FC Schalke 04 - Hertha BSC 1:2 | 12.05.2021 | 3 Big Points!

3 BIG POINTS!

Celtic v Airdrie | Full-time Reaction
Celtic v Airdrie | Full-time Reaction

Full-time reaction from Celtic Park as the Hoops returned to action with a 3-0 win over Airdrie in the Scottish Cup. An underwhelming 1st half was alleviated by a Scott Sinclair strike - after the winger had previously missed a penalty and an open goal! He was on the scoresheet again early in the 2nd half before debutant Timothy Weah wrapped up the 3-0 with a cool finish from Boyata’s pinpoint pass. A run of the mill performance sees us through to the 5th round and one step closer to the goal for the end of the season. An under-par Celtic display, coupled with spirited resistance from Aberdeen, contributed to a tight League Cup final. Aberdeen emerge from this game with credit but Celtic demonstrated that valuable commodity of earning victory when not at peak level. A single-goal victory means Rodgers retains his record of winning every Scottish competition placed in front of him.  The first half was most notable for a sickening incident. Gary Mackay-Steven leapt to connect with a Shay Logan cross, but the Aberdeen winger was instead involved in a clash of heads with Dedryck Boyata. The reaction of other players illustrated what trouble Mackay-Steven was in; after six minutes of treatment he left the field on a stretcher. Boyata was able to play on, albeit with head heavily bandaged. Celtic v Aberdeen: Scottish League Cup final – live! Read more  Aberdeen’s plan to sit deep and frustrate Celtic had largely worked during that opening period. Tom Rogic clipped an Aberdeen post with a 20-yard effort and James Forrest screwed wide but Celtic were pretty punchless. Not that Aberdeen offered much more in a taut first half, save a Dominic Ball effort which flew high over the crossbar.  Perhaps there was no surprise, then, that Celtic’s breakthrough arrived by virtue of going back to basics during lengthy stoppage time. Boyata lofted the ball from halfway towards Ryan Christie, whose run from midfield was not matched by Graeme Shinnie. Christie’s first shot was smartly saved by Joe Lewis but the Celtic player retained his footing sufficiently to scoop the rebound into Aberdeen’s net.  The second half was considerably more open. There was also controversy; that Celtic were awarded a penalty for an alleged Ball handling offence was wrong both because there was no such infringement and said incident occurred outside the penalty area. Lewis partly spared the blushes of Andrew Dallas, the referee, by batting Scott Sinclair’s spot-kick away.  Jozo Simunovic, in his first action after replacing the injured Boyata, shanked an attempted clearance against his own bar. Filip Benkovic and Sinclair came close to doubling Celtic’s lead. Aberdeen lacked nothing whatsoever in character but, not for the first time this season, hardly looked potent. Set-pieces appeared Aberdeen’s best hope of salvation; from one, Scott McKenna flicked a header narrowly wide. Former Celtic striker slams two Hoops players after Salzburg collapse. Scottish Premiership champions Celtic fell apart in the second half of Thursday's Europa League clash, with Dedryck Boyata and Jack Hendry under fire. Not for the first time this season, bad defending has cost Celtic dear. Brendan Rodgers’ side were a goal up and flying in Thursday’s Europa League clash away at Red Bull Salzburg, Odsonne Edouard giving the visitors a second-minute lead. But Celtic left Austria with a 3-1 defeat after a second half performance in which their problems at the back were exposed once again. In the injury-enforced absence of Kristoffer Ajer and Filip Benkovic, Dedryck Boyata and Jack Hendry lined up at centre-back at the Red Bull Arena. But the Belgian and the Scot were taken to the cleaners in the second half as the prolific Munas Dabbur netted twice. Speaking on BT Sport’s live coverage (4 October), former Celtic and Rangers striker Kenny Miller has taken aim at the two Bhoys defenders. “They never defended the balls into the box properly. The positions of the centre-backs were not right from the outset, particularly for the second goal,” Miller said. Celtic fans would struggle to disagree. Boyata might be one of the best defenders in Scottish football, but his limitations have been frequently exposed in Europe and he floundered again last night, making a mockery of the big bids that were made for him this summer. Hendry, meanwhile, continues to toil in Celtic colours, having failed to convince since his £1.5 million move from Dundee in January.

A pre-planned banner was unveiled by those in the safe standing area with the words "Boyata - Not Fit To Wear The Jersey", and the centre back was also booed by his own fans when his name was read out. A section of the Celtic support also applauded the Belgian centre back but a large section made their feelings clear on his inclusion, while there has also been a mixed response when he touc...
