Galatasaray, Besiktas, Fenerbahce & the Turkish Football Crisis So the Turkish Lira, the currency in Turkey is currently sitting at around 13.61 Lira to 1 USD, however when their current President, Recep Erdogan came into power back in 2014, the exchange rate was closer to 2 Liras to 1 USD. Thats a 680% change in depreciation. Now you don’t need to be an economist to know that that is seriously seriously bad But things really got bad during and after covid, since the start of 2020, the Lira has depreciated around 230% against the USD. Why is this the case, the biggest reason why the Turkish Lira is one of the worst performing currencies in the world in recent times is down to the continuation of lowering interest rates by the Turkish Central Bank. Usually Central Bank’s lower interest rates during times of economic slowdown, when inflation rates are low, this makes borrowing money less expensive encouraging people to spend and boost the economy. However, in the case of Turkey, and basically every other country during covid, inflation rates are far from low, as central banks try to boost their respective economies. Where most countries are now increasing interest rates to tackle rising inflation rates, because when there’s more money in supply that depreciates the value of that currency, the Turkey have continued to lower interest rates. President Erdogan has a very creative but unanimously unpopular idea. He believes that rather than increasing the interest rate to slow down spending in the economy and therefore slow down rising inflation rates, he believes that lowering the interest rate will encourage investment in the Turkish economy, which will improve the standard of living in Turkey, and therefore fight against inflation… Yeah, so although Turkey’s economy is experiencing growth thanks to lower exporting costs especially, which would suggest living standards are increasing, because inflation rates are soaring, this is not the case. So not only is inflation rates increasing, the value of the Lira is plummeting, making imports far more expensive. And this is where it becomes relevant to the Turkish Superlig, Turkish Clubs use Turkish Lira to pay for loans, player transfer fees and player wages. It is becoming increasingly more expensive to purchase players outside of Turkey and their wages are becoming more expensive too, which is discouraging Turkish clubs to bring in players from other leagues. And I’m not sure what currency players in turkey are paid, but if it is in Lira then the contracts that current players in the Superlig are on are depreciating in value rapidly too, encouraging them to either renegotiate contracts with their clubs or look to leave Turkey for a wage with a stable currency. Unfortunately things don’t get better for the big 3 and Trabzonspor in fact. Turkish football has constantly been trying keep up with and compete with Europe’s Elite, and in order to finance that, these clubs have taken out multiple loans over the years to buy players. In doing so not only did some clubs break FFP rules, but the biggest problem now is that due to the loss of revenues during the height of the pandemic, along with the crippling foreign exchange rates, the big 4 have not only been unable to pay off these debts, but the debts have actually increased drastically. The combined amount that Galatasaray, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor owe in debts is now roughly around 2bn USD. Fuck. Obviously, they can not pay these debts off without seeking new cashflows, and are currently seeking to restructure the debts in a way that isn’t going to bankrupt them. So this makes sense why we aren’t seeing the same caliber of players in the Turkish SuperLig anymore, and why the big 3 are finding it harder to compete domestically, nevermind in Europe.
