Arne Slot is a serious problem at Liverpool, and yes—he should be sacked. But treating Slot like the only issue is missing the bigger picture. Liverpool’s problems run far deeper than one manager. From Fenway Sports Group and the sell-to-buy model, to lowered standards within the fanbase, emotional decision-making, squad neglect, and a mentality shaped by the 30-year title drought—this is about the culture of the club itself. Why do Liverpool keep acting like underdogs when they’re the biggest club in England? Why do some fans think one bad season destroys our pull, while clubs like Manchester United can finish 15th and still bounce back? Why do we celebrate success like survivors instead of demanding dominance like Real Madrid or Manchester City? This video breaks down why Liverpool have outgrown FSG, why sentimentality can hold the club back, and why sacking Slot is only the beginning—not the solution. Liverpool say they’re a big club. It’s time to start acting like one. The Carolina Hurricanes are the first team to advance to the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, dispatching the Philadelphia Flyers in four games and becoming just the fifth team in NHL history to start a postseason with eight straight wins. Today, the guys discuss if the Canes have become the favorite to win the Stanley Cup, Mitch Marner leading the league in playoff scoring, and if Gavin McKenna’s similarities to Marner should be viewed positively or negatively in Toronto for the Maple Leafs. Plus, thoughts on the Montreal Canadiens as legitimate contenders, now up 2-1 over the Buffalo Sabres, and the Anaheim Ducks tying their series with the Vegas Golden Knights after a 4-3 win last night. #nhl #hockey #playoffs 0:00 Intro 2:10 Are the Carolina Hurricanes the new Stanley Cup favorite? 5:30 Can the Freddy Andersen-Brandon Bussi tandem handle a Cup run? 10:11 Montreal Canadiens’ first power play unit is scary 12:00 Buffalo Sabres are playing sloppy hockey right now 15:16 The Habs have arrived as a true Stanley Cup contender 17:30 Anaheim Ducks even series, Mark Stone out for the Vegas Golden Knights 20:15 Joel Quenneville vs. John Tortorella 22:00 Mitch Marner leads the playoffs in scoring 25:11 Minnesota Wild bounce back against the Colorado Avalanche in Game 3 28:13 Who’s been the most impressive player in the series so far? 30:10 Do the Avs have a Brock Nelson problem? 35:03 Mitch Marner-Gavin McKenna comparisons 39:25 Did we get the right Hart Trophy finalists? 45:39 Norris Trophy finalists highlight a golden age of NHL defensemen For more Athletic Hockey Show content: - Join The Athletic Hockey Show Discord Server: https://discord.gg/UDmeAnvFB5 - Follow The Athletic Hockey Show wherever you listen to podcasts: https://podfollow.com/the-athletic-hockey-show-a-show-about-the-nhl Follow our hosts on Bluesky: Max Bultman: https://bsky.app/profile/mbultman.bsky.social Mark Lazerus: https://bsky.app/profile/marklazerus.bsky.social Jesse Granger: https://bsky.app/profile/jessegranger.bsky.social Sean Gentille: https://bsky.app/profile/seangentille.bsky.social Sean McIndoe: https://bsky.app/profile/downgoesbrown.bsky.social Hailey Salvian: https://bsky.app/profile/haileysalvian.bsky.social Scott Wheeler: https://bsky.app/profile/scottcwheeler.bsky.social Chris Peters: https://bsky.app/profile/chrismpeters.bsky.social Follow our hosts on X: Max Bultman: https://x.com/m_bultman Mark Lazerus: https://x.com/MarkLazerus Jesse Granger: https://x.com/JesseGranger_ Sean Gentille: https://x.com/seangentille Sean McIndoe: https://x.com/DownGoesBrown Frank Corrado: https://x.com/frankcorrado22 Hailey Salvian: https://x.com/hailey_salvian Corey Pronman: https://x.com/coreypronman Chris Peters: https://x.com/chrismpeters Scott Wheeler: https://x.com/scottcwheeler - Subscribe to The Athletic: https://theathletic.com/hockeyshow -Photo credit: Grant Halverson/Getty Images
The New York Knicks sweep over the Philadelphia 76ers shows just how far away the Celtics really are.
Mitch Marner was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Vegas Golden Knights for Nicolas Roy and has thrived with Vegas. In the current playoffs, he set a career-high 15 postseason points as the Knights push in the second round after a 2-2 series tie with the Ducks, including a hat-trick in Game 3. Social media reactions debated Leafs’ past performance, with critics blaming the organization for playoff shortcomings and highlighting Marner’s success against teams outside the playoffs. Knights coach John Tortorella defended Marner’s mental toughness, saying criticism doesn’t affect him. Marner’s Leafs playoff résumé stands at 70 games with 13 goals, 50 assists, 63 points; this postseason with Vegas, he has 10 games, 6 goals, 10 assists, 16 points so far. Here we go again! Everyone at this point last year made it this far. The cream has risen to the top, the contenders have eased passed the pretenders. And what do we have left in the Central? Komets versus Walleye...again... The Komets got to this point by making quick work of the Indy "Fishers" Fuel in round 1. Winning the series in 5 games with 2 shutouts to boot, one by each goaltender. The K's will be riding with Samuel Jonsson as their goalie of choice for the foreseeable future. He has been standing on his head this series with only 2 goals allowed in 2 games and a .961 save %. In the playoffs you need your goals to come from everyone, The Komets have been doing that. The snakebitten Leo, Indiana native Matthew Miller finally got his first home goal as a Komet in game 5 of the first round. Brady Stonehouse who had his fair share of tough luck has 3 goals and is a plus 3 thus far. Stoney is the type of sandpaper player that is built for the playoffs, and if he can keep up that scoring clip, then everyone should take note. Not to mention that the top guys are scoring as well, Austin Magera leads the playoffs with 7 assists to go with 3 goals. 2 Points per game is an insane clip regardless who the opponent is. Every Komet on the active playoff roster has recorded at least 1 game, a true sign of the team's depth. Maybe this year will be different, the Komets have the talent to make that elusive deep run that hasn't happened since they won it all back in 2021. They have not lost at home so far in the playoffs going a perfect 3-0 at home up to this point. The Toledo Walleye have had a slightly different road up to this point. They won their series in 6 games to the Bloomington Bison. To the surprise of very few, Brandon Hawkins leads the team in points with 8. One thing they have been doing well was tearing up Bloomington's defense. Scoring 24 goals in 6 games well distributed up and down the line-up. Take it with a grain of salt, because Bloomington was playing catch up mode most of the series, Carter Gylander has a sub .900 save percentage, although not by much. What is alarming is what was the 6th best PK in the league comes in the playoffs with a college failing grade at 64.3% (however, that would have passed my weighted Differential Equations class I had the displeasure to take in college.) The Komets special teams have been firing up at the right time, Toledo will need to find that regular season groove to keep up and to prove that they are not cooling off at the worst time possible. This series will be chaos, as it always is. With Toledo getting the best of Fort Wayne the last couple of times last year and back in 2019. That series last year was painful for Komets fans. A golden opportunity was squandered as the underdog team. Now The K's are the top seed with home ice advantage, now is the time to dethrone the Fish once and for all. For Toledo Walleye, the ever elusive Kelly Cup has been teasingly close. They would love to win this series to continue narratives against a division foe and to bring home Toledo's first hockey championship in 32 years.
An interesting tactical analysis of the Fenerbahce Beko - Zalgiris Kaunas series (First round of the 2026 Euroleague Playoffs). The Turkish side won 3-1, but the Lithuanian team fought until the end: even though Wade Baldwin and his teammates defeated the opponents, Sylvain Francisco and his teammates fought hard. This has also been a nice coaching battle between Sarunas Jasikevicius and Tomas Masiulis, and this is the tactical analysis / breakdown of what happened.
