North Star vs Easts - 1987 Brisbane Premier League Match Highlights
North Star vs Easts - 1987 Brisbane Premier League Match Highlights

Highlights from a second round XXXX Premier League match in 1987 as captured by Ch 7. Another in a series of huge crowds turned out at O'Callaghan Park to watch a thrilling encounter between two of the top four teams in the local Premier League competition in 1987 in Eastern Suburbs coached by John Sime and the Ian Fagan inspired North Star. North Star were the reigning Premiers, losing Ampol Cup Finalists and losing Grand Finalists in 1986. In 1987 they had already claimed the first piece of silverware available -- the President's Cup - by beating Brisbane Lions 4-3 on penalties. That match was North Star's second win over the star-studded Brisbane Lions outfit in as many games in 1987. Easts was a team rebuilding and keen to improve on their fourth place finish in 1986. The local Premier League competition in 1987 was strengthened by the inclusion of Brisbane City and Brisbane Lions, both recently relegated from the National Soccer League competition after many years as foundation members. The reward for the team that would take out the Premiership in 1987 was a play-off date for National Soccer League entry in 1988 against interstate rivals. In this match, Easts jump to an early 2-0 lead, only to have the resilient North Star outfit pull level late in the match through the excellent individual efforts of Alan Marley and Mike Mulvey. Mulvey pops up again to grab a late winner with a sublime strike at the end of piece of typical North Star team play, circa 1987. These two teams would play an almost identical match in the Knock-out Semi Final a few weeks later. Going into the final rounds of the 1987 competition any one of three teams - Brisbane Lions, Brisbane City and North Star -- could have claimed the Premiership, such was the top quality football on show. North Star was unlucky to have a spate of late season injuries. Brisbane Lions ultimately were crowned 1987 Premiers and won back the right to play National Soccer League in 1988 in the subsequent play-off series.
