester. Easy edit to get in the Norweigan in the game. Actual transfers between existing players sees Dwight Yorke get moved to Birmingham and Youri Djorkaeff moved from Bolton to Blackburn. Wait, those two ever played for those clubs? Neither are exactly well known even before this point for playing for those teams in particular with Dwight Yorke being ex-Man United and Djorkaeff playing for Inter and with some notoriety at Bolton. You'd be right to wonder why... because both only lasted half a season with the club! Still, the squads are based on the FIRST half of the 2004/05 season rather than the second so they are very much part of these squads. Other players were added to Blackburn like Jemal Johnson and Jay Bothroyd to augment the squad as a whole. Not Matt Derbyshire though, since it seems like he is at Plymouth during this time. Middlesbrough were being managed by Steve McClaren at this time. Rather surprisingly given it's Steve McClaren, they actually did well. Middlesbrough's success was a key reason why Steve ended up getting the England job... so it's all their fault we failed to qualify for 2008! On a more serious note, the Boro team is actually pretty solid, they were one of the first mid table Premier League teams to go after the big name foreigners back in the mid 90s and maintained overseas transfer links for many years allowing them to acquire some top players. This season they signed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka which significantly improved their striking options. They had just beaten Bolton to win the League Cup the previous season and would beat out Bolton for 6th in the Premier League in the season this game is based on. Yes, Middlesbrough were a top 6 side! I have transferred Juninho to Celtic and Massimo Maccarone to Parma along with editing Sam Russell into Ross Turnbull. Middlesbrough's main team is actually quite small and during the season they were forced to bring the youth team in to supplement them so I edited in many youth players like Tony McMahon, Danny Graham, James Morrison, Matthew Bates, Andrew Taylor, David Wheather and *shudder* Adam Johnson. Allan Johnston and Mark Wilson both got the chop in the process.
