Ishockey fick olympisk status 1920 vilket gjorde att den i större delen av Europa snart konkurrerade ut bandyn. Ishockeyn gjorde internationell debut i Sverige genom OS i Antwerpen 1920 dĂ€r ishockey ingick som debuterande gren. I Sverige hade det sedan 1890-talet spelats nĂ„got som kallades "hockey" men som i sjĂ€lva verket var bandy. 1955 passerades just bandyn som svensk publiksport av ishockeyn. Sedan 1970-talet rĂ€knas ishockey som en av Sveriges nationalsporter. Fotboll Ă€r Ă€nnu störst bland nationalsporter. 2008 kom ishockey för herrar pĂ„ fjĂ€rde plats medan ishockey för damer kom pĂ„ tionde plats. SpelfĂ€ltet inom IIHF Ă€r 60 meter lĂ„ngt och 30 meter brett. Rinkarna i NHL Ă€r istĂ€llet nĂ€rmare 61 meter lĂ„nga och 26 meter breda. Hörnen Ă€r avrundade i en radie av 8,5 meter. Runt spelfĂ€ltet gĂ„r en sarg som Ă€r mellan 110 och 125 cm hög. Sargen lĂ€ngs bĂ„da kortsidorna (Ă€ven kallat kortsarg, eller "rundel") Ă€r befĂ€st med plexiglas ovanpĂ„. Ovanför plexiglasrutorna finns skyddsnĂ€t som, liksom glaset, Ă€r till för att minimera risken för Ă„skĂ„darna vid kortsidorna att bli trĂ€ffade av puckar frĂ„n planen. I lĂ€ngden delas spelfĂ€ltet med fem parallella linjer i olika avsnitt. Med tvĂ„ blĂ„ linjer tvĂ€rs över fĂ€ltet delas det i tre avsnitt (zoner). Sedan 2014 Ă€r de tvĂ„ ytterzonerna störst (tidigare var samtliga tre av samma storlek). TvĂ€rs över spelfĂ€ltets mitt finns en röd linje och mitt pĂ„ den Ă€r spelfĂ€ltets centrum, mittpunkten. Runt mittpunkten finns mittcirkeln, som har en radie pĂ„ 4,5 meter. MĂ„len har var sin röd mĂ„llinje som Ă€r belĂ€gen 4 meter frĂ„n spelfĂ€ltets kortsidor. MĂ„llinjen förlĂ€ngs pĂ„ bĂ€gge sidor om mĂ„let ut till sargen i vad som kallas Icinglinjen eller den "förlĂ€ngda mĂ„llinjen". Till skillnad frĂ„n flera andra lagsporter anvĂ€nds spelfĂ€ltet bakom mĂ„len som en del av spelplanen. Arean precis bakom mĂ„let i form av ett likbent parallelltrapets kallas för "restriktionsomrĂ„de". Inom detta omrĂ„de fĂ„r mĂ„lvakten hantera pucken och spela den vidare. Inside, however, the Chicago Bulls were busy nearly handing a gift-wrapped victory to a struggling Indiana Pacers squad. What should have been a blowout turned into a "rough sleigh ride" for the 17,488 in attendance, highlighting the fragile nature of a Bulls team still trying to find its identity after the off-season trade that sent Charles Oakley to New York for Bill Cartwright. The Bulls held a commanding 19-point lead that evaporated as the Pacers' Wayman Tisdale began to exploit a soft interior defense. Indiana clawed back to within a single point with just 93 seconds remaining, exposing the recurring narrative of the 1988-89 season: if Michael Jordan doesn't do everything, the Bulls do very little. Jordan, playing the role of a hardwood Scrooge, finally slammed the door. He drew contact, converted the necessary free throws, and delivered a signature defensive rejection on a Chuck Person attempt to preserve the win.
